@@SimonWoodburyForget Eh yes and no. Its a bad precedent to set as someone could get used to automatic quickly and not want to move onto manual or change over and then only be able to pass in an automatic / drive an automatic in the future. Its quite common in the US for automatic to be the standard and "stick shift" as they call it to be the anonomaly but in the UK theres far more manual cars than automatic so I think learning manual from the start is best. Then people can make an informed decision about if they want to keep on with manual or if its too much for them and learn automatic.

@@Phil27262 Phil 2726, Although I agree to an extent , but after 5 hours of tutoring he should at least have learned to control the car. That said I personally believe first time learners have it a lot harder these days, I drove (on private land from aged 8, so was ready for and took and passed my test on my 17th birthday. As driving now has changed so much I feel it would be a good idea and beneficial for first timers to be taught for at least four hours on a proper car drome, That is a course laid out with every sign and crossing junction mini roundabouts traffic lights etc etc as the roads. (pay by the hour) There was one in Hornchurch back in the day run by the local council I believe and it was not expensive, and it was very popular. I taught my wife and my sons there and then booked them 3 lessons each with a genuine and proper approved instructor, (not the Red brigade so called tutors), so they could get sharpened up and learn all the really necessary things to pass a test, as of course no one can teach experience, and they all passed first time. The thing is it was gentler and all the learners there were in the same boat, the idea being they get to learn the vehicle and how it handles before going on the road at the mercy of attitudinal so called drivers who have no patience and think they are the only ones on the road that can drive! As for the fly by night so called driving instructors with the rented cars and working for a tin pot firm set up to purely to rent cars and so called "tutors" their own driving leaves a lot to be desired!
@Phil272622 жыл бұрын
@@MrChrissy1r you are absolutely correct. If someone has had 5 hours of driving with a serious driving instructor they really should know how to control the car. I watched some of the videos of his brother though and it seems like in these 5 hours he drove an automatic car and not a manual and also his brother didn’t teach him anything as he was his „driving instructor“. I also believe that learners really have it hard in the UK as I got my license 4 years ago here in Italy and even though it isn’t easy to pass it is way more reasonable compared to the UK test. There are some things in this test that here in Italy are no problem. For example if you stall the car at a red light when starting in Italy it isn’t a problem at all compared to the UK where it is a serious fault. Of course these car dromes are also a very good thing to start on for someone that has never driven a car and is also not interested in cars as it takes all the pressure from the learner which he would get from finding himself on a busy road.

My sister always struggled with driving really really badly, where 3 instructors said she would never pass and driving wasnt for everyone. She had never even got to do hills, emergency stop, roundabouts, busy junctions etc, just side streets and they said there was no way. She couldn't even change gear without steering across the lanes. She struggled with gears and would always stall and not be able to get the gears in at all. I said forget this, these instructors were crap, so i went with her to buy a little car and insured her provisional on it and i took her somewhere in it and then gave her lessons. I immediately started with hill starts, so she understood the importance of a bite and clutch control before anything else. We did the biggest hills i could find. Once she did that for a lesson, i took her back and we did a little quiet culdesac where i taught her how to change gears on long flat straight roads. I taught her how to steer round cars there and how to stop and start and pull up and pull off and turn corners. Once i knew she could do that in the first couple lessons, i took her to dual carriageways to get her higher gears in, going up and down the same bit of dual carriageway. After that, i took her back there i taught her how to do the roundabouts going back around the same few roundabouts in 1 trip back and forth and back and forth between the same roundabouts, and then i took her back there on the next few lessons but taking different exits to what we had practiced so she got used to moving lanes and going different lanes round roundabouts and how to come off them for different directions. Once we did that, i took her to a different town to practice all of it, roundabouts junctions, hills, side streets, turns, dual carriageways, massive hills, huge crossings etc, and she was good. Every lesson i would make her do a 3 point turn somewhere and pull into a car park somewhere and do bay park, and also doing emergency stops and parallel park, so the only thing she needed practice with when it camr to it, was reverse corners which i wasnt confident to teach tbh. We practicee in day and nightxquiet times and rush hour, little villages and busy cities. We did everything we could on every lesson. She had an instructor give her 1 lesson type thing then to see how id taught her and they onky gave 1 piece of feedback, that some corners she didnt fully stop if she had checked it was clear which i didnt think you needed to, so we went away and practiced more side street turnings and went back to him and he said that time that there was nothing he could teach her as she was fine. She took her test and failed 1st time as she didnt realise the road she was on was a 60 not a 40, so we went away and practiced our same usual lessons but in places where the road speeds kept changing, and she took the test again and passed with no minors. Shes been driving 2 years now and is legitimately a better driver than me and is actually the most properly correct driver i know at all. I genuinely taught her better than 5 instructors taught me. I was an amazing instructor and many people have asked me to do the same for them since

Some of these driving instructors are absolutely horrendous, they purposely knock your confidence down because they don't want you to pass. I had this old English man that really helped me out and got me up to test standards, I had awful experiences with driving schools until I found an independent driving instructor, I think the worse are those that work for driving schools, they seem to hate teaching people and they're money grabbing sharks. Well done you on teaching your sister and getting her up to test standards I had a few lessons with my dad, when I was ready for my test my dad gave me so much positive encouragement - (rip dad). 🙏🏾

@@lavonnealexander6936 she did tbf, she gave me money for my petrol to get to her and back each week, (I only took £20 off her a week and was going to her for about 2-3 hours at least 3 times a week for about 6 months) and then she gave me £200 when she passed. I did tell her I didn't want it fof her, but she made a point that she would have been bankrupt had she had to pay for lessons and would never have gotten that many hours for it either lol.

@@lavonnealexander6936 I actually genuinely loved teaching her. I remember a time she stalled on a slight hill start junction because she was in 3rd gear. She stalled about 5 times in a row trying to move and was going mad telling me to help her and I said no, she could do it herself. She was so flustered not knowing what to do, until she eventually realised she was in 3rd not 1st. After we got past that, at the end of that lesson we pulled up and she asked why I never helped her at that hill. I pointed out to her that we had done 4 hills after that in the same lesson and she had double checked her gear at every one before pulling off, because she didn't want to mess up again, and I said if I had told her to change gear straight away, she would of never gone on to double check her gear when pulling off. I absolutely absolutely genuinely loved giving her lessons and it's probably my biggest life achievement if I'm honest. I am kind of gutted she passed because I miss teaching her😭

This just shows you family or friends can't teach you to drive, you need to take plenty of lessons. My heart jumped a few times watching this. Bless him I didn't have this much courage when I was his age. He'll be alright.

One of of the hardest things I remember when learning is turning the steering wheel. You don't know how much to turn and you get scared to turn the steering all the way if necessary. That's why I can tell Juvenal is having difficulty steering away from parked cars.

I noticed a few time with different drivers that the positions their hands are at are very odd. My driving instructor was so strict on having hands at 10 and 2 so I was just wondering why it never seems to come up how to position your hands on the wheel and how to turn. I remember my first lesson was in a car park learning how to manoeuvre round cars and what to do with the steering wheel. It’s just I noticed at 12:39 when he’s steering he doesn’t move his hands it’s his arms that he moves which makes it very difficult.

I remember spending about five hours just learning how to turn the wheel because I found it hard to fathom that you had to do a 270 turn fulor whatever to turn the wheel to the right. I've not yet passed my test so I could be wrong but it was one the harder things for me to master.
