The creators are extremely knowledgeable about the actual Fate lore, so they make a lot of jokes about it. That said, this is probably my favorite abridged series because I know the references they make.

With that in mind, I’m very curious how this series will hold up for a first-timer, it does contain way more deep lore cuts than the average abridged series, but we love it all the same. The flashes 'Actually Satan' saw were flashbacks to the previous route. The mainline series of Fate has Fate stay night (Fate route, the flashbacks he has), Unlimited Bladeworks (this route) and Heaven's Feel (last route, has 3 movies).

The part where Archer talks about his "Mind's Eye" is because he has an ability called "Mind's Eye(True)". Due to countless battle experience he has gained the ability to predict and react to attacks instinctively, almost bordering on precognition. Basically, he has spidey-senses. They don't really touch on this in the anime, but in the VN each Servant has a cool character sheet that lists their stats and abilities. Poor Archer has an "E" in Luck.

Ah, yes. The Holy Grail War or as it's better known Murder Death Kill is about seven wizard people fighting over the Holy Grail to make a wish. To fight these wizard people summon superhuman beings called Servants which are embodiments of different legends across time and they are classified to seven specific classes such as Baber, Archer and Lancer however only one of each class can be present at the Murder Death Kill so if somebody had already summoned Baber then tough luck. To keep these beings that could chop wizard peoples' heads off in a blink of an eye in check wizard people have three get out of jail cards called Command Seals which force the Servant obey a single command for each seal. Each Servant has a Noble Phantasm that's basically the item or ability they are famous for thus using it reveals the true identity of the Servant to those who know a lot of legends.

2:50 "Who are you?" That is the big question. In the original he claimed to have no memory of who he was and didn't give Rin his true name, something newly summon spirits are suppose to do for their masters so they can make full use of their abilities. The Abridged version operates under the assumption you already know who he is, although they don't flat out tell you. Instead they make several jokes regarding his identity, which could be viewed as hints if you haven't watched the original. We got several in this episode. I am curious if Kyle can figure out who Archer is before the reveal. Be sure to pay close attention to what he says, especially when hastily tries to play it off or change the subject.

Cu Chulainn is from the Ulster Cycle of medieval Irish mythology, which was several centuries ago. However Lancer can speak Japanese perfectly well. However it doesn't give you more localized information such as the name of a local bridge or the names of random people. It certainly wouldn't tell them were a nice cafe is.

The servants have powers associated with their class and their identity as a hero (often in the form of an iconic weapon). They all fight to the death Highlander-style to win the grail!

Man, I love Fate/Stay Night. My favorite story of all time, probably, and this is an amazing Abridged on top of that. But this one is consistent with everything Project Mouthwash has done. Remember how many jokes in Bleach S make no sense if you haven't seen Bleach? This is worse. This Abridged makes deep cuts that are often only caught by Fate fans who are already completely immersed in the entire franchise. Not too many of those happened here in episode 0, but be prepared for a LOT of deep cuts in the future. Nevertheless, this Abridged also does the characters as good as DBZA, SAOA, YGOTAS, Goblin Slayer Abridged, etc. There's a reason it's as popular as it is, and I'm stoked to watch you watch it.

Me and a friend discussed the fact that the servants could technically be from any time period. Since Billy the kid and sitting bull are from the late 1800s, we thought why not even more recent people who became legendary. This brought us to Audie Murphy (most decorated us soldier in history) and John Basilone (famous in the marine corps) being possible servants. We then realized Chris Kyle would technically qualify too. We went down a rabbit hole at this point, theorizing on possible servants, and since tesla and Edison are servants in the fate universe, why not Oppenheimer and Einstein? Since we have Shakespeare, why not Tolkien and Hitchcock? If robin Hood, why not John Clark from Tom Clancy? As I said, we started stretching it.

servants is a term used by the fate series to describe what's known as a heroic spirit (great heroes from history and mythology) when they are brought back to life with a body made entirely out of mana, because they constantly need mana to exist they need a master to feed them that mana, thus they are bound to the will of the summoner thus a master and servant bond. also the original fate stay night story was one of _those_ kind of visual novels, take of that what you will but because it broke out into so many different mediums those connotations have fallen to the wayside in recent years. also it's a running gag across the franchise that you can count the number of archer-class servants that actually use a bow and arrow on one hand, and that list includes freaking robin hood himself.

So... brief explanation - I'm going to try and avoid spoilers - Fate/Stay Night was originally a visual choose your own adventure novel/game... with multiple routes/endings. They eventually made an anime out of the game... then they made another one... and another... and another. I think in total there are like 4 to 6 different series based off the same visual novel. The original anime was just called Fate/Stay Night... the second one was "Fate/Stay Night - Unlimited Blade Works" but was an OVA of the original. Then confusingly years later they did another series also called "Fate/Stay Night - Unlimited Blade Works". Then there was another OVA "Fate/Stay Night - Heavens Feel" which is like a 3 part series. There maybe a few others I'm forgetting... and more series under the general "Fate" name... the only that kind of matters is "Fate/Zero" which a prequel to this series.

Correction the first UBW was a single movie and Heaven's Feel is a trilogy of movies. OVAs are something different. Also you can skip the UBW movie and go only with the series, but I can not recommend the Heaven's Feel movies enough... provided you go into them with some prior knowledge, meaning you should have at least watched said UBW series. Because Heaven's Feel cuts out a whole lot of redundant information and fully assumes you have some base-line of knowledge. Watching it withotu the prior series is probably even more confusing than watching the abridged without having seen the source.

