Asides from just doing a literal spin off and revamping it kind of like the same approach of General Hospital. But many Hospital shows are kind of boring at this point. Can we talk more about my most hated part of this season, CLAY? Specifically, the fact that he never has to take responsibility for his actions... 1. Crashes Zack's car and leaves him for dead. Zack gets kind of mad at him part of the next episode and that ends quickly. 2. Takes a cop''s gun and waves it around at a school full of students and faculty. Gets tackled by cops and checked into a mental facility but does not get arrested or charged. 3. Breaks out of a psych ward. He gets to go home. 4. Walks into a police station and screams he has a gun in front of multiple officers. A cop hugs him and sends him home. 5. This is all beyond the main portion of the season which is covering up the murder of Brice. Is this kid legally immortal???
@agtl31684 жыл бұрын
Doesn't take responsibility? he's too busy taking responsibility for everyone else lmao. Lets not forget he spent a whole season being suspected for murder AND arrested which contributed to his mental breakdown in season 4 because his "friends" decided to beat up and kill Bryce.
@seanpariser73004 жыл бұрын
@@agtl3168 Let's back it up and ask the question of why Clay was being suspected in the first place? It's because he continuously made himself look guilty. Every character in the show had issues with Brice even before the rape situation but while they all were frustrated by this student that got away with so much because he came from a rich family and starting quarterback, none of them went to the guy's house threatening to kill him (which was caught on camera) or screaming threats to the guy in the halls of the school full of students. That was all Clay. His friends were pretty much suspects because they associated with Clay. The final season broadens his issues dramatically but he was by no means perfect before. Even this guy points out that walking in front of Tyler holding a gun was a dumb idea, and not reporting the situation was even worse (that second part you can also contribute to the rest of the cast). Bottom line, he does so much crap throughout the show, but this last season pretty much took his one or two illegal activities a season and cranked it up with not a single repercussion.
@agtl31684 жыл бұрын
@@seanpariser7300 Yes they did. Justin threatened to kill Bryce multiple times, other kids did, even the mother did. And yes, walking infront of the gun WAS a dumb idea. However, you're missing context. Had it been anyone else Clay would have never done that, but it was Tyler. And Clay knew deep down that Tyler didn't really want to go through with that. You wanted Clay to report the situation and have Tyler possibly kill multiple people before the cops show up, or have no one die? The idea might have been stupid, but that doesn't matter because the end result was perfect. No one died. Clay did some stupid things, suffering with his mental health, but idunno why people point that out, when Zach and Alex literally got away with beating and killing Bryce. Hell, Bryce literally got away with rape LOL
@seanpariser73004 жыл бұрын
@@agtl3168 I'm gonna have to disagree. Yes, it is true that more than just Clay threatened Brice, but Clay broadcasted his hatred of Brice to the world and on multiple occasions. Merely threatening Brice was only a single example of how much the writers allowed Clay to get away with. As far as "Clay knowing deep down that Tyler didn't want to go through with that", that idea is more of an assumption. I would like to think that any kid who brings weapons to their school do not want to go through with the action, but that is sometimes true and sometimes wishful thinking. Think of the torture Tyler went through with Monte. I would never condone shooting up a school but from what the audience knows, we can slightly understand where his actions are coming from. Back to Clay, he is reckless beyond comparison to the others. Most of his problems would go away if he simply told his very successful parents. He probably has the most stable family (mentally and financially) out of all the characters. His Dad is a dam psychologist for crying out loud, and his Mom is a lawyer. Even Justin, the guy who lets men have their way with him to score drugs can see that. They come into his life and he is going to rehab and caring about his grades. As far as the others go, I just think the writers were having too much fun adding in random crap like Zack and Alex destroying a principle's office or even Zack's alcoholism (which slightly makes sense until we remember this guy is supposed to be a 17-year-old kid). All-in-all, Clay is the only character that actively makes trouble for himself and others and as I said before, never has to take responsibility for his actions.

