As a kid, I was terrified of snakes. Then I became a grandmother. One day my 6 year old granddaughter picked up a garter snake and was admiring it. That changed things for me. When I thru hiked the AT, I changed my mind toward snakes. I saw garter snakes, rat snakes, copperheads and rattlesnakes. I looked at them like I would look at any other animal. They are out there just living their lives. They are not there to attack you. Just like any other animal, they don't want to be bothered. This mind set made a big difference in my comfort level with snakes. Happy Hiking Kelly!

Yep. I caught snakes as a kid. Moved them around, built cages, bought mice etc. It's just part of nature. As long as you understand the venomous from the nonvenomous ones you can't get killed. At least not automatically)

They should rename the Florida Trail to the Florida Water Trail, for all the water you've had to hike through. Glad you didn't encounter any gators in those shallow waters you were traipsing through on that stint, but they prefer deeper waters, so that's good. Cool Bald Eagle spotting and a pelican on the trail as a bonus. Hard to do a "controlled burn" when it is so windy. Never advisable. As that "controlled" part can turn quickly to "out of control!" Sorry you all had to work your way through all that smoke and ash. You all are crushing it! Stay safe!

This video may be the best summation of the Florida Trail I've ever seen; This won't be so bad, time to get the feet wet, SNAKE, MORE SNEK, gator, big gator, oh wow this is beautiful, Help I think I'm going to die, should I push the rescue button, MOSQUITOS, and yeah that was a great hike today...all in one video (I may have over done it with the rescue button part...but hey, Bradwell Bay is getting closer).

GREAT shots of the bald eagle....what a beautiful bird. Seems to me an odd day to do a burn being so windy...maybe they like that to help move the flames along.

I'm so glad you respect the wildlife even the cottomouths. My team & I spent days in the Saint Mark's area & Apalachicola removing reptiles prior to & during a control burn later to release them back...lightning 🌩 causes lots of "burns" but, I have issues with the "contol" burnings as used & the conditions discerning their decisions. As usual, I LOVE your adventures! God Bless !

Prescribed burns are a very common event this time of year it is very effective it burns off old growth and it invigorates the new growth to grow that is why Florida rarely has massive wildfires prescribed burns is good practice for the health of the forest

Not in 25 mph winds with hiker's in the area. I've been seeing more and more "controlled burns" getting out of control. This is evidence of the forestry service or the contractor endangering these peoples lives. They were even given a permit to camp.

They should of had patrolled the trail before igniting that blaze and made sure hikers were not present , the fact the burn was to cover (knowingly firing a flare to part of “The Florida Trail” and they didn’t take proper steps to protect the hiking community is outrageously negligent. I’m so happy y’all are safe The trail committee should be told about this. An inexperienced hiker could of freaked out and been in some serious trouble. Ok! Now you guys keep stepping ! ✌🏼🤍 carry on !

@@jonnyboom5993It's a public trail and they're nasty SOBs. I got enough sense to dispatch it without getting bit, I've been a bowhunter in these Florida swamps for 35 years and I've killed a few.