This series has a **lot** of background. But to explain the basics 1) In this setting there are periodic Holy Grail Wars, the winner of which gets a wish granted by the Holy Grail 2) There will be 7 Masters with 7 Servants. The 7 Servants will be one each of 7 Classes. Archer, Saber, Rider, Lancer, Caster, Assassin and Berserker 3) Each of the Servants are based on historical figures 4) Masters and Servants are meant to work together, but both are individuals. But Masters start with 3 command seals that force the servants to obey 5) Noble Phantasm=Ultimate move Hopefully that's enough for you to get into the show, there's obviously more, but hopefully that'll get you started

Wish I could’ve been here sooner, staying at my moms due to a storm knocking out my power again. Anyway I am here to answer questions because you will definitely need it for this franchise. First off this show is based on the *second* route of the Fate/stay night visual novel. They never made an anime adaptation of the first route. There was an older anime series using the first route as a baseline but it was more a fusion of all three routes. This first part however is taken from the prologue which is the same for all three routes. The Fate franchise is also actually more of a sub franchise. Nasu, the one who wrote the visual novel actually has his own connected multiverse with all of his works which includes Witch on the Holy Night, the Garden of Sinners series, the Tsukihime franchise and its spin-off Melty Blood. Funnily enough the timeline this visual novel falls under mostly depends on Zelretch *not* becoming a vampire during his battle with the vampire god of the moon.

Scrolling through the comments to see if I can add anything. Looks like most of the important (non spoilery) parts were covered. However, I will specify two very important things to know going forward (that I don't recall seeing someone mention). First, any time a servant is summoned, the Holy Grail gives them extensive knowledge on the world. So, even if a servant from like 10,000 years ago was summoned (before the English language was invented) the grail would give them perfect knowledge on how to speak all languages, modern society, etc. Just anything the Grail feels like they need to know. Also, as a lot of people mentioned, the Servants are basically famous historical or mythological figures summoned to the modern world and given physical form through Magecraft. So, they have "true names", but they refer to themselves by their class (Lancer, Saber, etc.). They do this because revealing your real name gives your opponent a huge advantage. Servants all have noble phantasms: their ultimate moves. However, the noble phantasm is always in some way linked to their legend. So, if you know who they are you have a guess on how they'll fight, what their ultimate move is, etc. The battles in Fate aren't just: is my power level higher. It involves strategies and good match ups based on a fighter's skill set.

Servants are Heroic Spirits. The spirits of the heroes of myth, legend and factual history given a temporary body in what is known as the Holy Grail War or Heaven's Feel Ritual. The rules is one Servant (the Hero) per Master (the Mage). The Master and Servant terms were made because Mages are egotistical as f*** and feel like they are better than people who've literally carved their names and legends into the fabric of reality. The Grail War is a last person standing competition/battle royale to the death. The last Master and Servant pair standing is granted one wish each for the Master and Servant by the Grail after all of the other six out of seven heroes are slain in combat.

The fate franchise started out as visual novels that back a lot more details and secrets that about half of them don’t explained in the shows. Basic synopsis is this is the 4th holy grail war of 7 heroic spirits from history and their mage summoners

Hello typing this to give some base knowledge of Fate due to this being an abridged series that assumes you have watched the original show and few other shows from this same series. This show revolves around the Holy Grail War that takes place roughly every 60 years in Fuyuki Japan. At the beginning of each war 7 mages are selected to fight for the Holy Grail to get a limitless wish. In this world not everyone is a mage and magic is kept hidden from regular people. Each master summons a heroic spirit from the past to fight for them who is either a real hero or from various legends(all of which really happned in this world) whom they are responsible for feeding mana to keep them in our day and age. Each Hero is summoned into one of 7 classes, as seen in this episode we know there is an Archer, a Lancer, and a Saber(I'll let you see the other 4 as they are introduced). Each master is also given 3 command seals that can be used to force a Servant to do something they normally wouldn't do, and Rin used one of hers already near the start of the show. This war is fought until only one Master and Servant are left standing to get their wish granted. Sorry for the chonky paragraph, but there are a lot of moving parts and concepts in the Fate series and thought this could help you understand things that have been introduced so far without spoiling anything. I hope you come to enjoy this series.

Oh a little bit more. Servants go by whatever class they are summoned into. This is to keep their identity hidden as they have all the strengths and weakness they had in their legends...pushed to superhuman capabilities as seen in the episode.

For context, Fate revolves around a secret ritual known as the Holy Grail War. In this war, the Grail is an omnipotent wish granting device that randomly chooses seven mages to become "masters". Those marks on their hands are the proof of one being a master and are known as command seals, which are very important as they allow you to command a servant. It serves as the link between the master and servant that keeps the servant anchored to the world. Furthermore, you can use a command seal to force a servant to perform an action. You only have 3 though. Servants are actually powerful familiars known as heroic spirits. These heroic spirit are based off of real world history, legend, folklore, mythology, and literature. Examples not in this series would be like Emperor Nero, Merlin, Achilles, the Headless Horseman, or Frankenstein. They are divided into seven classes: Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, and Berserker. They each have their own class skills, personal skills, and stats (C rank luck, B rank strength etc). On top of that, they have powerful abilities called Noble Phantasms (essentially ultimates). Their Noble Phantasm is either a weapon, trait, or concept they were most famous for in their legend. For example, Excalibur, Gungnir, Longines, etc. This is why servants use class names and hide their true names. If you knew their legend, you know their strengths and weaknesses. Plus, on top of being energy consuming, Noble Phantasms practically give away their true name. All of your other questions would kind of spoil the series
