Michael, great video! My theater was very similar to yours, I also was rolling wide dispersion for my sides. I made the decision to do a major upgrade, which included buying all new JTRs (Qty 5 Noesis 212RT for L,C,R, RS, LS | Qty 2 Noesis 110HT-SL for both RS | and a Captivator 4000ULF-LP). Your video of Tony's theater sold me on JTR (You should get commission :) ) I remember Tony saying that he wished he had room for towers for his sides. As a result I knocked out large square holes and built large speaker pockets for my JTR 212RT as a part of my theater renovation along with extending my room 3 ft to make room for a new/large transparent screen and widening it by 6 ft. I removed most of my sheetrock and insulation and installed rockwool and use fabric for my walls. Also bought a new marantz, qty 2 monolith 7x200, JVC NX-7, and a miniDSP. During my first movie I watched I had the same reaction you did, the narrow dispersion of JTRs make for an incredible experience for object oriented sounds. I live in Texas so I can relate to your attic experiences. Your channel has been an invaluable resource to help me design and build my end game theater! Big thank you for all your hard work and content! God Bless!

I lived in Phoenix and had to do similar work in the attic. It was summer. We started at 6:00am and worked 3-4 hours a day. Took three days and before entering the attic we would guzzle a bottle of water at night and another first thing in the morning. We put on Tyvek suits, climbed the ladder and brought up tools and lights and completed the job. It’s rough working in those conditions. The temperature started at 90 degrees and soared to 160 degrees by noon. I won’t do that again.

@Youthman Жыл бұрын
Thank you Michael it was definitely a challenge, but totally worth the effort. As stated, in the video, I added additional two by fours in between the joists. On the rear of the speakers, there are four key holes. We used 4 large screws to go into the 2x4’s and joists. Then an L bracket to lock the speaker in place.

Thanks for another outstanding experience Youthman, I've enthusiastically subscribed and followed you for many many years. Your content is second to none IMHO. I have a similar dimensioned room to yours and JTR 212 LCR + 4000s. I also have the exact Klipsch surrounds + atmos speakers you just replaced driven by a Monolith 11x. I've been contemplating your upgrade for a while now. Do you think the 100 watts you're feeding the 10" JTR surround/atmos is adequate (rated up2 750 @ 8 ohms), or should I plan for more amplification long term?
@Youthman Жыл бұрын
Thank you kindly. I am completely satisfied with the 11X driving my entire system. It definitely helps that both JTR and Klipsch are high sensitivity speakers. Would my speakers benefit from having more power? Probably. Would I hear a difference in a blind A/B comparison. Maybe. Maybe not.

I'm watching this for the second time as I determine if I'm gonna get JTR speakers. One thing you said was about having wide dispersion rears. Is that really a Dolby Digital and DTS thing? Where'd you see that info? I thought it was just the original Dolby Surround and Pro Logic decoding that didn't want directional audio because both surround speakers shared a single channel. I think the idea for having 2 speakers is that you could mount them easier and higher up on your wall than with a single speaker in the middle of the back of your room with a long wire going to it. I've been looking into Dolby Pro Logic and Pro Logic II as of late for some testing vs Dolby Surround (Atmos version) upmixing. Dolby Digital has discrete surround channels and with Surround EX, an optional matrixes 6th. That's why I was wondering why your home theater was built the way it was for Dolby Digital. I wanna know where this information exists that I'm missing 👍

May I ask what the theory is with the rear surround placement? THey seem to be outside of the seating area and I'm unsure if this is a specific choice to try and achieve a specific axial relationship to the seating.

Simple reason is they had to be mounted higher than my door. Just a limitation of my room but fortunately the angle of the speakers is perfectly aligned to the front row. The rear seats will not get the benefit of the surround back speakers

Those JTR (or some of the Danley GO2 range) look like they'd be quite good in a home theatre. I don't think I'd crank it so balls to the wall that I'd exceed the capacity of 8" co-axials, and they are quite compact (though not HTIB level). Or if you live in a sound leaky apartment, binaural headphones and a Sub pac. I've always like the binaural effect. It is two channel headphones but with all the phase differences and EQ between channels that trick your brain into thinking the sound is some distance or direction away, instead of sounding right by your ears. I haven't heard any films with binaural recording though. The only thing the headphones miss is the feeling of bass on the body, which is what the tactile transducers are for.

what an amazing move for you Micheal! I love using togglers to install things into sheetrock situations... they are very sturdy and easy to use. Congrats on the progression! next up trinnov??

Thank you, kindly Eric. I don’t have any plans to move to a Trinnov anytime soon I have the Anthem AVM70 in for review.

@@YouthmanI hope you get a good ARC calibration. Less is more with ARC IMO.
@Youthman Жыл бұрын
Appreciate the tip. I just hope it does better with base management than it did back when I reviewed the MRX 1120 it sucked the life out of the bottom end I even sent the file to anthem to tweak. It was better but still was very anemic.

@@Youthman The difference this time will be built-in time and phase alignment. The Room Gain is mid-bass 150-300 Hz. Deep Bass filter can be centered from 20-80Hz. These are filters similar to miniDSP. Tilt can be adjusted for brightness. I stop filtering at the last peak/null beyond 3-4 db for each channel which for my room and speakers provides a more accurate sound reproduction. ARC does require a bit of adjustment to get to your destination, but all race engines must be tuned.

Sounds like they have made some nice improvements to ARC since my experience several years ago

Are you running 4 or 6 atmos speakers?
@Youthman Жыл бұрын
Four. As shown in the video, I moved the front two height speakers forward about a foot. I left the front in-ceiling speakers installed but not connected. It’s not worth the expense of hiring a drywall guy and repainting.

@@Youthman are you happy with 4 in your room? Or are you planning for 6?
@Youthman Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. My room isn’t big enough for six my room is 13 foot wide by 19 foot deep with 10 foot ceiling. My front cabinet is 4 feet deep so effectively I only have 13’ x 9’ of space to work with.

Hey youthman ... It's not directly related to this video, but I suspect one of my ears is getting damaged with huge bass from my 18" subs. May I ask what kind of ear protections you use please ......
@Youthman Жыл бұрын
In all honesty, the best protection is the volume knob. I typically listen at -10 to -15dB. To me, Reference volume is too loud. Only time I wear ear plugs is when I do Home Theater Tours in Kansas City. Those guys like it stupid loud. 😉 please take care of your hearing, you only get them once.

Awesome setup! Did you leave all your ceiling speakers installed or just the front 2? I was just curious with my install if I could maybe just install a sideways beam into other beams and mount the speaker over top of the hole vs patching all of the 9" big holes. Also curious if you had a chance to hear the Captivator 2400's and how they compare to the RS2's because I'm not sure I have space for RS2's. Thanks!
@Youthman Жыл бұрын
Yes, that’s exactly what I did. We ended up moving the front speakers forward about a foot. Rather than hiring someone to patch drywall and repaint, I left those two speakers there. For the rear speakers, I could not move them any further back due to an air duct vent so we mounted the new speakers over the 8 inch hole.

Great video. I’d love to hear those speakers. I agree with you comment to enjoy the journey. My atmos speakers are some small bookshelf speakers I had kicking around. They don’t match the rest of my system but allowed me to set up a 7.1.4 system in my dedicated theater with very little cost. At some point I want to upgrade them but that’s down the road a long ways.
