The whole marble thing was a metaphor for the events Fate/Zero, the prequel series to Fate/Stay Night. Archer's identity is a mystery until near the end. However, there are many hints dropped throughout the show that point to his true name. Shirou's backstory is tied into the final events of Fate/Zero. The war is supposed to happen every 50-60 years, but due to shenanigans from the last war, Fate/Zero, it's only been 10 years. Rider is, in fact, Medusa. @@julianrobertson1869 it's never outright said, to my knowledge, in the abridged.... Yet. Tbf, it is EXTREMELY, HAAAARRRDDD implied by the last two most recent releases, but not implicitly stated. While I do think he will understand what's happening by then, or at least have a theory cooking in his head, it should be noted there is no guarantee someone is going to pick up on all that, when it's never expressly stated. Hints are hints, but they mean little without putting together the connotation behind them.... I that sense, sure, let's say Kyle has formulated a theory based on this episode. It doesn't mean he for sure knows, as it's not for sure confirmed. Just... Using that as an example of what I mean tho: maybe the signs are abundantly obvious to some, but especially with people that just go with the flow when watching this kind of content (hint: Kyle is not unlike this.) it's not guaranteed he is going to just "know" the connotation to the references being drawn. Tldr, don't get your hopes up that he, or anyone else, will magically "know" what's happening, regardless of the number of dialog alluding to a certain reference.... At best, it just creates a theory in one's mind. But that rly isn't a confirmation, now is it?

The inside shoes is a japanese thing. Its very common in houses, where its common for guests to remove their shoes and the host to provide slippers, and schools generally have it more like dress code/uniform shoes being inside shoes and outside shoes being whatever.

Not exclusively Japanese. I'm Austrian and over here it is very common to wear your outdoor shoes only outside and have indoor shoes, slippers or something for inside. And not just in private homes, but also most schools. Once you get to the university/college level this fades away, but in Kindergarten, primary and high school they require the children to take off their shoes and wear indoor shoes inside. And often they also enforce "Turnschuhe" for the gymnasium, since the regular indoor shoes leave streaks on the floor and aren't exactly suited for the physical education anyway. When I first heard that in the USA it's common to wear outdoor shoes inside their homes, that was quite the culture shock to me.

30:04 it is indeed very rare, but shirou is rarer. mages have both an origin and an element, both can be basically any concept but elements tend to be one of five for the most part(fire, water, earth, air, ehter). shirou however has sword, for both. he is the only canon example of matching origin and element in all of fate. while i'm pretty sure we *know* there are others with all five basic elements even if they don't appear

Yeah it's a basic spell,but it's only limited by user's mastery of it.Shirou is only capable to reinforce pipes or sword's at the begining of the story (tables too at this point but that's due to him using someone elce's knowledge and skill's).And some mages are even capable to reinforce servant's via madness enhancement but without madness part.

@@алексейпугачев-л9й The anime seems to entirely skip this issue prior to the dolphin scene (and doesn't outright say so even after, but there are visual clues), but Shirou is also able to reinforce his body, to at least some degree. But he has a really hard time reinforcing anything other than swords or sword-like objects. The reason for that is, that Shirou's origin is "sword," which gives his magic a compatibility boost with anything sword related, enabling to overcome some of his lack of magical education, that renders him so incompetent with any other kind of object, barring the occasional emergency.

Yeah it's regeneration is pretty nutty. Basically the only way to kill someone who had an activated Avalon is to destroy their brain completely by blowing open their head. In Fate Zero it was capable of healing completely crushed heart and ribs within seconds.

