Just a heads up if you have central air and don’t get good air flow out of your vents upstairs, they do sell vent covers with thermostatic fans that will boost the air flow out. Helps get a couple degrees better cooling with those far corner bedrooms. I put one in my sons room as it would run 8-10 degrees warmer than downstairs. It brought it down to about 5-6 degrees difference.

Maybe increasing the indoor fan speed as well? If you can and it's not already maxed out. Not always the best solution as too much air volume has detrimental effects on cooling and heating efficiency. Or maybe some of those first floor vents have dampers that can be slightly closed to encourage airflow to the second floor as well.

My parents needed an AC at their retirement home. The only time I have said a single hose was the way to go. The hallways at the facility are air conditioned. So they are pulling in cool air.

I have a portable AC like this and after a couple years I had to replace the hose because it became brittle and cracked. My biggest concern about this particular unit would be trying to find a replacement for less than $100. For my hose I paid $16 because it's super common.

To mitigate 5 degree difference, there is a 2-zone climate control. I live in recently built home and, of course, hvac contractor put completely broken dump valve in my home so 2-zone never worked and I always have 5-10 degree difference))) I found the valve was broken only when lose control wires completely fell of broken plastic and shorted the multi-zone control panel so any heating or cooling won't turn on.

That is exactly my house. 2 stories with a basement. My wife works from home upstairs. Initially upstairs would be 75 main floor would be 70 and basement would be 65. I put register fans in the upstairs registers. Closed the registers in the basement. And keep the basement door closed. Now we keep things at 74 upstairs 72 main floor and 69 basement.

The best ACs are the ones called splitters as they don't have leaks of air from inside /outside. These portables take space in the room, are noisy right next to the bed, so u cannot keep them on during the night (besides the air loss around the window adapter).

The dual hose are so much better. Hard to find in our area. In a rental we were at years ago we had a single hose, and it created such a strong vacuum in the condo it pulled cigarette smoke air from our adjoining neighbour through the small gaps in the shared basement wall.

I have the same unit in an upstairs bedroom for the past 2 years. I used to have a traditional style window unit but I didn't like how filthy the outside part of it would be when removing it at the end of the season and storing it upstairs for the winter. Carrying it down the stairs and outside to clean it off was quite a chore. This portable type has nothing outside, and I still use the screen behind it. Much cleaner and easier to put away at the end of the season.

Midea also makes a U shaped inverter window unit that has a SEER efficiency rate of 15, right up there almost as high as an inverter mini split system. It also has the compressor OUTSIDE of the window and the coil inside like a mini split making it the quietest window unit around. This one is impressive for a portable unit at 11.5 SEER value though. I just bough a LG dual inverter 14000 btu that is amazing. set the temp and it will hold it all day and night and cool @ 1000 square ft for $1.20 a day in south Georgia.

The shameful thing about these types of portable AC units is that you totally lose any kind of a seal that you had with that window and you lose the insulating properties that the double pane glass provides.

Nothing beats the efficiency of a window unit (unless it’s a mini split or central). Dual hose portable units work well and even single hose aren’t bad in a pinch. My old house had poor insulation and insane southern exposure. Upstairs would be 90 degrees on an 85 degree sunny day with the windows open. Would take forever to cool down at night, even with fans in the window. Initially went with a single hose portable from Costco. That helped some but only one room. Got a 12,000 btu window unit off craigslist that fit a slider and used some heavy duty shelf brackets to install it. Filled the gap with plexiglass. Made a massive difference. Eventually put another one in the daylight basement close to the air return and by running the house fan, it was almost like central ac, but if you wanted to be in that room you had to shut it off or you’d be frozen. Being poor it was the best I could do at the time with young kids, and the power bill sucked. My new house built in the 90s os better sealed and insulated. Put central AC in it after moving in. I have the same problem. No basement but two floors. I have to set the downstairs thermostat to 65-66 to get the upstairs at 70. I run the central blower fan almost continuously in the summer but it still never equals out. Maybe I need a damper for the lines in the crawl space to force more air out upstairs? I have toyed with the idea of a mini split but it really doesn’t justify the cost in the cool PNW so we just use blankets downstairs 😂. On this unit, it’s odd that the window portion is black. It seems like that plastic would get hot in the sunlight. Typically they are white.

I live in a rental and my portable ac is a lifesaver. It's is loud, yes, but that doesn't bother me that much compared to sleeping in a sauna. If i could pay for a mini split and have permision to install it, i would. The old model that's in our loving room can be placed outside and feed the cool air in to the home, but would piss off everyone around me having that bugger run outside 24/7.

@@TheHandyman1 That's nice, I wonder if they made it so the condensation drips on to the heat sink and gets expelled out the exhaust hose. I had to put mine in a skid tub after the 1st or second summer of operation (it doesn't even go into the drip pan, but I never saw a reason to try and fix it since it will pull a gallon of water out of the air overnight). But I've had it for something like 5-7 years now and it still does the trick.

Midea makes a U shaped window unit that is like a mini split in a box. The compressor is outside the window and the coil in inside. Has a SEER value of 15, which is close to mini split performance. The only upside to a portable ac is that it can be mounted in a sliding window where you can't mount an standard window unit. Still impressive that Midea made a 11.5 SEER portable though.

Costco just had the unit in white on sale for $449. I picked one up and it's Pretty decent, but depending on the mode there are 3 drain ports. In AC it should exhaust all the moisture, but you may need a baking pan on the floor to drain excess... then in "dry" mode, you need to gravity drain somewhere, and it seemed like all the water I'd collect was coming from outside humidity.. Maybe need to take it out the window??? , but then in heat mode there is another drain that has a condensate pump that you can pump out the window.. I also don't like how when its off, outside heat / humidity comes into the hose, needs some sort of shutter to seal air from coming in, as the dual hose is not insulated, and taking it out of the window is not all that quick.

@coreybomhoff4784
@coreybomhoff4784 8 ай бұрын
My answer to that question would be.. in order to keep your room cool, the exhaust is rejecting the heat that the condenser is putting out in order to cool your high pressure high temperature discharge gas being put out by the compressor. So in order to be as efficient as possible we need it to reject the heat outdoors where it’ll naturally flow due to the fact it’s rejecting hotter air then the air outside or it should be atleast so it’s the path of least resistance. Also I’d tell them about that diverter or divider.. separates the air it’s rejecting vs the air it’s pulling in. How the fuck can I start a handy man business…? I’m an hvac tech and I’m so down for doing a business like what you do.. I’ve done carpentry as well.. any advice for opening up a local handy man business???
