Sucks you had to sacrifice that PS5 but look at it this way: You are proud of your work and will do everything in your power to get your customers what they paid for. You should make a record of everything you do to all boards you repair. That way you'll know exactly what you've done, and you're not guessing, should it come back to repair.
@chrisoliver4303 Жыл бұрын
Definitely, when I used to repair phones I recorded serial numbers, repair, price, parts used etc. if I had one come back I knew what had been done and also helps factor price into sales or repairs.

Ooof, this is a tough one, but you've got a great attitude towards customer service mate! To ensure the console hasn't been dropped in future for warranty claims, you can get small stickers (eg. ShockDot / ShockWatch) that essentially provide a measure of mechanical g-forces. They come in all different g-ratings, and basically, if the item is dropped/knocked beyond the g-rating specified, small indicator vial turns red - giving positive confirmation a certain g-force has been exceeded. They're only a few pounds each, so they could be a cheap insurance policy for consoles you're repairing/selling - just place one near your repair/warranty void stickers. As for what to do... I would give the console back to the customer, but I would stipulate that they need to either have their electrical outlet inspected or recommend some sort of inline power filter/surge protector; and that any future power supply related failures aren't covered under warranty. The filter won't protect against everything (eg. extreme low/high voltage), but may be enough to prevent future failures that might be noise related. I'd also confirm they're not running it off a dodgy power strip/board.

I would say its possible something overheated, but you can check that with the thermal camera once you've got something working so it would be obvious if something was going bust, and also thinking about it a bit more 1 hour is a long time for somethin to be running if there was a heat issue. Other thing is maybe a component was on its way out because the technician before you was doing all manner of magic on the board, such as nuking stuff with the heat gun.

Hi Phil merry Xmas to you and your family. I am almost to afraid to buy a PS5 after seeing to many repair videos... my son has one and hopefully it keeps working. I myself have a og Plastation, a PSone, a fat 60 PS3 (yes the backwarts compatible one) a PS3 slim and a PS4 pro (sold my day one PS4 and PSP and Vita 3g) so one can say I was a Sony fan. After having borrowed my son's PS5 for Horizon forbidden west I must say it is the first PS I genuinely don't like and feel Sony went for the cheap cost sparing build. I bought a series S and a little while later an series X and couldn't be happier. Both are quiet, start fast and have quick resume and smart delivery (and gamepass) The last couple of years I was more a PC gamer (having build a racing cockpit myself) but came back to console earlier this year getting tired of always having to update stuff. Anyway I am rambling on boxing day being alone with my dogs (I honestly don't like Xmas so I am ok) I came to say that you don't have to apologise that your 5 yr old son plays GTA. I have experience with autistic kids and these are tools that give them peace and happiness so nothing wrong with that. My 2 kids (19 light autistic and 22) have played games their whole life and is something we get a lot of joy and happiness from especially when playing together. Suc6 with redecorating the workshop and thanks for the great and educational videos.

Interesting. I have had all the PlayStations (and the first 2 Xboxes) and the PS4 didn’t click with me for some reason, didn’t really like it, however I really love the PS5, fast load times, I like the interface, and while many people don’t seem to like it, I love the shape. I hardly touched my PS4 after the initial few weeks, and spent 100% of my time gaming on my PC. Since getting the PS5 (had it since Feb 21), I’ve not used my PC for gaming once. Mind you, us all being different is what makes life interesting. I have the digital version and it’s very quiet. As for the reliability, any channel like this one will make it seem a product has tons of problems, meanwhile tons of people will be happily using them. If there was a huge problem (like the red ring of death on the 360), I would have expected complaint after complaint everywhere, with the press reporting it too. A quick youtube search and there’s loads of Xbox X repair vids too.

You're a good bloke Phil. Very few would have done what you did. On the question of liquid metal, i see some folks put it on their gaming laptops with no barrier. Usually causing failures however i watched Sorin do it and he used so little of it on both surfaces. You've said yourself Sony use too much. The conformal coating is a great idea, but i would also completely replace the metal with good quality alternative and use as little as possible.

I hope all have had a great Christmas to start.I literally have about 20 friends who all got a ps5’s from day 1 and none have had any issues with the console or controller stick drift. Is this down to pure luck or the fact that they all look after there consoles with regular cleaning.

Most likely the cold christmas fever got to the ps5. That a expensive lesson you should have went through the whole ps5 board and test everything but shot yourself in the foot by skipping a few areas. Here a tip for you phil take a picture of the board and mark up all the areas with voltages reading and flow direction that way you look at it on the wall than swapping boards every time you will lose track of everything

I don't know why Sony puts so much liquid metal on their chips... They use so much it's practically a liquid metal bath under the heatsink. You should only need a very thin coat, I used liquid metal under my IHS, between the IHS and cooler, and on my gpu and I never had a problem with it spilling out or anything even close. Certainly didn't need a sponge to keep it in place.