Clay literally had a personality disorder and extremely detailed hallucinations, to the point that he could even communicate with his hallucinations (possibly some form of schizophrenia). He was also clearly mentally unstable to a degree that he's a danger to others, considering he set up explosions without even being aware of his actions. These kinds of issues need extensive medication, and possibly the care of a closed psychiatric facility. Here's a hot take: You know how every episode this season starts with one of them giving a eulogy at the funeral of a character that is revealed to be Justin? As far I'm concerned, it should've been Clay. Why? First off, I'm fucking tired of doing whatever he fucking wants without consequences. Secondly, Justin's death happened so that they could have a dramatic, emotional finale, let's be honest with ourselves. Finally, and here's my real point, it feels like it'd be a natural conclusion for Clay. Think about it: starting from Hannah Baker's suicide, here's been on an absolute downward spiral, and the fact that he himself had unchecked mental issues didn't help his case. I could go on, but I just feel it'd be more.... organic, and less of a slap to the face if the funeral was for someone who died as a direct result of the events of the season.

It is a response to grief, but it is very rare for it to be seen the way it is, unless in someone with a psychotic disorder in which hallucinations are a common thing. It honestly would have better if they had started over with new characters in a different school dealing with someone else's suicide/murder/schoolsh00ting. There are so many other directions for the show to go. Idk why Netflix is so set on only using these boring ass characters who would have already graduated high school by now and who would have totally forgotten about Hannah almost entirely.

It would've been better if they'd dropped a nuke on the town so that the characters and their worthless "problems" could've evaporated into the nothingness they deserved.
@graham1214 жыл бұрын
I agree. In the first season I was pretty sure that they were all juniors and the show made it seem that way, but somehow they were only freshman? I think they had to do that to keep the show going and so they could make a season for each year of their high school class but still it was a major plot hole, but can't really blame them because they probably did not plan on making 3 more seasons before the first season came out.
@WhitneyDahlin4 жыл бұрын
@@graham121 that's probably true I bet they didn't know they were going to get more seasons but like I said they could have gotten creative and had Clay transfer schools because of all the drama that happened or just start over with whole new characters. That's what I would have done. The story from that school was already told and wrapped up. There are just so many other more interesting characters and stories they could have told if they ditched the characters from the first season. Or if they'd still focused on that school but a different grade and different students than they did. I was so looking forward to the second season I thought for sure it was going to go in a school sh00ter direction. I think this show in particular makes me so angry because I can see the potential it had. It was a show that wasnt afraid to show a suicide or talk about it. They could have even based the second season off a different young adult book like Speak or Insatiable. I feel like that would have been a really cool direction to take it in. Insatiable is an amazing book but no one ever talks about it. It follows four different highschool girls living four different lives with four different types of eating disorders and they all go to the same school but most of them don't know each other. It would have been so interesting and cool to do that.
@graham1214 жыл бұрын
@@WhitneyDahlin I completely agree. I think the reason why the first 2 seasons where amazing and it was a downward spiral after that was just because it got too unrealistic and the story had already been told. The first 2 seasons focused on actual issues that many high schoolers experience but once it got to the point of murdering a rapist then blaming the murder on another rapist and all the other crazy stuff that happened in the later seasons it just was way more unrealistic. The shows original purpose was to show the real serious problems that high schoolers face, but elaborately covering up a murder, multiple people having full on visual hallucinations, and all the other wild stuff that happened just made the show worse in my opinion. I think they should've gone a different direction with the storyline after it was pretty much wrapped up at the end of season 2. I like your idea of focusing on a different grade or students we never knew at Liberty, that would've been cool. I think it would've been really interesting if they focused on the adults in the show while they were in high school and what they had to deal with growing up. Maybe they could've focused on Mr. and Mrs. Jensen, Mrs. Baker, Tony's parents, and Mr. Walker. or if they did this as a spin off show after all 4 seasons they could've also shown Ani's mom, Clay's therapist, Sheriff Diaz, etc. Overall I think it would be cool to see this idea for a show, showing real high school struggles, in a different way instead of continuing to have to make the storyline crazier and crazier to the point where it's unbelievable just to add more seasons. Honestly the best direction they could've taken after season 2 would've been to just start over with a whole new plot with new characters, a new location, and tackling different issues. I think it was just lazy writing to just create content in the last 2 seasons in my opinion. Sorry if this is too much to read haha I just enjoy writing about it because I loved the show and don't have anyone to talk to about it.

