Things to do 1st (To my knowledge) - Clean the rust off the frame and coat it with anti corrosion paint so you don't have to worry about frame rust anymore. - Get the owner's manual - Clean the engine so you can see the wear condition of the parts. (Yours looks like it should be fine unless you push it. Which you did do...) - Find out the the type of engine you already have installed, and work on improving that seeing it works just fine. - Install a more modern, yet classy looking radio/CD/mp3 player with surround sound. This will mean getting sound deadeners for the car unless you want a super charger interrupting the music. - Oh! New exhaust system!
@storm30166 жыл бұрын
Fudge the radio, how can a super charger interfere with anything? Vroom vroom :P I would upgrade the suspension to something a little more modern & make it shinny and black and do the striping in gold. It's not going to be much of a sleeper with that hood anyways so you might as well bling it up a bit.

Matt I think you bought yourself a re-badged standard Monte Carlo. The 70 SS didn’t come with a 350. It came standard with the 454 LS5... and it didn’t come with front or front side SS badging. It’s a bad ass car. But it’s a standard Monte Carlo my friend. The most sporty and powerful option was the Monte Carlo SS 454 package. Priced at $420, it included a standard Turbo-Jet 454 of 454 CID (7.4 L) with a four-barrel carburetor, rated at 360 hp (269 kW)[5] at 4800 rpm. It also included heavy-duty suspension, wider tires, "SS 454" badging, and an automatic load-leveling rear suspension. The Turbo Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic was the only transmission available for this package. The rear axle came standard with a 3.06 ratio but was available in 2.56 and 3.31, although it still cost $222 (£142) extra. Weighing only a bit more than a comparably equipped Chevelle SS 454, the Monte Carlo SS was quite a fast car, although it accounted for less than 3% of Monte Carlos sold in 1970.

Gavin Guier - please do your research before you start acting like you know it all ...The 1970 versions of the Chevrolet 454 were the most powerful, with the LS5 putting out around 360 horsepower and the LS6 delivering about 450 horses. The LS6 was phased out after 1971, and the LS5's power had dwindled to about 245 horsepower by 1973 thanks to stricter emissions control.

Keep the paint as is. L.E.D LIGHTS. New transmition too. Re colour the headliner and match the rest of the interior with the Recero buckets. New tires that tie in the wheels and get the power down. Matt, if you want that good BLUM BLUM BLUM sound, invest in a 3/4 cam. However, if you want a killer sound, with a very deep BLUM BLUM BLUM sound, invest in a FULL RACE roller cam, racing popup pistons, 2 1/2 to 4 inch High-Rise manifold, 2x four barrel carburetor running a minimum of 1350 cfs. Change out the rear-end to positraction at least a 400+ gear ratio. This will probably put you near 120 mph in the quarter mile. Leave the front wheels along, they're old school look. Your Dad will love it. So will the cops in your area. Run traction bars on the axles, 3 to 4 inch Dual Exhaust.

Being a paint/body man,my suggestion is to leave the body alone and pray that the respray and filler holds out. That might be an expensive can of worms you want to avoid. I see a LOT of red flags on that front. FFR,if a seller has the car ready to be lifted,TAKE THAT OPPORTUNITY! You aren't going to hurt his feelings and its going to give you your best chance to see what you normally wouldn't on first inspection. Brake pads,lines,rotors,drums? Sub frame/bushings? Driveshaft/UV's? Even if you're already waving a fistful of dollars at the guy,you can take the opportunity to make a mental note of things that might need attention down the line. From a buyers P.O.V.,you can also use this to your advantage. (I.E.) Say you see that the floor pans have been replaced,that's a dead giveaway that there's been other rust issues. Make a verbal point of it and consider knocking a few hundred from your offer.

