I'm white. In the 70s I was in my 20s my closest friend was a black man and his wife who were around 40. Actually that whole family and our family got to be family. My friend Sonny taught me how to BBQ meat. Showed me how to make great sauce. and after a while of me working on my sauce, we had contests. Sonny's boys taught mine how to ride a bike. Their boys were several years older than ours, their two oldest were teens, my oldest was an infant when we met. My second came about 4 years down the line. I named him after my best friend and his wife. Sonny's real name was Alexander. Audrey was his wife. Her middle name was Lee so it worked for a middle name for my boy. We did things together from one end of the calendar to the other. We live in Michigan so, even tho I do BBQ outside year round, eating outside is a bit of a problem in a foot of snow. But starting Memorial Day and going through Labor Day we cooked together every Summer holiday and every special event. I would bring my grill to Sonny's and we would cook for 2 days sometimes. We'd drag a TV outside will we cooked and watch whatever sport was in season at the time, baseball then football. We had fun ribbing each other as, except for basketball, we each liked opposing teams. Sonny was a fan of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions, me being a displaced Chicago boy was an avid fan of the White Sox and Chicago Bears. It also became a tradition that i would bring and grill 5 to 10 pounds of hot Italian Sausage for Sonny and I to snack while cooking and watching the game and any friend who might stop by, washed down with a little beer. Our ladies and Sonny's mother in law cooked all the sides inside. Our biggest weekend was Labor Day. We cooked enough for the neighborhood it seemed. At least a lot of friend stopped by to grab a plate. I remember our last BBQ was Labor Day of 1980, I was offered a new job with a substantial raise in another city. But that last Labor Day, we borrowed grills. We had 7 grills going, we cooked 11 whole slabs of ribs, 8 chickens, dogs, and burgers. It was a great day. He and his wife have left this world 20 or 30 years ago now. I miss them. I miss Sonny more than a brother. We fished together, we got in trouble with our wives together, we gardened. Great times.

Asia...thx for this. It brought back some great memories. I'm handicap and in a wheelchair. One day last summer, I was down on the beach at Lake Michigan. I'm sitting under a shade tree on my beach blanket, my wheelchair next to me and my cooler on the other side of me. All of the sudden a large African American family came down and set up a large table next to me. It was obviously some type of family get together. They were cooking, playing games, dancing to music, etc. All of the sudden, one of the Auntie's brought over a HUGE plate of food and said, "Here you go, baby. U need to eat." I must have had tears in my eyes when I looked at her cuz she said, "It's OK baby. We got plenty of food and this is our way of showing u that we love u." That moment meant more to me than u will ever know. I will never forget it. Thx for the review...very funny!

A few years ago I was driving back to Tennessee from Mississippi. Anyhow, While driving back I stopped in Laurel, Mississippi on Beacon Street near the projects where I was the only White dude for a few miles to fuel up. A black fellow saw my license plate and said Hey, You from Tennessee? I said, Yes. He said, Come across the street where were having a Bar-B-Que and we will fix you up some food for the road. After he introduced to some folks and walked me back to my car I had 2 grocery bags full of food. He shook my hand and wish me a safe trip back home. I actually did go to my first all black cookout! lol My friend Khadija invited me to her brother’s birthday and pool party. First of all, I’m not just white, I’m Irish white - so white that I’m almost pale blue. Secondly, I have the most Catholic name on the planet - Mary Therese. After half an hour of meeting the brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles and friends and being told “Dang girl! How’d you get so white!!!” And then being asked over and over what my name was, they all gave up trying to say it and just called me white girl for the rest of the night. lol They loved the fact I didn’t know the music, couldn’t dance to it, didn’t know the games. I ate like a fool, and I sang happy birthday as loudly as I could because that’s the only song I knew. Hahaha. That was 12 years ago, and I’ve been to every one of King’s birthdays since. They all mostly know my name now, but I’m still “White Girl” because it’s funny. 🙂

I thought some might not like a black girl bringing a white guy but most everyone knew my family and were very very nice. Especially when her grandfather remembered my father was the first white man asked to judge at the historic all black Ames Rodeo in the early 70's. It was just like being at my family's 4th of July bbq.

