After living on my own for years, a couple weeks ago I finally went to see my parents who live in another state. I thought I was fine being alone, but after seeing them again I realized I was genuinely hurt. I was carrying that pain around for so long that I forgot what it was like to have family. They laughed and spent time with me. They fed me. Most importantly, they finally sat and listened to me, maybe because I finally found the words. Because I've made it farther on my path. I was seen. I didn't know I needed that. I see them now as real people, and it was a beautiful feeling that I didn't know I yearned for. After leaving my mother and father to go to the airport, I started tearing up on the way. I was genuinely shocked at myself. Who am I, to be crying after leaving my parents? This isn't normal for me. And then I remembered: I'm their son.

My mum has stage four cancer, and my brothers and I try to spend as much time with her as possible. I can relate to what Aba is saying, as I had the same mindset before my mum's diagnosis. Now, I cherish every moment with her as a blessing. Keep up the dope content.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. My mom also had stage IV cancer and passed away three years ago. Cherish every moment, make her feel comfortable. Be patient and delicate with her. Sending love and wishing peace to you and your loved ones. The road won't be easy, but be at peace that you showed her love when she most needed it.

“Its like never seeing color & then seeing color all of a sudden” damn… this exact thing happened to me with my family and this line encapsulated the feeling so well. With family, its never perfect… but when you shift to gratitude & you realize life is fleeting… you just find yourself happy to still have the opportunity to experience them. Its a wild sensation to feel that connection there where it previously wasnt. I feel joy for you ☀️

Aba, I love how you always talk about the benefits of having a platform in terms of what you are able to do for others. The humility and generosity is refreshing! And Preach, that part about having to split from your parents, do your healing and then come back to rebuild the relationship was absolutely inspiring. You put words to what I hadn’t known I was feeling - now it’s time for me to get busy healing so I can reconnect and rebuild. As always, a pleasure!

@ilikecommenting6849 Жыл бұрын
Be careful not to be overprotective. It's gonna make them soft and ultimately lead to unhappiness. Children need to understand pain, adversity and how to overcome it.
@liznichols4916 Жыл бұрын
@@ilikecommenting6849 Thanks for that. Believe me when I say they do. The world provides plenty of adversity to overcome without needing a poor relationship with me. Trying to protect kids from all pain/consequences is far too common though and definitely not helping the child. I just want to be there for them to say "dang them consequences sucked didn't they? I still love you". That would have meant the world to me.

Having a solid, healthy, adult relationship with your parents is always such a heartfelt accomplishment. When you’re young it’s easy to not see things from their pov and to push against because we don’t understand but when that personal growth happens and it changes the relationship, it’s comforting to have them there

I tried to talk to her more than just shrugging and saying “it’s fine” and honestly, I’m glad I did, I love the moments when me and my mum are just sitting and talking about random shit that happened, or laughing about something together. I really do love her, I’m glad she’s such an amazing and supportive woman and this video reminded me that I should go see her again, I wanna just sit down and spend time with her again…

Happy for Aba! I can relate so much to this. I had a similar realization a few years ago with my mom. She worked all the time growing up, barely saw her. Now that I'm in my 30s and mom has retired, we go out for drinks, chat on the phone for no specific reason and I've gotten an opportunity to see my mom as her own person, and not just as a "mom". It's been cool. When r u doing a show in NYC?