I'll try to comment on as much as I can, while actively avoiding spoilers. 1:56 That's Shirou's dad Kiritsugu Emiya. He has some relationship with Kotomine, the priest, which explains why Kotomine basically acted entirely different once he heard his name, which that guy Kotomine spoke to in the end of episode 2 referenced. He's also one of the protagonists of Fate/Zero (which covers just how he knows Kotomine), the broad strokes of which he explains with the whole "marble" bit. This is a flashback to the night he died. Natural causes, though. 7:42 It isn't covered in the abridged series, but every Servant summoned by the Holy Grail is given vaguely defined "knowledge" to make the war easier. For instance, it will teach an Irish man from literally 2000 years ago (Also known as Lancer, Cu Chuluainn, "Irish Hercules", and Mario Mario) can speak Japanese. The grail just gives them common knowledge of the era... except Saber has no idea what Hiroshima is, which is the joke. 9:07 Okay, so the entire role of a Master is to provide mana to their Servant, so they can continue to exist. No mana means no Servant. Just existing drains mana, nevermind fighting. To conserve mana, Servants can enter a "spirit form" where they become invisibly and intangile to conserve mana. As you notice, Saber is unable to do that. Likely because Shirou is such a terrible mage that he is actively dragging Saber down. 16:14 Fate/Stay Night is part of a shared setting with a few other things. Yes, vampires are a thing in it, completly separate from the Mages and the Servants. 18:18 Her name is Rin Tohsaka. It's pronounced like Tō-sækæ. But calling her Toe Sucker is a relatively common joke. 19:14 This entire bit is why I'm doing this at all. This abridged series doesn't explain the lore behind the series despite said lore being not only relatively convoluted, but also pivotal to understanding some of the references. 19:37 Think of that thing on her arm as an organ that has been donated from one member of her family to the next for literal generations, only that organ also contains the collective magical knowledge and power of everyone who has had it. Kind of like a combination between "metaphorical organ" and "spellbook". 20:29 You remember in episode one, where Shirou used magic to (attempt to) fight Lancer with a poster? Rin can do that too, but with her body parts. 30:36 Again, it isn't covered in the abridged series, but in the source, Kirei tells Shirou that "the great Fuyuki Fire" that killed a thousand people, including Shirou's birth family was a result of the 4th Holy Grail war. That's what Shirou was referring to when he told Saber he's seen worse things than his chest gauged out, hundreds of people burning to death begging for help that never came.

Saber isn't unwilling, but unable to turn into spirit form. She's something of a special case, as far as heroic spirits go, which results in the upside of remembering previous summonings, but the downside of being unable to enter spirit form, neither of which is normal Servants. Yes, Shiro saved Rin. If he hadn't put out his arm, that spike... thing would have gone right through Rin's head. Guess he only owes her for saving his life once now. ^^

@@TheArcSet In Fate/Zero there are some comments about Saber feeling insecure about her "failure" to go into spirit form and Kiritsugu most certainly did everything right in summoning her. Furthermore spirit form uses up less mana than having the Servant physically present, so I very much doubt that getting too little mana from her master could be the reason to not have access to spirit form. If anything a lack of mana throughput should make it harder to take on physical form. When I read the novel initially, I thought Saber's peculiarities are due to how Shirou summonered or, or rather how he technically didn't even summon her, but she popped out by some cosmic chance. But no, somewhere it was explained that Saber is a special kind of Servant, due to how she made the contract. Usually people form a contract with the world to get something (magical powers, artifacts, whatever) during their life and then have to pay with their soul when they die. So they get the goods right away and then have to pay the soul at a later date. Now with Saber this process is reversed. She only formed her contract at the moment of her death, with the condition to obtain the holy grail. But the planet can't summon the grail to her, so it makes her a heroic spirit, to allow her to obtain it for herself. Since she has giving the payment of her soul, before getting "the goods" and is a heroic spirit so she can obtain the thing for which she traded away her soul, the usual rules apparently do not fully apply to her. This fact that she didn't receive the planet's part of the bargain, also leaves her in the unique position that unlike any other servant (I am aware of), she alone can just decide to no longer be a heroic spirit, which will bring her mind back to the moment of her death to ... well, die (or be put in a magical coma on the island of Avalon, depending on how accurate the Arturian legends are to what really happened canonically in the past). !!Spoiler!! Which is how the Fate route actually ends. In the original she comes to peace with her decisions during her life and peacefully dies, once Bedivere returns Excalibur to the Lady of the Lake... and in the Realty Nua version, there's bonus content, unlocked when you've read through all three routes, where just like in the real-world legend, Arturia is put in a magical coma on the island of Avalon.