Sorry to burst your bubble Matt, that's not an "SS". 1970 Monte Carlo SS, all were assembled with the LS5 version of the 454-cu.in. engine code CRN, as standard equipment, 10.25:1 compression, a Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor and a performance hydraulic-lifter camshaft, producing 360hp and 500-lbs.ft. of torque. A Turbo Hydra-Matic 400, three-speed automatic transmission and 12 bolt posi rear differential.The visual identifier of the SS package was the "SS 454" emblem mounted within the rocker trim extension on the bottom of the front fender. So you got a re-badge base Monte Carlo. Ps. The right quarter panel must be replaced, it has like 10 pounds of body filler ready to pop. I've been dealing with car salesmen and scammers too long to know better. Good luck...

Yeah I owned a 70 SS Monte for 6 months. Bought it used in 78. Awesome car. Insurance for me (I was 18) back then was eating me alive. But it had Swivel Buckets, Console W/Horse shoe shifter. Black on Black. Big block ran good after installing a cam, dual exhaust, and a Holley.
@webbdad12486 жыл бұрын
Is it really a true SS? Did you run the VIN to verify? If it is, very low production numbers. May not be cost effective to start pulling apart the car. May be a candidate for a flip... If its not a real SS then do a resto mod. Swap in an LS power plant , upgrade to nice disc brakes all around , update suspension. More fun, safer. Big power capable out of the LS series of motors, lots of market support.

Put a four link in the rear, coil overs on all four corners, upgrade your rear dif to a locker. Add a new Transmission and put any engine with a 500+ displacement number and forged parts. Finally, add any form of Forced induction. I would personally recommend twin turbo charging. While more complicated to hook up you could easily push 1200 hp. And don’t forget to upgrade your carb.

I had a sleeper - a 67 Camaro SS with a 350 that must have been built on a Wednesday. Muncie M-21, white vinyl over navy blue. Tweaked the timing a little, took the little jets out of the 4-barrel and put two big ones in, put a really strong spring in the distributor so no point bounce. Than I went out and hunted 383s with it. Total sleeper. Started in second and when the Dodge next to me pulled first to second he dropped back and I just kept rolling to about 60 in first, power shift to second and bye bye. Just for the record, my grown up daughter's ideal car is a 70 Chevelle 450 with a stick, posi and all that good stuff. Always loving your stuff, Matt. I know this is late but I subscribed earlier this evening.

It is also pretty likely that the guy is mistaken and it’s just been bored out and it’s really a 355, not a 383. Either way, some aluminum heads and a bigger cam will wake that thing up real quick, and save a lot of weight too. Then get rid of that old quadrajet and get something bigger like a Holley 650 or something

Just a tip, or two, from someone who’s been around the block a few times. Many posts are describing a different MonteCarlo from this one. It does sound like the guy sold you a clone or a branding switch. One way to know if somethings got leaks is to take a mirror with you and look at the engine. This guy could have pulled the MonteCarlo into the garage on top of a drip pan, or newspapers, and then removed it before you came making it look like it doesn’t leak fluids. Just “getting on it” test driving it shouldn’t have blown a gasket and the guys reaction is classic. He’s not honest. Love the MonteCarlo. Loved the guy who owned one back in the 70’s and he was soooo cute. I have a soft spot in my heart for MonteCarlos.

Keep the 383 and do heads, cam, roots supercharger or procharger, and 4.10 rear gear. With today's tech there isn't much of a power nap between the big block and small block once you start modifying. But that's just my opinion and it's your car. Im interested to see what happens with it

My first car was a '72 Monte Carlo and it looked like a car from the set of Mad Max. This was in the 80's though so I was able to blend in with the rest of my backwoods friends. I was fortunate enough to be around a lot of folks that were into cars/speed and ended up putting all sorts of nice upgrades on my small block 350. Look for some "double hump" heads if you keep the small block. Seeing your new car brought back some memories. I'm lucky to be alive after some of the stuff I did in my Monte. Enjoy yours.

you can only go so far with a small block before you start to run into heat and oil problems. they were powerful for their day but it was still designed in the 50's. Swap in an LS and you get more than big-block power for less weight. Also, LS parts tend to run cheaper than small block parts. Even the aluminum LS blocks are stronger than the old iron blocks.

in dimensions yes more accurately we could call them them Gen 3-5 GM blocks since all "small blocks" are gen 1-2

