In this video I hook into what I thought was a monster lake trout. Foul hooked fish fight like crazy, it was still a large fish but not near as big as I had thought. #fish #fishing #outdoors #trout #nature

Definitely from the fight. The blood vessels burst from the exertion along with being out of water. If it had energy to swim off it likely lived. You can prevent this from happening in the future by using heavier tackle.

I think foul hooking him had a bit to do with the length of this particular fight. I’ve had 40” lake trout fight less than this guy did at 34”.

Just checked out the video. Crazy battle. You shoulda cooked it over some driftwood shoreside!

It was snagged though, you gotta hide it

It can happen. Don’t feel guilty about it. Good video

Uh he fought the fish and it struggled until it bled. Nothing wrong with feeling guilty and doing something different the next time

Old trout can be really sensitive. It happens. I would’ve waded into the water a bit, held him ups right and “swim” him. Get fresh flowing water through those hills before letting him go. If he bellies up, you have dinner.

As far as I know he didn’t end up going belly up. I fished this spot for two days with a pretty decent wind blowing back to shore keeping an eye open for him and we never saw him.

Laying that fish on the rocks had a lot to do with what happened
@FirstManFishing4 ай бұрын
I agree he was up on the rock a bit more than he should have been. I’m not sure it’s what damaged it. The fight was like twice as long as it should have been since it was foul hooked and by the time we landed it it was exhausted. It didn’t flop on the rock or really even try to flop.

I’ll definitely keep the next one in the water a bit more. I’ve caught a ton of these big lakers and this is definitely my least favorite release.

Yeh, and shit happens nice fish, though. Haven't had a chance to get there all the laker lakes are on fire right now

“that’s a big fish to die” says a lot. This is why hunters and fishermen should only hunt for food, not for sport or trophies. If the animal is stressed or injured during the hunt then you’ve killed an innocent animal…so sad.

Why didn't you just eat him at that point? Was it a legal size issue or something?

I commented your respect for the fish but try not to remove them from the water, just a quick photo maybe and straight back but never take it out and lay it on the rocks as it will possibly double your mortality rate

Catch and release is playing with your food. Many if not most fish released die, at the very least it’s very stressful for them. Any fish wounded in the gills is dead for sure.
@aqca82Ай бұрын
That’s a lie in the uk there’s a whole industry for carp fishing, where fish are caught 20 years later at some points after they’ve been released
@jm98412 ай бұрын
Unfortunately catch and release is tricky. When they do follow up studies the survival rate is often pretty dismal. So bad it's not published. 😢 This of course is species dependent. But yeah unless you burn it something or things will use it.