The purple hair servant is Medusa. The chains are a representation of her snakes, and she fights with her eyes covered as a reference. Unfortunately in the original series and the non-abridged version of unlimited blade works, you don't learn too much about her. Its explanation is in sode stories, video games, and other content, but I died laughing when you guessed it was her and then backed up on the thought.😂

No vampires in the Fate/stay night VN. They do exist, some even being Servants, but they’re mostly only relevant to Tsukihime which is an older series related to Fate. One of the female leads of Tsukihime, a girl by the name of Arcueid Brunestud happens to be one who ironically hunts other vampires. Arcueid is also the daughter of the vampire god that lives on the moon and is canonically one of the most powerful characters in Tsukihime, being able to match a Servant at a mere 30% power and is also a vessel for the Earth’s will. Why am I telling you this? Because Arcueid never appears in Fate outside of cameos and crossover events due to the timeline split and she deserves love too.

Rider doesn't recognize Shinji as her master, or seem to have any respect for him, which is why she denies her master being there. The anime doesn't make this clear, but he wasn't the one to summon her. Fate is based on a visual novel series, which has multiple paths and outcomes you can take. In one of them Rider has someone else as her master. Good job on guessing her true name, although the title helps. The original anime doesn't tell you who she is, but that is why she wears the blindfold. My guess is the chains are stand in for snakes.

There was a time when he wouldn't have cared who got hurt. He treated the people around him like tools. He deliberately screwed up Shirou's training by not activating his circuits and not telling him about the Toshaka, and he cheated on his wife. Kiritsugu was an asshole.

So, try to help explain Angry Matthew that was brought up. First it was a joking play on the servant named Angra Mainyu (or angry mango/matthew) who was summoned by the same family Illya comes from, the einsberns during the 3rd Holy Grail War. The Einsberns were basically trying to cheat and summon from a class not allowed known as the Avenger class, and expected Angra Mainyu to be powerful, plot twist, he wasn't and died immediately. So when his essence went to the grail due to how his legend works and his feelings he corrupted the grail. While the grail used to grant the wish exactly as wanted it now corrupts the wish, like a monkey paw. This is shown as Shirou's dad was in the last war and when the grail showed him what his wish would entail by saving the most people. The example the corrupted grail gave was if two boats were about to sink, one holding 50 children and another held 100 elderly, that he'd save the elderly and let the children drown, as saving the elderly was the greater number to save despite them having less time to live. Kiritsugu obviously didn't vibe with this, and realized the grail was evil. Also the marble joke is him referring to all the servants and masters from his war as marbles. Which is why he's upset he hurt the marbles.

One point to add is that the grail was never originally intended to grant wishes and the only times it ever has is when the broken system answered the 1st people to die in certain wars. No one has ever won a war and claimed a wish, but from the 2nd war onward, people who believed it would grant wishes were involved with it, so that belief might make it true. Otherwise, it's just a big bucket of power and information.

19:09 I hate to say this, but this is directed at people like you who watch this without knowing the source material and thus missing about 2/3 of all the hilarious jokes they make that relate to Fate/Stay Night (and how the story will develop), specific Servants or other Fate installments (chiefly the prequel to this: Fate/Zero [the a good chunk of the plot of which was summarized in the beginning of this episode with all the talk about marbles]). Apparently the creators of this abridged got called out on using to many in-jokes that require a good understanding of the Nasuverse and especially the characters in this and the lines following 19:09 were their response.
