I can't believe that CBs are coming back. I remember having a uniden base station with a massive M400 or also know as the Starduster antenna plus a "little" booster :)

While your waiting on the NEW monitor, try popping the cover off the one that plays up. I bought a NEW IN BOX LCD monitor from ALDI about 7 years ago, and it was doing the same kind of thing, it would work for 10 minutes or so ,then the screen would go into lines like yours is doing, or have a single line at the top or bottom of the screen with lit pixels and the rest of the display would be black. I took the back cover off, and found the earthing tab wasn't contacting the frame around the screen. I bent it into contact, put the cover back on and haven't had an issue again for almost 7 years now. It's still running perfectly. It's worth a try, you might find it fixes the problem, it might not. But what have you got to lose?

I have the Thunderbolt antenna also which I got to work the 10m band. The added bonus is, with some help from the internal tuner to trim the SWR, will also work on 12m and 6m.

Another new guy yesterday from Hatfield setting up CB for the first time and got straight onto the 305 group. His been off the air for over 30 years. Amazing the amount of people coming back to SSB CB even after the end of the lockdown. Its epic. Nice video Andy and thanks for the chat on FM the other day.

Nice Andy, a versatile twig for going mobile too. You are right about CB, it’s buzzing right now. I had a guy come in from the Bermuda Islands on the skip Sunday. Saturday night was crazy on the local 19, over twenty stations and people coming out of the woodwork from miles around. Good times 🙂

Yep the Hawkins antenna works really well, use one static mobile all the time. In a bad place for homebase myself in a block of flats , but i certainly had a few stateside last sunday , it was crazy.

Not guaranteed, but you used to find (as I remember as a kid/teen back then) that people using K40's (then a premium antenna amongst mobile stuff, price wise) were often paired to more premium sets, so you'd be more likely to find a was a mid to high end Uniden or Cybernetic chassis 'quality' item, or even a non-FM dual or multi mode or a fake '27/81' multi mode with FM. That's my fog of time association with K40s. Never used one as we used scratch built stuff here rather than often poorly made commercial 'CB' market antennas that were all hype & BS marketing. For the cost of 1/4 wave retail, you could build a 5/8 or a really good many elements CoLin if you were tool handy. Today, with dirt cheap VNA's to test resonance etc, easy as falling off a log to get it right first time.

Well, you may as well buy an Anytone (the most recent 'export' model) and that'll give you all the CEPT & UK, 10m when you can make the move, and it's fully VFO capable. It's actual 27Mhz certification is, like with most exports, dubious but I doubt the CB crowd care much about that. I have one here I use for CB monitoring mostly and 10m (as a licensed ham) when my FT-818 is tied up doing TG. Not even close, on 10m, to the FT receiver wise, but in the right context (as effectively a modded CB), the AT isn't bad. Alternatively, the Dx10 Alinco with CW capability (again basically a CB set, but a bit better built) is a good CB set on 27mhz and ready for more expanded multi mode on 10m. Can't recall if you have unlock the 27mhz Tx capability or not - as it's actually targeted for 10m rather than targeted to 10 as a quick win import restrictions dodge which is what 'export' sets are.

Nice video,been away from the radio for some years i have an M0 call sign and have been away far too long and tech has moved on,i had a yeasu 1000mp,this got sold years ago along with my cobwebb and tri.bander etc but i still have a ic 706mks 2 and was thinking of putting a wire up with a smart tuner ....wonder if you have made any vids with a smart tuner?

Hi, these days you defo need a multi mode radio with FM/AM/SSB and ideally it needs to be able to be export mode enabled so you can access all the channels where the activity is. Lookup the president mckinley, great radio👍🏻

Gotta love 11m Cb & Ssb, I have a good 50m daily radius in Lancashire, with plenty of local(ish) breakers on most of the day, 19 is alive as I type. The Hawkins Thunderbolt ⅝&½w I have looked at both, but ill wait until after Xmas for 1, I already got a Sirio Gm ⅝w waiting to go up, hoping for better Dx.

Thanks mate, I'd have to say the Icom as it covers nearly all bands HF, VHF, UHF, and is super portable with its own built in battery.. it really needs an amp though for HF. The yaesu is amazing for HF/6M/4M.

Andy, I'm curious did you ever try the dipole horizontally? The only antenna I use vertical is my dual band colinear for 2m and 70cm. Ground radials are often required for HF vertical antennas. That end fed antenna looks like a nice choice for 10m/11m but again you could use that horizontally too. Maybe try it and compare your results. Is that end fed any good for other bands or is it designed only for 10m/11m? Are you using any ground system with your end fed antenna?

Hi, never tried the dipole horizontally, pretty much every local station around here is vertically polarised so I presumed I would be down on signal if I went that route? I'm mainly interested in long distance groundwave rather than DX. No ground system on the vertical, I considered an earth rod for the radio but haven't done that yet.

@@andykirby My mum went to work one day and I fitted a 10 foot pole on my chimney with a 19 foot aerial.. it didn't go down well especially when I ran the coax through the loft and drilled a hole in the ceiling of my sisters room to feed it which was next to mine.. II also had a 1000 watt burner which set car alarms off... those were the days 😂 one thing I would say is you meet like minded people on the cb radio good way to meet freinds... although we did have a guy with the name dave the wierdo who used to track us kids down...

Yeah it's centered at 27.555 and covers the whole band, a tuner is useful to match the impedance if you run power.

Motters, I tried a Graphite pole, they don't work and neither will a Carbon one, it needs to be Fibreglass, as Fg is not conductive. I had trouble with eratic SWR on the graphite pole.