MATT!...did you check the vin# before buying this car?! That would tell you if it's an ss model or a stock Monte. Does it have a Posi Rear end?...SS would have a Posi. I know the hood is not stock, that's obvious, but Monte's didn't come with the "cowl induction" set up, I don't believe..That was a Chevelle option..and I don't believe they came with the fender "SS" emblems. Not sure about the grill on the Monte's. The original dash was most likely faux "wood grain". I know one thing for sure because my sisters husband owned one...that motor sounds...well...I'm not judging !..but it didn't sound like an SS small block. You should have been pushed into the seat ! it would have quickly downshifted and pulled MUCH harder than shown on your vid. I'm not trying to crush your excitement..but you may have a "clone" as they called them.Check the Vin !...It looks like a solid car....but I would have double checked. My advice would be a 427 stroker - gives you the small block weight savings with big blockish torque. You can easily push 650+ HP and 600+ TQ out of one and they are not that expensive. Plus it will drop right in because it's the same dimensions as the 350/383 stroker. Good luck Matt. Looks good.
@toolologist62746 жыл бұрын
Nice car Matt. Fix the oil leak, then take it to a real drag strip and see what it runs in the 1/4 mile. Then you have a baseline and can decide just how much faster you want it to be. I bet it runs 13s now. Which won't really feel very fast to you.

You chose wisely. My baby is gone after a hit & run. It was a basic 71 Monte Carlo 17 1/2 feet long. I may not care much for the hood, but the boldy lines look great. I believe you have a posi rear.... Enough with that, the rear trunk lock has an emblem, you need one ! So I will just send a pictures of my baby after a car show. Just a chevy 350, but a lot of fun. ! If yours is like mine, the oem steering horn went off every time I folded down the rear seat to clean the back seat, or have passengers.... She was certainly a head turning car ( even without the aluminum wheels )...... Enjoy it..... It's one heck of a car....... Kev

Nice car the good thing is 350 parts are easy to come by. But for future refrence if you decide to modify it throw an LS motor and procharge it not for crazy horse power but enough to power to move that boat. But you will have a reliable ride. Well nice ride have a good one.
@landonfranklin11706 жыл бұрын
Mario Smith Instead of a shitty LS swap he should just build the 350. Stroke it, cam, good ignition, fuel injection or 4 bbl, aftermarket heads and internals, drop a 9" in the ass, 4 speed toploader and you cant go wrong.
@Marz-px6vx6 жыл бұрын
Landon Franklin yeah its up to him i just through suggestion out there.

I don't think its a 383 stroker, I'd say buy a new crate motor and put a big supercharger and cam in it stroke it out port and polish the heads, then you would have a very powerful motor
@brandonleonberger6 жыл бұрын
What makes you think it's not a 383? Why would someone buy a crate engine and tear it all apart and build a completely different engine? I think buying a powerful crate engine or building the one that came with the car are both better options.
@Moibhin6 жыл бұрын
LS3 with tubro and forged internals would be sweet
@flyer737sw6 жыл бұрын
You clearly don’t know anything about motors. From the exterior a 383 stroker will look exactly like a 350 motor. Any stroker motor will add Torque while a motor than is Bored bigger, will give you HP.
@jasontruman12156 жыл бұрын
flyer737sw this is exactly true.... big heavy Monte Carlo needs torque
@tennesseeoutdoorsman91036 жыл бұрын
flyer737sw the reason i don't think its a stroker is becuase it sounds somewhat guttless, but it could have big mufflers on it, no i don't know everything about engines but if im right to make it a stroker than the cylinder bores would be bored out and then i think you pit longer connecting rods in it

I'm sad to say but you will have a lot of work with it. Personally I would start with the technical parts and the wiring, I hate all these loose cables hanging out of the dashboard. Next would be the chassis work. In general all should be done before you decide for (better brakes - maybe there are conversion kits available - the bigger the better), rear axle, Transmission and Engine and these all have to play along. A stroker is ok but either with a blower or a big block you will at first kill your Transmission (TH350 is in I guess - for any serious engine you should change to a strenghtened TH400) and second the transmission shaft and axle. Trust me, been there done that. ;)
