I'm 15 and my friends all do "streaks" and they literally cry whenever they lose their streaks. They literally go as far as using all their data using Snapchat and email Snapchat to get their streaks back. Whenever I hang out with them all they want to do is sit down on Snapchat or take selfies for their stories. It's so annoying, I hate Snapchat and I will never use it.

Lovely Doll Time kinda. Recently, we went on a school trip to France and our resort didn’t have internet. My friends spent 99% of the trip on Snapchat. When we were eating, when we going shopping, when we were travelling, during free time... they were using Snapchat. Pretty much all my friends used all of their data because they were so desperate not to lose their streaks. I’m sure I was the only one in my friend group who didn’t use their phone lol. It was awful, they ruined the trip for me because all they did was snap their friends back home.

The original purpose of Snapchat was sending nude pictures. Kids who sent nude pics don't have to worry for either participant getting arrested for possessing child pornography because they could just put a timer on it and then it just fades away from the physical world but stays in the other's mind. I'm actually serious, their logo even represents how you can do that and then it disappears like a ghost. Which is honestly showing how much thought they put into their logo too.

Calling the phone camera the '3rd eye' is such a great analogy, so accurate and true. This review was amazing. Everything you said was absolutely true about society now and the kinds of things Snapchat and other social media apps encourage. I had snapchat for a time, but deleted it for some of the reasons you mentioned. But one thing I found, was that because so many people use it and rely on it for 'communication', was that I soon became 'out of the loop' and didn't really hear much from anyone. It's sad that one can lose communication so easily all because it's based on these trivial, insubstantial apps. It's terrible the kind of things that people post sometimes, and especially the completely mundane things. Sometimes I wonder what exactly people are thinking, or if they even think at all. It's also sad how some people will watch this, hear what you have to say, and go on perpetuating the same self-centered, frivolous things they have been doing without even a second thought; some people will just go on and click to the next video in about five seconds. I believe that very few people, though they may actually understand what you are criticizing, will take time to think about it and reflect on their lives. The vast majority of people have become so caught up in displaying themselves and always being surrounded by others, that they forget to take time to be alone and actually think about things. I believe this is a necessary part of our lives. And also that their is a stigma that has developed against people who enjoy solitude and don't need to constantly be with other people. The problem is, that when you are occupied in tasks and engaging in social interaction, you're not actively thinking or reflecting. And so, if people are doing that all the time, it leaves no room for personal introspection about themselves, who they are, their place, etc. those bigger questions. Social media like this has instituted a kind of quick, instant gratification-lifestyle with short attention spans and continuous affronting of images, videos, and the like. We're becoming stupid, superficial, unthoughtful, and insincere amoung other things, and apps like Snapchat only serve to worsen this. We are rapidly becoming gripped by the sleek, tight dress of capitalist consumerism and mass-media instancy, slowly degrading ourselves into self-centered, self-induced tutelage, bound by that which we created. I deleted Snapchat for a varaity of reasons. Because my phone's camera stopped working was the main reason, but also because I never use it anyways. It annoys the crap out of me whenever I hear people I know boasting about how many streaks they have, when 90% of the time they just send the word "streaks" back and forth once a day. I hate that awful dog filter, I hate how people constantly play music over a black screen and put it on their stories (and it's not even good music, its always angsty emo music or sappy love songs), I hate people posting vauge-ass shit on their stories as they beg for attention, I hate the trashy news stories. That's not even the worst part. If you send someone anything in the blue chat part, they can save it....and *you cant do anything to get them to unsave it* and some people feel the constant need to save everything. I dont know why, but they do. So many people use how many veiws their stories get or how many friends they have streaks with as a source of validating themselves to others. And the nonconsentual pictures, oh the pictures! People take random photos of you when you're not even looking. *No one's safe!* I've been with friends who see a cute guy on the other side of the mall and they take a picture of them to put on their story. I have never, ever even concidered doing this because I am one of those people who hate their picture being taken withour permission. I don't want to disrespect other people by putting their face on the internet when they dont want to. But I have seen people wearing weird outfits or doing super funny things for no reason. I discribe these things to my friends and they always say "Why didnt you just take a picture of them?". They say it like it's the most normal thing!! I have continuously explained to them that nonconsentual photos are violating and rude, but still they insist and continue to do it themselves (especially taking pictures of me, when I'm busy working on schoolwork). This, my friends, this is why I have deleted Snapchat. Will I ever re-download it? Probably not. Do I agree with many of the things IHE has covered in this well-thought out video? 'Ell yes.
