In today's video, I will be giving you my thoughts on the new Toyota LandCruiser Prado 250 and why you might want to buy a Prado 150 before it's too late. The base price of $85,000 with a lot of optional extras at this price is a big problem. The same amount of power and wheel placement issues will be discussed in this video alongside my thoughts on the styling of this new Prado.

Great desktop review. I’m facing the same dilemma. Should I fit UVP to my UK spec 150 basic stock model or wait for the new 250. Two things occurs to me about the design: 18” wheels - why would you fit those to an off-road vehicle Position of the H/L switch- I just know you’ll catch it with something when you don’t intend to.

Styling tastes are definitely a personal thing. I think this is the best looking 4WD Toyota ever! My own personal dislike is touch screens, less the better. Agreed that 150KW and 500NM torque are plenty. The V8 79 series has less torque. The long range fuel tank option has been a major selling point with Prados past, will be bad for business if they abandon it. Agreed that a front locker standard would've been huge. The GWM Tank has it! I'm about to take delivery of a Fortuner, and am seriously considering risking warrantee problems with an ARB front locker from new.
@NorthOz
@NorthOz 10 ай бұрын
Spot on. The fortuners are fantastic but I couldn’t see myself spending $20k more for a prado over the crusade. The gwm is an interesting mention but it will take another decade for people to trust the brand like Kia and Hyundai

I like the styling and if anything I think they should bring back the fj cruiser! I wanted an fj for so long but just wasn’t ideal not being able to have the rear windows come down or proper aircon in the back! That just made it hard in the Aussie summer taking our dog anywhere. The prado worked well with the roof aircon vents.
@NorthOz
@NorthOz 10 ай бұрын
Definitely bring back the fj! The reason I like the FJ is simplicity which made it have retro appeal. Simple interior and petrol engine made it indestructible. A complicated diesel turbo and hybrid with screens everywhere is not retro. If we had a basic version of this for $20k cheaper I’d be on board as that is what the fj was going for

Thinking from Toyotas view, this vehicle will probably over the next 12 years get more hybrid options. The front will be facelifted 2 times in those next few years. The other question is what will they do with fortuners? keep the existing model for a few more years as the cheaper option? Anyway, as a 50 year old, i like the styling, and i could see myself driving this to the supermarket :)

Good question about the fortuner. Next to the Prado now it’s a great option but next to the new Prado it will be a dinosaur. Hopefully they have some fun with the fortuner and make a basic version of the 250 without all of the extras 👍

Thanks for the post. With the 48v battery in the floor of the boot (which is raised to allow for it), how would you get a drawer system in? This is also why there is no third row seat version, because the batteries take that space. Pretty sure they can’t put the wheel on the back with a top hinged door.
@NorthOz
@NorthOz 9 ай бұрын
Agree with the rear door. Also, the battery bank would likely go in the floor which present problems when off-roading but it also will make modifying for drawers, stripped interior layouts for beds etc a lot more difficult

@@NorthOz I think it was the US 250 I saw with the batteries in the back, but that was the 2.4 petrol full hybrid, so the batteries for the mild hybrid we get here will likely take up a lot less space. Currently trying to determine whether to terminate 2023 Prado order for 2024 model. I’ve got the current GX on order (didn’t want 3rd row). Dealer reckons the new GX will add about $7 to $8k. The one thing I don’t like about the current model is the barn door on the back. Being a bushwalker I like to have somewhere to get changed with a little protection from the elements and a rear door hinged at the top provides that and just makes the whole boot space more usable.

I think it's high time the Lexus GX gets a diesel. It already has a detuned 3.4L petrol from the 300 so why not give it a detuned 3.3L diesel from the 300. That would be great segmentation and a Lexus GX would still be cheaper than a 300 and more importantly, actually available.

Let’s be honest, the proposed hybrid engine version is for all the soccer mums for private school drop-offs and pick-ups, but likely unsuitable for heavy off-road use (waterboarding, towing, etc). There was a lot of new Prado hype and media release about a month ago, then it seems as though there has been silence since!

