Aluminum conducts electricity. The wire going to your house is aluminum probably. The problem sounds like its the normal reaction that steel and aluminum have which causes a form of oxidation which will make your grounds not work.

Galvanic Corrosion is what you're referring to. Result is a yellow/green/white gross looking dust build-up around connections of mixed metals. Copper and Aluminum are exceptionally bad about it. My guess is the steel to steel connection for the glow plugs has been replaced with a more modern copper terminal that has either broken off or as you suggest, corroded away.

Umm what? Aluminum conducts electricity better than iron and steel bro. Lol Matt, I was in the Marines for 5 years, was a RADAR, COMM, and NAV electronics techinician certified to SME level. I currently work for Boeing as a Test Technician in missile defense programs. I own a perfect M998 HMMWV with a 6.5L. Mine is a 1988. First contract batch built for the military. 53331 serial number. My co-worker was a HMMWV mechanic for 10 years. The glow plug controller is electronic and goes out more than anything else on a Humvee. Follow the troubleshooting guides in the tech pub manuals and you'll figure it out sooner than later. Your wait light not coming on with a no start condition is very common of a bad glow plug controller box. PS just got my first 50 cal. And I'd go with a Stingray Corvette. Nothing is more American than a Vette besides a AMG HMMWV. ;)

Aluminum has a dis-similar expansion rate vs copper. So, when Alu wire is used on a standard plug/light switch with copper fittings it tends to loosen them over time, causing high resistance. Resistance = high heat. Heat = fires

Aircraft are all grounded through their airframes, which are made of aluminium, aluminum conducts better than steel. I'm an aircraft electrician and avionics tech. However, since the chasis of this humvee is steel and the body is aluminum, you have two dissimilar metals which will cause aggressive corrosion if they're in contact with each other. It's very possible that the chasis and the body are insulated from each other in order to prevent this. If this is the case, then it would make sense that you can't use the aluminium body for grounding, and the electrical system would be using the steel chasis for grounding. Also, grounding between two different metals can build a charge between the two metals and cause a dangerous situation. However based on everything I've heard, you probably have a bad relay in the ignition system. Pull a wiring diagram off the Internet and test some points with a multimeter. Cheers!
@Pondo12216 жыл бұрын
The body panels are anodized, which is non-conductive. Aluminum is very conductive. They make some wires from it. But anodized parts are not conductive unless the anodizing is ground/worn off so contact can be made with the aluminum underneath.
@aviationist6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are required to burnish the bonding area for aluminum materials, you are then supposed to verify the bond with a bonding meter. This is standard practice. Reference the FAA's AC 43.13-1B chapter 11.

With that old model of the M998, check these items first. Start switch to see if the wait light comes on, if it does not illuminate at all, check the glow plug controller connected on top engine on the water crossover pipe. It may be disconnected. If connected securely and wires are not damaged, check the PCB under the D/S dash (Black Box) for continuity on the pins. If those check out last is checking each glow plug for ohms. Those components are what start your vehicle. Oh and don’t forget the batteries. You may have 12 volts per battery but if you have wet cell batteries I highly suggest check the CCA of both of them they may be well below the minimum of 400 CCA each and will need to be jumped. Hope this helps.

I certainly agree that it could be a problem with copper grounding to aluminum as galvanic corrosion can result. The easiest way to detect it is to disconnect the positive side of the battery and using an ohmmeter check the resistance between the positive battery terminal and the grounding locations. If you see a high resistance, that's your problem. I'd begin with the ignition system and related subsystems. Since the car does not even want to turn over, check the starter system first. This is very easy to do. Just check the resistance from the positive side of the battery to the ground side of the starter which is often the housing. I'll bet you find the problem there or check the solenoid system.

Hey man. Im currently a 91b (wheeled mechanic) and if the hmmv still isnt working then #1 troubleshoot is making sure you are in neutral #2 is like any other vehicle, check circuits and wire connections. Military gear especially vehicles arent ment to sit, they dry rot fast. So get out that multi meeter.

Uh...Aluminum conducts electricity very well. Most service wires for homes (pole to house, house knob to meter channel) are a stranded aluminum wire. And many homes back in the 60's (maybe 70's too?) were conductered in aluminum wire. I'm probably not the only nerd to point it out, but I'm sitting at my desk at the power company watching this...
@tubeonline6296 жыл бұрын
Josh Brown you would have thought of Matt would have known that, he probably was referring to loosing conductivity when aluminum is attached to dissimilar metals over time because of galvanic corrosion. The thought of Matt saying aluminum doesn't conduct electricity is shocking. Bzzzz
@singJJBplay6 жыл бұрын
Yeah man, I thought of that afterward too, but figured someone else would point it out. Matt knows more about animal anatomy than I'll ever know, so it all washes, I think. :D

"Aluminum does not conduct electricity"? I'm sorry, what? Every single metal known to man conducts electricity. The conductors in high tension wires in overhead power lines are typically made from aluminium. It would be impossible to weld aluminium if it wasn't conductive. etc. etc. etc.