"Staht a convosahtion" Reality: make money off mental issues while acting like youre being different
@nooffencebut81754 жыл бұрын
To summarise why this show is actually horrible: 1. Characters don’t have personalities, they are defined by their mental illness ( which is very contradicting because the show wanted the moral to be that people aren’t defined by their mental illness) 2. It’s basically a checklist, trying to fit in every single issue in one show. 3. The story isn’t progressive (since season 1 at least) none of the characters grow and learn. 4. It has no real message, basically what they’re saying is: there is bad stuff in the world, it sucks. And that’s just a few of the reasons, despite this I did actually enjoy season 1 of this show, but every other season is dragging the show on for too long to try and make more money off of it. It should’ve ended at season 1 in my opinion, but even that season certainly had its faults. Edit: Dear everyone replying basically saying: no, you can’t think that! You have to think what I think! Please relax and let me have my opinion and you can have yours, there is no point in trying to start an argument because I simply won’t reply. The inclusion of the “ghosts” strikes me as someone who doesn’t know how to write inner-turmoil/conflict creating an excuse for characters to just say their inner monologue out loud w/o it having any plot consequence or bearing on their actual relationships. @jacksonsmith2444 жыл бұрын
Adding ghosts can be done REALLY well when added properly. Narcos perfectly pulls it off when Pablo talks to his cousin Gustavo at the end of his life on the run. You just have to make sure that it fits the personality of the characters involved, fit the tone, and not be used as a crutch or blatant exposition. If you can write a ghost in to help a character during a moment of moral weakness, despair, poor perspective, or similar internal conflicts you can create a really impactful SCENE (keyword). Overuse and misuse just churns out this kind of melodramatic fluff
@buffystar34 жыл бұрын
There’s a kind of “ghost” character in Next to Normal, which was mentioned, but there it actually made sense I think. The character was supposed to represent the mental illnesses of the characters, and how the death of that character still looms over the characters after so many years. This also kind of acts as a sort of inner monologue or inner turmoil, but they’re still their own character. The ghosts in 13 reasons why acted more as different facets of the character they haunt, but in the musical they seem more complicated than that. Idk, that’s just my opinion. It’s honestly one of my favorite musicals, so I suggest whoever is reading this to check it out :P

"Starting a conversation" "Important for dealing with heavy topics" Actually, ya know what's *really* important for dealing with topics like these? Dear Evan Hansen. Why? Because it portrays these characters as actual people, both Evan and Connor aren't *meant* to be sympathized with. Evan was a dick and pushed everyone who cared about him behind and Connor was very abusive to his sister and just straight up a monster to his parents. And they most certainly don't get away with everything in the way that Clay does. Connor is ostracized by his peers and his entire family hates him, and it's well deserved. Evan Hansen also doesn't get the forgiveness of anyone but his mom, which again, is well deserved. It portrays mental illness far better than 13 reasons why ever could

American here: lockdown drills do happen, but it's nothing like the show. Usually it's more like, the teacher tells you a drill is gonna happen followed by everyone moving out of view of the doors and windows and turning the lights off. The biggest "fear" involved is the teacher getting mad or getting in trouble because you were giggling too loud while making quiet dick jokes. Typically an officer will walk around the building and make sure he can't see or hear anyone hiding in the classrooms and that the doors are locked. Not scary, and not even remotely the same as portrayed by this garbage show.

i had a mentally scarring lockdown in 3rd grade where they announced that it was a "red jaguar lockdown" (the code word for a real lockdown in our school), i remember being in a classroom with 3 other kids and a teacher who couldn't tell us what was going on for some reason. We ended up praying because some kid was scared that if he died he would end up in hell and so we sat there, crying, shaking, and praying with each others hands in our own hands, with the lock down sirens blaring, until it ended. It turns out that it was a fucking bear, it wasn't spotted even near the school, it was just in the general vicinity, i get having the kids be put into classrooms just in case but having a full lockdown and not being allowed to tell them whats happening, thats horrible.