I pick up on two things you said-the current Prado has enough torque, and the fuel price is going up, and going down..actually is on a long term upward trajectory. I have had several Prados, and 70 series, and more recently was a 76 V8 owner. I had to sell it because my wife flatly refused to travel in any longer because of the hard ride. So back to Prado, 2.8l 4 cylinder (initially very concerned...) but once I had settled in and done some sand with the caravan behind, I was very surprised. Especially at fill up points. My Prado is running at 35% lower fuel usage than the 76 traveling at a higher speed. So for me, the power and torque are 'enough', and are absolutely enough if I continue to get this kind of fuel consumption. Even bigger tank capacity (yet to be seen on the new one) than the 76 is a bonus. The killer for me is going to be having a spare wheel (please tell me it won't be a space saver!) hanging down underneath. Its a show stopper for me unless the ground clearance is higher. We wait and see.

Thanks for your views, Mark. BLUF: my wife has a new Everest Platinum, and I have a new Ranger Raptor. She came from a previous Everest. I came from a 12 year old Subaru Impreza WRX. When Ford announced the “Next Gen” Ranger in November 2021, we knew the Everest would have the same powertrains, and knowing Ford would be dropping a V6 into their lineup to go up against Hilux and Prado made me say that Ford had really gone for the jugular of Toyota, since Toyota didn’t have a smaller V6 diesel than the 3.3L Twin Turbo, or a more powerful 4cyl than the 2.8L. I posited that maybe Toyota would detune the 3.3L for Prado, or lop a turbo off, but couldn’t see then developing an entirely new motor as the global market trends towards ending internal combustion. When the next gen Tacoma was announced in May, that really threw me. It basically told me that the next Hilux won’t get better than a 2.4L Petrol hybrid; certainly nothing close to challenge the Ford Ranger Raptor. Back in July the engine specs for Prado were leaked showing only the 2.8L diesel, the ancient and gutless 2.7L petrol, or the 2.4L petrol hybrid - all which killed the enthusiasm for the 3.5L TT petrol that the next gen Lexus GX will get, or for the 3.3L to appear in the Prado. The lineup really indicates to me, a somewhat “mugging” of Toyota buyers, because it feels like whilst Toyota probably rightly protected the LC300 from sales cannibalisation from Prado, it effectively says to prospective buyers that if you want 6 cylinders; you will need to fork out decent 6 figures for it. Digital instrument clusters, automatic only gearbox’s, etc, Toyota have been dragged into territory that risks the pillar of their entire market ring strategy. Everyone - journalists and online commentators - retorted about how they didn’t like the screen on the Ranger/Everest controlling functions because “when they’re on the trail, they don’t want to take their eyes off the track to tap through screens to change things”. Toyota took that as “ok; no screen buttons”, and I have counted no less than 57 buttons - 17 of which are multi-function, delivering no less than 84 functional touch buttons for new Prado buyers. Tell me how that won’t require buyers to take their eyes off the road to make sure they push the right one? Finally, if Hilux and Prado are on the new TGNA-F platform, and are nearly as big as the LC300, where does than leave room for the next Fortuner?
@NorthOz
@NorthOz 9 ай бұрын
I completely agree. The ford v6 was and still is going to be a big selling point over the Toyota line up (under the 300 of course). It’s why I’m not excited. Why would I “upgrade” to a hybrid version of what I already drive? Just for a different front end and a stiffer chassis. Makes no sense
@howardnyika966
@howardnyika966 5 ай бұрын
Best comment i have read so far. I agree, Toyota is mugging their buyers and holding them at ransom. The LC300 is being protected for obvious reasons 17:31 but that means Prado and to an extent Fortuner will suffer, engine-wise. I also agree that the 2.7 litre petrol is ancient and gutless and why its still part of the engine line up beats me

I just realized another thing. In the 150 Prado you could get KDSS on the Kakadu spec but Toyota took that away from the 250 and only offers the front swaybar disconnect as consolation. You said your Prado had very bad handling. Im sure that wasn't a Kakadu. KDSS is famed for how good it is. Its successor, E-KDSS, is now only available on the absolute highest trim, the GX 550 "Overtrail" (what an embarrassing name) On the GX 460 it was available on every trim and that was just brilliant value with the amazing handling of KDSS and that glorious V8. Now it's just another core feature to segment for the big 300. Another example of how new Toyotas are worse than their predecessors due to profit maximization. Realizing that really gave me a sense of defeat, it's so sad. There are just too many Toyota yes-men fanboys out there who completely sweep aside the removed features and only repeat what the Toyota PR department is saying. If you truly love something and aren't blinded by that love you are not an enabler, you are critical with the intention of achieving something better.

