The real dopamine comes when you have zero debt AND you have enough savings to handle any emergency. This Memorial Day weekend my water heater sprung a leak. I called a plumber immediately and they'll be out at my house next Thursday to replace the water heater. I have the money in the bank to pay for this big house repair. It feels so good not to be throwing the repair on a credit card. Priceless!

@@traceycancio1795 a water heater? What insurance? Never heard of any insurance covering that unless it was some kind of specific insurance or stupid warranty.
@9liveslisa
@9liveslisa Жыл бұрын
@@traceycancio1795 No. Home Insurance does not cover an older water heater tank that starts leaking. Every old appliance breaks eventually. Maybe a household appliance insurance company might, but I insure myself by saving money rather than paying monthly premiums. I have home owner's insurance for other home calamities like fire or a car driving into your home. Household appliance insurance can be expensive and then you are at their mercy. I'd rather put the $50-$100 monthly premium into my savings account than give it to an insurance company. My neighbor's hot water tank broke over 3 weeks ago and they still don't have hot water. They are going through their home insurance company because floors were ruined. They have a $1,000 deductible they have to pay and they have to wait for the insurance company to approve and schedule the work. They also have to use the company the insurance company approves.

My husband is like this. I handle the bulk of our finances and I checked our Home Depot store card today (we’re paying off our zero turn mower) and he’s spent $1,600 on who knows what in the past 45 days. Apparently it’s on file at the store. I told him we can’t out earn stupid spending. Period.

No, Home Depot does not keep credit card files at the store. You should be able to access your credit card purchases online. In addition, during the checkout process, you have the option to receive an email receipt of the purchases. No more, “Oops, honey, I lost that paper receipt.” He just has to tap that little button to have the email sent to you.

If you’re in a no debt other than home mortgage situation, it should scare you to take on debt. It should scare you not to have an emergency expense fund. It should scare you not to have at least 3-6 living expenses in the bank. Those are healthy “scares”. And if you have all that sadly covered, those “scares” disappear.

Then snow ball the minimums of the paid off debt to pay off the other debts smallest to largest. $6k to debt free is $6k but when working with "real money" vs "bonus money", having smaller and achievable wins is better when learning to budget, cash flow your purchases, beginning to see and internalize beyond making minimum payments, etc...

Real scenario Job security is a 50/50. One has $4.7K credit card debt and $5884.66 in checking account, $3175.04 in high yield savings, and $4168.92 in brokerage. Should they pay off the credit card debt and then have whatever is left over should they lose their job or keep the cushion and wait until they secure another job?

Pay off the credit card. At least you won't have that weighing you down, and like Dave said, it's freeing. Job is 50/50? Don't wait around for it to hit zero. Get a 100% job, today. Good luck
