I'm usually not on board with alternating timelines, but I was so on board with it for Ninth House. You didn't know what happened until the end, so I couldn't put the book down!

The Invisible Life is soooo well loved. There only one person on my goodreads who didn't love it. I'll definitely read it.

I hope you love it too! I've seen a few people who haven't, but that's subjectivity and books which is to be expected! So I hope you fall into the 'love it' category. :)

Anita Blake series is the best but I had to stop with book 18 or so when she had a zombie eat newborn babies that was a triggering traumatic read as a new mom at the time lots of horrible stuff starts happening in after that book

OOF YIKES, that'd be too much for me as well! I'm kind of glad I phased out of reading that series, it really got away from what I originally started it for.

I forgot Ninth House exists. lol I still need to read that one. Yeeeesssss. Seeing The City We Became on this list makes me so happy. I wasn't expecting it but it's so worthy of inclusion. I would also say it's more accessible than the Broken Earth trilogy, in terms of character voice and the way information is provided to the reader. I remember you talking about Gap Year in Ghost Town a while ago and put it on my tbr then. It's survived my recent tbr culls because I'm really interested in reading a fantasy set in Melbourne, even though I'm not sure I'll love the book. But I've been writing an urban fantasy set in Melbourne on and off for a few years, so if nothing else this book would be good for research. lol

It always makes me happy when I find other UF readers, I feel like the genre often gets talked down in the SFF community which I think is sad. James Masters is my all time favorite narrator. I just think he has a very distinguished voice for each of the characters and once I was listening to one of the short story collections (I think it was Brief Cases) where there are multiple narrators, and fair enough that the stories from women perspectives were narrated by a woman but Butters' perspective and it was narrated from a different dude and Harry was in the story and his voice was sooo strange. I wonder if you'd like the Hollows series by Kim Harrison. I still have to complete The City, We Became. I started it and think I got about 150 pages into it, and I enjoyed it, but got into a slump and put it down, and I sadly didn't pick it up. I will get back to it soon!

Yay, urban fantasy is awesome! 🙌🏻 I looked up Kim Harrison just now but it seems like the Hollows books are vampire-centric with sexy in the blurb. I’m after something reaaaally specific so I’m not sure they’d be my jam? I don’t know, though! Ah yeah, City is a very intense read. It requires a very specific attention span and mood, I think. I hope you continue to like it when you return to it!

@@becklebooks Huh! I just went and looked at the GR blurb and I laughed. I feel like it's a little misleading. It's more about witches and demons, and it's as vampire centric as Dresden is. Although I did read the first 2 books back in 2014 so I may have forgotten the first books.

I'll add it to my goodreads so I don't forget about it then! Maybe future me will give it a try. :)

Anita Blake was great until the theme became "in order to save the world I have to have sex with everybody"