“Aluminum doesn’t conduct electricity”.... is this why the make electrical wires out of copper AND aluminum both?? Aluminum actually conducts electricity VERY well. As a licensed master electrician I cringe every time you do something that involves electricity. I love ya Matt, but you gotta stop with the electrical comments....

I'm currently a 91B, and just some hints are you do not have a grounding issue. The wait light doesn't come on due to a timing module, the headlights aren't operating right because the wires are hooked up wrong. I bet you have the high beam wire in the low beam spot. We have a few trucks that the wait light doesn't come on but the truck will still start.

"Aluminum doesn't conduct electricity.." -Dr. Matt 2018
It's a bad glow plug control module. They go bad all the time on Humvees. You can get one on eBay.
@Iceaxehikes6 жыл бұрын
He can just jump the glow plug solenoid under the hood to get the glow plugs to come on and if that works it tells you right there the problem is with the glow plug card. Better yet, just wire in a manual glow plug switch and be done with it. Most people do that.
@mrraimundo1306 жыл бұрын
Aluminium does conduct electricity, just like any other metal. Not as good as copper, but it does.
@jayt37966 жыл бұрын
It is Actually twice as Good as Copper.. Fact.. Problem is once it oxidizes it doesn't Conduct well anymore
@mrraimundo1306 жыл бұрын
Jay T That fact is wrong, according to my knowledge. If pure copper's conductivity is 100% then aluminium is roughly 60%. The part about oxidization is right though.
@jayt37966 жыл бұрын
Aluminum, when compared by unit weight, is actually more conductive than copper and costs less. Thats a FACT. Look into and you'll see I'm right. I understand why you would say what your saying but I am correct. Im an electrician and have done lots of school on this matter..
@tondaty6 жыл бұрын
But still both of these are way better than steel! XD
@JamesEsau6 жыл бұрын
Jay T: While your answer is technically "correct" once you defined your parameters, it is all but irrelevant, since nobody measures conductivity of materials by weight (except maybe when doing a cost/benefit analysis). When people talk about conductivity, unless otherwise specified (you only did after it was pointed out that you were wrong), it is understood that they are referring to conductivity by volume (generally cross sectional area x length). Also, pointing out that you're an electrician means precisely as much as me pointing out that I'm an electrical engineer (hint: nothing).
@torkrench6 жыл бұрын
Aluminum conducts!! Different metals cause corrosion. Add more straps & clean grounds will help... better yet add a dedicated ground block with a 10g wire direct to frame bolt and/or batt
@Tombichrist1106 жыл бұрын
You're so wrong!!! Aluminum is the next best conductor to copper! You might not be charging properly because military electrical systems are 24volts. Strip your grounding locations to bare metal and install more and heavier grounding wires.

Just watched this now so I know you've already bought your car but I'm doing some input anyway: A 1969 Lincoln Mark III. This is stealthy and it's more of a banker's hot rod than the Merc Marauder. Years ago I drove a Mark III from Montreal to Calgary. It comes with a 460. The speedometer stops at 120 mph. Buried the needle driving across the prairies and the sucker didn't even break a sweat. It's interesting to pass a car that's doing 60 at 125. Prairies, remember, no side roads and zilch traffic. You can watch your dog run away from home for two days. It was a blast. SUCH a sleeper! (My 67 Camaro was faster, though.)

But Aluminium is also known for corroding badly when in contact with other metals, aka the steel/copper of wires. I would suggest an aluminium approved dielectric grease on all contact points.
@gg51156 жыл бұрын
Not with steel grommets crimped to copper wire after a year or so. Galvanic corrosion. The main ground to the block was fine though, no need to check it - not what they mean when they say check your aluminum grounds.

Replace the high beam control and that'll fix the low beam problem, next replace the PCB box that is mounted under the driver's side dash, you'll find to Canon plugs under the hood, driver's side by the windshield, 4×7/16 bolts and two plugs. Then reverse install and that will fix your glow plugs issue

Matt, FYI aluminum wiring has one big problem, over time connections get loose and need to be checked. Sometimes that all it is, is a loose connection that you have to tighten up. As an electrician that would be the first thing I would check. Just my 2 cents. Keep up the great vid's.

copper is more long-living over multiple bends, plus - it's got lower conductivity resistance, being a not much expensive as it is. That's the main reason everyone started swapping aluminum wiring for the copper ones

Jonas Klöckl Graphene is a form of carbon, it's not a metal...
@jonass12856 жыл бұрын
I know what kind of material graphene is. I mean... 100% conductivity means no loss of current through resistance (heat). So a conductivity of 105% means that the current is getting even BIGGER by 5% when travelling though the material. That makes no sense.
@cowach886 жыл бұрын
Jonas Klöckl I explained it somewhere else. The conductivity of copper is 100%, the pure silver is 5% better conductor. Thats the 105%.
@jonathanperque49416 жыл бұрын
Throw in a Smart Box and GP controller with a new set glow plugs and you will be good to go for that wait light issue. We also recommend a Kaskar Grounding Kit. Call us if you have any questions - Jon.