We do have drills for those "lockdown situations" in America, but it's always confirmed to be a drill before it starts. Schools would never just randomly do a drill like that (at least mine never did), they'd tell the teachers at least a day before, which would inevitably lead the students to know. Heck, even when the announcement happens they specify that it's a drill. So yeah, the only things this show got correct was: 'Suicide happens' and 'People feel emotions'
@gregjayonnaise83144 жыл бұрын
Also, a school that pulled that would risk a MASSIVE backlash from the parents once the kids told them. 13 Reasons Why really diminishes the impact that parents have towards the school system. Sure, parents are brushed under the rug when they don’t have any power to sue or when the school is in someone’s pocket, but such a massive event affecting multiple students would definitely not go unnoticed.

Imagine how much better this series would have been had Hannah's mom found a diary containing the 13 reasons and SHE was the one who started the revenge plot. It softens the romantic portrayal of suicide, it gives more weight to the court arc, it leans more heavily toward her being the prime suspect in season 3, and it overall just provides an interesting and consistent dynamic between her and Clay. It wouldn't fix the bad writing, but it would make it at least slightly more enjoyable. Nothing could fix season 4 without a complete rewrite.

During the false alert, police came by with their guns drawn and we were legit scared for their lives but still quietly joked with eachother about our last words and dying wishes as a way to cope. People recorded videos of themselves and texted their friends and families. No one made phone calls crying for help and no one started panicking or screaming. We all just hid and kept quiet. as a mlm(since people keep asking, mlm is an acronym commonly used in the lgbt community that means “male loves male”, referring to gay and bisexual men, NOT multi level marketing) i feel like this whole show is taking the piss out of me, not representing me. the entertainment industry needs to stop using gay and bi people as a way to advertise their poorly written, crappy tv shows. we aren’t marketable objects you can use for monetary gain; we are real people, who go through every single struggle and beating that comes with being different. that doesn’t mean you can’t have a character who only finds the courage to come out later in the show- but there is a respectful way to do it. you need to show them being attracted to the same sex before they come out, even if just in a subtle way. if a show does the opposite and only establishes a character as gay/bi to seem progressive... it clearly ISN’T progressive.
@alinab.58524 жыл бұрын
not disagreeing i just wanted to add that yeah, when you have a teenager coming of age story (like 13rw) it‘s inevitable that, since this genre is very character driven and revolves around relationships, you‘ll have to research what it means to be gay growing up in ADDITION to other struggles that teens face (because surprise lol gay/bi kids also have other problems) and how to portray it accurately... i cant stand the „here‘s our random character > they‘re gay now surprise! > homophobic moment happens and everythings sad :( > but their friends accept them and they stand up to their bullies! happiness!“ formula lmaoooo

I like how the big Clay reveal is literally played as a joke in Netflix’s series Bojack Horseman. In the show Philbert (which is portrayed as having bad writing), it’s revealed that the main character was the one who was blackmailing and exposing himself due to the guilt of killing his wife. It’s literally played for laughs in that show. Also, there’s constant joking about how his former partner being a ghost is such an overplayed trope, and again, lazy writing. It’s funny how similar 13RW and the fictional intentionally bad show within Bojack Horseman are. I’d also like to add that the act of someone losing their grip on reality is portrayed perfectly in Bojack Horseman season 5. The end of the season feels like a true culmination of the entire show in a satisfying, yet devastating way. If you have not watched this show, I could not recommend if more.
