That's just a form of jukebox musical, there's dozens of shows and movies that do it. We Will Rock you for Queen, Bat Outta Hell for Meatloaf, Daddy Cool for Boney M, American Idiot for Green Day and so on. Like, there's so god damn many. Just look up the list on Wikipedia. If Mamma Mia impresses you so much, dive into the genre.

I really wish there were more movies that followed the same concept as Mamma Mia did. Take a singular artist and make a unique story that incorporates a bunch of their best songs. Most jukebox musicals are either biographies or pull from a bunch of different artists. Mamma Mia seems to really stand out among the rest.

Okay, context for the chaos gremlin: Amanda's character is Meryl's daughter and she's getting married. She wants her father to walk her down the aisle and she finds her mother's old journal, showing that there would be three possible candidates. She invites all three in the belief that she would 'just know' when meeting them who her father is. As anyone can guess, hi-jinks ensue. And the people around Meryl during 'Mamma Mia' are her 'Greek chorus'. 😄😄 So she technically can't see them in that instance. (Side note, the 'guy with a piano in his boat' is Benny Andersson!!)

Yeah I think what we learned from this is that we need to have a full movie reaction for the plot (also bc it was a crime not to include The Winner Takes It All lol) but seeing some of the reaction lacking context was both frustrating and hilarious xD Also I just love the fact they kept Benny and Björn to work on this and coach the actors though the songs, change some lyrics etc, it was the best thing they could have done to make it unique but still keep the iconic ABBA sound and quality. I'm obsessed with their little cameos in the movies too

The basic plot of the film is that Amanda plays Meryl’s daughter who is about to get married. In the lead up she finds her mom’s old diary and invites the three men from her mother’s past who could potentially be her father-that way she has her bases covered and, no matter which one her dad is, he’s at her wedding! The first song was the mother finding out that her three ex-boyfriends are in town, the second was the groom to be being whisked off for his bachelor party, the third was the big “let’s just have fun” song from the end of the film, and the third was the mom’s friends encouraging her to relax and have some fun-like she did when she was young

Ok so for the second one basically the two singing the song are engaged and the boy(Sky) is going to his bachelor party. Those guys are his close friends, but it is still so funny to me that they just emerge from the water. In the play this movie is based off of they were going scuba diving I believe

"Man, this is weird..." Unlike some musicals (where the song quickly gives away the context), you need to listen to some dialogue before entering some song or they don't make sense. As pointed out: "Mamma Mia!" is Meryl's character discovering her three most important exes are in her hotel, invited by her daughter to her wedding. She has a history with each one of them and reasons why she ended each relationship (even when she still has feelings for all, in different degrees). In "Lay all your love on me!" those guys are not a human trafficking gang XD. In the planned events for the wedding, it's mentioned that Amanda's boyfriend will be taken, by surprise, by his friends for his bachelor party; we just find that they surprised him during this number. That's why she doesn't panick, he will be back once the ceremony is over. "Waterloo" comes from the musical... exactly like that: it's the closing number performed by the entire cast as if it was an Abba show (partially reprising the concept that Meryl's character and her friends once were a band); no more context is needed XD. Definetly, if you want to make sense of the musical numbers, you need to watch the musical; it's built that way :P.

I have a lot to say: Firstly Matthew you too would be peering through windows if you saw 3 of your ex boyfriends (one of which is the father of her daughter) in your goat shed on a small Greek island the weekend your daughter is getting married. The guys with the flippers are his friend taking him to his bachelor party. The song ends with Sophie at her bachelorette party. Waterloo is just the cast having fun for the credits. The random guy at the piano is a member of abba. They all jump in and cheer at the end of dancing queen cause they were so happy they finally got it right.

you should listen to some songs from the 2014 into the woods, it’s not as good as the stage version but it’s easier to watch and has meryl streep belting some more and other familiar faces

Watching someone who has never watched the film will never be not funny to me! :P I probably watched it over a hundred times (mainly because of my severe Mamma Mia! hyperfixation when I was a child) and I'm still a massive fan.

Context for the first song: Not "their roof", HER roof. This is her resort they're in so they know that she's around even though she didn't know that they'd be there. And the part where she imagines them looking differently is her remembering what they looked like the last time she saw them, 20+ years ago.

Your confusion at 10:27 is so funny 😂😂 For context, the dude and Amanda are engaged, about to get married. The men who appear are his friends who take him away for the bachelor party, hence why she’s not freaking out and laughing at them (and why she’s suddenly surrounded by women at the end, it’s her bachelorette party)

Idk if anyones explained this yet but the semi invisible chorus members are a call back to greek plays cause its set in Greece. The chorus would usually be invisible to the characters. Their role is just to comment on what's going on in the scene.

The 2 old ladies are Meryll Streep’s character’s best friends since childhood and they did a singing band together. This is them reliving those times. They also made a second Mama Mia movie in which Lily James plays Meryll Streep when she was younger

The reason why it seems like they are singing live is because they did a full recording and then had inears that were hidden that they could sing along to and combined the audio from the live singing with the soundtrack so they weren't lipsyncing or anything. Made it fit based on where they were and how they worked with the sets!

I was in a production of Mamma Mia for my high school and it was the most fun I’ve had during a show!!! We could embrace every mistake because it felt like a part of the show and it was so fun! Our cast was incredible and that show has become very dear to my heart! To boil down what is happening in the songs kinda: Mamma Mia - The three guys are the potential fathers of Amanda’s character (Sophie). (Meryl is the mother) so when she sees them like that, that’s how she remembers them from when she knew them. She also doesn’t want to interact with them because she doesn’t actually know which of them is Sophie’s dad. And they didn’t know that Donna was sleeping with all of them. Lay All Your Love on Me - The guy (Skye) is Sophie’s fiancé. The guys that come in are part of Skye’s bachelor party/groomsmen. Waterloo - The end song. It is a performance from Donna and the Dynamos with Harry, Bill, and Sam to (presumably) Sofie, Skye, friends and the audience. Dancing Queen - Rosie, Tanya (the two friends) and Meryl (Donna) were all in a band called Donna and the Dynamos. Then Donna got pregnant and the band broke up. Tanya and Rosie are trying to get Donna to relive those days and loosen up a little. I think that’s all of them! You should watch the entire movie. It will make so much more sense!! 😂😂

You should listen to the rest of the songs, especially honey, honey, honey (will give you more context) and the winner takes it all (Meryl Streep embodied that performance) As always a great watch!

Here is some context, basically they took all of these famous ABBA songs and created an entire musical around it so that now all of the songs fit into the story and it's like any other musical where the songs are part of the story story they help guide the story along and tell a story so they change the lyrics or change the way things sounded slightly so that it fit with the Narrative of the movie and the plot so basically it goes from one song to another with a whole bunch of like scenes in between and the reason it's not like this big production like you said where it's just like people are singing it's because that's exactly what it is it's any other musical where people are just talking it's a regular movie scene and then they start singing Basically the same as any other musical you'd see and they've done it so that it's not the big production inside a booth it feels more like people are just breaking into song which makes it feel really rare and realistic. I highly recommend watching the movie, I absolutely love your out of context videos they're so hilarious, but I also love when you go back and watch the film or TV show afterwards and get context for what you watched because I always love to see if it changes the way you felt beforewhen you made the ad of context video or if you feel differently after seeing in context, either way I'd love to see your reaction to mamma Mia and maybe even mamma Mia too compared to your out of context reaction and see if you still feel the same way that you did when watching these songs or if you actually feel differently now that you know the context.
