As someone who works in TV production, this thing is a beast. If you’re asking “what’s the point” of this device, you’re not the target audience

Excellent presentation. Thank you. A really interesting device. I guess I need to start looking for low power 100g home lab switches now.

Breakout cables will not work on end devices, they are meant for the switch side. Switch ASIC’s have logic to logically segment QSFP28 into SFP28.

Certainly overkill for armature filmmakers, but BMD just keeps killllllling it in the game

One quick thing, I would speculate that based on the use case, it doesn't have a power button because (like RAID options) it would likely be redundant. It would be plugged into another power distribution unit with a switch for it all. Plus it would eliminate accidental power loss at the switch where "oops, my bad" doesn't cut it. (just a guess tho)

Pricey, niche, very awesome.. gotta love BMD. Sadly I don't think my one-man occasional videoing and the odd cricket livestream (ooooh.. BMD replay??) is going to justify the cost!

Interesting product though I won't quite exactly call it a NAS - it's more of a branch local cache/ scratch disk; never meant to hold the only copy of data long-term. Very useful for distributing ephemeral data locally over the network - stuff like video mux/ demux or working scratch for multi-suite requirements. e.g. I've worked on a PoC concept where we needed to do transcontinental multipath live streams of 8K uncompressed video but the equipment didn't have 40GbE so we had to demux into quad 4K to be collated and mux back into a single 8K at the remote ends. This used to be the domain of enterprise distributed storage systems - e.g. Hitachi Cloud Platform Anywhere & Microsoft File Services Branchcache from several years back.

I've used many BMD kit for over a decade. Great stuff, great support but, but, yeah, very niche very, very PRO workflows and projects. As soon as I read "Black Magic" I immediately knew it wasn't made for me. Cool tho.

Thank you my next gadget to add to my list , if I win the lottery just after the flying car and the tesla bot T-800.

I just wanted to see the inside of the box. I wonder if the nvme drives are limited to just one lane like most of the nvme nas.

I have been stalking that black Magic NAS for a while, its sooooooo pricey 😢

But... can it run Plex server?

As someone who works with black magic products on a daily basis, it’s not a great company. And the products are not intuitive……as a general rule.

This statement is not an absolute statement. It’s subjective. They do have some good products.

They have great stuff as long as it works, but all their gear breaks within 3 to 4 years on average, which is a joke in the broadcast world..

very cool

No, bm hardware has the worst quality and stuff breaks after 3 years, only exception are the resolve colorgrading panels.. and they are not made by bm themselves..

you said only raid zero then thats a banned product its useless as a nas one drive goes your done so nope never touch it with a ten foot pole unless you can copy entire volume to anther
@adriantepes-qu8wm17 сағат бұрын
in 5 years it will be $999 used, if that
@jaimeduncan616711 сағат бұрын
Frankly I am not sure what is the point. Not only does not has raid above 0, but it's limited to 12 M.2 SSDs with the thermal constrains it implies and you need to open the box to change a drive, not ideal on a NAS. Also it can't go beyond 96TB On the other hand you have the QNAP TS-h1290FX plus a 25Gbe native, and you can buy a 100GBe card like the QXG-100G2SF-E810 that has two 100Gbit network ports. The unit supports up to 1TB of RAM , up to 1.4PB of pure SSD internal storage, and 16 core AMD EPYC 7302Pr.

Not impressive server , low end device

only RAID-0 = great way to sell packs of 3 or risk losing everything at any moment

Zero interest in a product like this. I doubt anyone watching you has a "massive TV studio", or can afford this device.

There is redundancy here. It’s in the entire verbal presentation of this device. How many times can you repeat the same information? Maybe write an outline of what you want to say before rambling on in a video. Seems like this could have been a 5-6 minute video instead of 23 minutes.
