I used to be amazing at reading out loud and giving presentations form middle school all the way to high school, I could wing every situation without a problem and be thrown on the spot without a single bit of a surge of adrenaline or anything. But then college happened. Somehow and someway, I started getting anxiety and panic attacks just by the thought of being on the spotlight. Something irrational started happening in my brain that when everyone got quiet and my voice was the only thing being heard, it recognized it as a massive threat and triggered the classic fight or flight response. It's my third year in college and I haven't figured out how to deal with this shit, probably gotta go to a therapist, but damn, what worries me the most is how and why this started to happen.

I‘d really love to go to school when there weren’t reading I answere a lot of questions when my teachers asks some and I have absolutely no problem with it. But when it comes to reading my heart begins to RASE and I can’t stop it. I mark some words or write something down because I hope that the teachers think that I‘m busy and ask someone else to read. It began in 7th grade when I had to read in English which is not my motherlanguage and there were a lot of difficult sentences to read (at that time my pronouncing was okay but I was very insecure about it) and my Teacher said my face had the same color as my red scarf in front of the whole class and all began to laugh at me. Since then I have extremely panic to read in every Language that I speak. Sometimes I cry at night because I‘m tired of these panic attacks. I speak with my mom a lot about this and she wants me to read in front of her every evening and I have absolutely no problem with it. But in front of the class I just can’t. I‘ve even bought something against panic but it didn’t helps a lot :(

Last week in my biology lesson we were asked to read out loud and prior to that biology lesson I was always one of the best readers in my class my whole life. Then all of a sudden I start breathing deeply, my heart races and I can’t out my words properly. I beg someone help this has now happened in my last two lessons now. But I can read out loud to myself perfectly fine. But in classroom conditions of pure silence and my voice is the only voice I just can’t.

My therapist said this type of problem can be about having low confidence. I recommend you to remind yourself that this will end some day and dont stop trying to overcome the fear. My advice is to try when reading out loud to be more focused on the meaning of the words.

I have that same issues when reading out loud. And it's not that I can't really because through middle I had straight A's.. It just that when I read out loud I mess up a lot and don't know why. But if you told me to read three chapters and be able to to talk about it the next day, I would be able to tell you all about those three chapters. It's funny because when you said that u use to to count the students to see what paragraph you would read, I did the same exact thing....I thought I was the only one.

I remember a certain day I asked my teacher to not read and he told me; Don't worry what the people thinks or talks about you, if someone tells you to read better because you're grown up it doesn't matter, you be okay with yourself. Now please read as you read. I read as I could and nobody said nothing. I read pretty good and I never thought I'd be that "slow read person" in the class, but I am.

Sounds like you can definitely overcome this fear.

@@mrjamellfields Thank you for your comment, also I'm glad you gave us a solution for this issue. I'll practice to pass through this. Surely I'll remember your feedback while I'm asked to read aloud again

Yes it was such a pain! Such a pain! But growing up I think who cares. It's a style. There are fast readers that I guess pick up the 80% of what they read. I go slow and pick up the 100%. And I taste it. About reading out loud I don't care of becoming good. I don't like doing it. Let's let do it at those who have that skill. The few times I tried to read to kids they were a bit puzzled. They couldn't get into the story I guess. : ))))!