I’ve watched the US reviews and they are selling this purely as their new landcruiser replacing the 200 series. I’m seeing in this model a lot of resemblance to the Tundra. Sadly right across Australia car prices are just simply out of control. I just don’t know why car reviewers are not spreading the message on luxury car tax which is applied to landcruiser. Luxury car tax was first introduced to protect Australian car manufacturing, we don’t have car manufacturing but we do have overpriced imported cars with luxury car tax.

No worries Mark. Probably more importantly than the aesthetics, I’m highly suspicious of the 2.8L engine as opposed to a small V6 (perhaps smaller/lower output than the LC300). Whilst I get the need to be different from the LC300, with a 4cyl 2.8L (and most probably a higher rate weight than the current model Prado), it doesn’t even compete with the Ford Everest V6!! Not sure what Toyota are thinking but I’m sure they have their reasons; however, I also note that they’ve also released a version of the 79’s with the (same) 2.8L motor 🤔

Price worries me too. In regards to the engine, Toyota did the same with the 150 series when it launched with the diesel engine from the 120 series carrying over. This time the engine isn’t exactly the same, according to chief engineer it’s has a new turbo which will make the engine more responsive due to having smaller internals and with the engine having improved efficiencies, they have maintained the same power and torque. My guess is the power and torque that the GR Hilux has will be the same in the GR Prado. Also the new Prado has the same wheel base as the 300 series and the 300 series has dual tanks, so the Prado could also have dual tanks or where one of the tanks is could be where they put the battery for the hybrid system. I think Toyota would not want the new Prado to have a lesser driving range than the current Prado, because that would be seen as a negative by many on the new Prado. Also l have noticed that the prototypes have been seen with plastic on the transmission hump that’s in front of the rear seat. I hope they carpet this area like as been with their past vehicles otherwise this plastic is going to get damaged in no time and look pretty ordinary and that will be a negative in my opinion.

I wouldn't be too disappointed with the new prado missing out on the V6. The 4 pot 2.8 is a pretty solid unit and 500 NM is ample for everything up to sensible towing requirements. interesting geometry with the Turbos and exhaust manifolds inside the V. I personally wouldn't use one as a long distance tow vehicle as we are already starting to see some of the expected heat buildup issues from an engine of this design after sustained heavy use. If you are towing heavy loads long distance i would recommend a larger capacity more conventional engine (Think small truck or Yank tank) If you dont really need to tow 4 ton the current model Prado is a great buy that with good servicing will likely still be running fine in 2040.

How can you say that the 8 speed is going to have the same issues as your 6 speed. Modern auto transmissions are (re)programmable. Because your trans is not dialled in that does not mean that another, in this case an 8 speed is going to have the same issues. It may, but it does not mean it will. Get your 6 speed remapped. I'm sure you you will be happy with result. There are a few companies that specialise in reprogramming a quality transmission like that of your Hilux. Enjoy

Because my auto patrol is like that, my hilux is like that, my flat back Prado was like that, my brothers fortuner is like that, my mums CHR is like that and my dad’s Prado wheelback is like that. It’s not an argument of “their ability to not hunt after a tune” is about this is how they come from the factory. I hope the 8 speed is different but unless they improve their tech in the transmission, it will be the same. As I said in the video, I haven’t driven an 8 speed Toyota yet but so this is based on my experience with the company’s various auto models in the past and from other companies as well with similar issues

Hey, Mark! First of all I think 250 will be more expensive not because of the same frame and suspension parts shared with 300, but because raw materials, CPUs and other components went up in price last several years dew to pandemy and war in Ukraine. Shortages and supply problems are still here. Next: diesel soft hybrid - I guess you maybe right here. BUT I'm sure Toyota will update the 1GD and it will be more powerful than current version or later they will introduce new, more powerful and adequate engine with due facelift. Transmission will be better for sure. The reports for the ten speed in the 300 and in Tundra and Sequoia in US are excellent - very smooth and no hunting for gears. Styling is personal preference and taste so I fully understand you don't liking it. I personally think it is a great design based on older LC designs such as 60 series and some 70s. Also to me it's very different in appearance compared to 300. Spare tyre will be underside only as the back door/hatch will be only opening upwards. So no sub tank unless they come up with another solution. I know for Australian distances it is mandatory to have long range tank. I find it inconvenient but aftermarket rear offroad bumper with swingout tyre carrier will resolve this issue. And because there will be a plenty of aftermarket accessories as soon after they start delivering the new 250 it will be no problem. And I'm sure many will modify their 250 to offroad monsters... :) Stabilizer bar disconnect is for the front IFS suspension as with stabilizer connected it doesn't have a lot of travel. This IMO is great addition to the 250. And not all Prado 150 have rear locker especially in Europe most of them are with LSD rear diff. So adding rear locker on all trims as standard is great. Hope this counts for Europe too.
@NorthOz

Thank you for sharing and great info too! Completely agree. The transmission can’t be worse so I think that’s a winner but the sub tank is a big loss. The same could’ve applied to the Prado but instead it got the opposite. The platform of the 300 and the running gear from new and old models of different vehicles that are not near the 300’s spec

@@NorthOz ok, I understand where you’re coming from. What you’re describing does exist in the US as a Sequoia. It’s an SUV version of the Tundra. In the same way the fortuner (or 4Runner in the US) has been basically a Hilux with a cheap SUV body and many carry over parts from the truck. Like leaf spring suspension instead of coils, cheaper interior, less equipment, transfer case without differential etc… but that was never the recipe for a Prado. Prado has always been a coil sprung dedicated vehicle with Center Diff and higher quality. That’s exactly what makes it good. Changing the bits that were not optimal is the right move. The 6speed was not ideal, let’s hope the 8speed is better. The ladder frame chassis was too heavy, now they have improved the welding tech thus better stiffness and weight. This does not mean it is as expensive as a 300. But it carries over the same principles which make it better.

I think FJ owners will flock to it, and many in the comments who express a like of it are past FJ owners. I don’t like brutalistic design reminiscent of Jeeps. Its exterior and interior look like the beginnings of a design brief, an unsophisticated start. The mechanical side is probably going to be ok but electronics, fuel tank issues, rear wheel access and other details mean I’ll stick with my 150.

GX550 V6 overtrail will be sought after in the U.S. but dealers will mark Them up or people will buyThem to flip ,so we might as well wait til 2026 for our order to get to the dealers ,the cars need to get lighter less of a luxury car with 3 rows of leather , massive sunroofs, 2 nd row ent screens and power. fold. tilt this and that go back to a basic wagon

Toyota makes zero sense. If they were smart they would have redesigned the FJCruiser to compete with the new Bronco and Jeep Wrangler/Unlimited. This is a hugely popular segment. The Tacoma is not the same. FJCruiser with a removable top, normal doors would have sold phenomenally. I don't get the point of the new Land Cruiser when they just redesigned the Sequoia which looks awesome by the way.

I think that they’ve actually done a good thing. The people have been complaining about the 150 shape not getting an upgrade in many years. This is the upgrade that they’ve decided to go with and I’m sure a lot of thought and research has gone into it. It’s simple, looks tough and they haven’t gone over board with the interior design. I honestly like the shape and I think with basic upgrades like Tyres, lift kit and some bar work it would look great!
@NorthOz

Thanks for commenting and subscribing. I Would like to hear your thoughts on the engine as well. The interior is very nice but the retro charm will be lost with bar work and it will look almost identical to a 300 with barwork imo. Lift would fix the clearance issue and it definitely needs new wheels 🛞

@@NorthOz Engine wise I’m sure we would of all liked to see abit more power. Although like you said, it’s more than enough for a 4x4. I guess Toyota has gone with the old “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, which is great in terms of reliability. The deal breaker for me isn’t really the “retro” look they’re trying to achieve, it’s more the solid look with the modern touch which will no doubt look beastly with bar work and some additional lighting. I guess we’ll just have to wait for the official release of the vehicle and see some proper reviews. Who knows, it might grow on you and we might see some North oz vids in your new Prado 😉.