Everyone was having such a great time and honestly I never realized that Lani was black until I went to her barbeque that day!! Seriously I never really saw her as black! I guess I am color blind. I was an 18 year old black kid from New Orleans who just happened to be smart enough to get a scholarship to go to college(USM in Hattiesburg) I was wary at first and there were a few negative people that I had to deal with. They were far outnumbered by the good people I met during that time. I still have a close friend(more like a brother) who I still talk to and we will visit any time there is a chance to. His daughter just made 22 and is on track to graduate from college next semester. He still took her shopping with him though and she was still in charge of the pecan pie. I tell you our entire staff was absolutely heartbroken the week he came in without her. She fell and a week later she was gone. Every last person who knew her was gutted. Dominos and dice BOTH used to be made out of animal bone, hence BONES. 'Mamma T's Fish Fry' is the sequel to this. 'Tail of the Opossum' is my favorite.

Yes, And a domino, apparently, is a rectangular tile of a roll of two dice; So, if you're "throwing bones", then you're playing either dominoes or dice, or perhaps both simultaneously; But, if you're "rolling bones", then you're playing dice [i.e., rolling/"casting" dice individually]: At least, this is what I happen to have inferred from my research thereon up to this particular juncture of space and time within the universally-recognized space-time continuum. To be honest, I don't get around much anymore. 😊😊😊

I'm watching BJ's face through all this and you KNOW that he's seeing just what Zach's friend's cousins were playing at with the spades game and dice. I know BJ was thinking 'you're walking into EVERY ONE of these traps, Zach!'.

Growing up in Arkansas I went to them all the time. It was a natural event for us. My first one I was 8 years old. That was my extended family and friends my whole life.

Yeah all my friends from 11 to 20 until I moved were all black. But Nick James was my closest friend. I would sleep over his house during the summers at least four or five days a week. We literally lived next door to each other so not a big deal. Mama James is one of the greatest women that I have met to this very day and it's 16 years later at this point. She allowed us to do whatever we wanted to do within reason. If we wanted to go sneak out and ride bikes at 3:00 a.m. then we were allowed. If we wanted to sneak out and go over to some girls house at 1:00 a.m. then we are allowed to. The rule was that we better be back in that house by the time she gets up for work which was about 6:30 a.m. She for some reason rarely ever slept in her room. No matter if she had to work at 7:30 and no matter how late we came back into the house She always woke up and she always cooked us food. Oh and I don't mean this as a cliche thing I mean this as like in all seriousness without question This woman cooked the best fried chicken wings that I've ever had to dis a very day. But We f***** up one time and pushed our luck and walked back into the house right around quarter to 7:00 and the sweetest woman in the world put us in our place and rightfully so. She whooped both our asses. She smacked the s*** out of both of us quite a few times because she was terrified that something happened to us. But guess what she did right afterwards?? She made us the best damn breakfast that I've ever had in my life. Bacon homemade hash browns corned beef hash blueberry pancakes and waffles And then looked at us and said "I love you boys" and went to work And of course as always we replied "We love you too Mama James". I wasn't her son and at this point she had only known me for probably 6 months. She treated me like her son. When she brought home a brand new pair of Jordans for Nick I had a pair also. When she brought home a new pair of Air Force ones, I had a pair also. Unfortunately once I moved to a different city I wasn't able to see Nick or his mom to the degree in which I was used to for 9 years. But we are still great friends to this very day. Oh and though I haven't mentioned her I have my own mom and she's one of the best moms in the world I love her to death. But Mama James is like a mother/grandmother figure to me. MaMa James turned 60, 5 years ago. So to pay her back for all that she did for me as a child and Nick and I put our money together and sent her on a 6 months cruise around the world. Yes guys there are cruises that are 6 months long But of course they usually range between $40,000 $60,000. We had this planned for years so it wasn't an issue putting the money together. Of course she broke down and crying because she's never been anywhere in her life outside of the state. Then in Mama James fashion She smacked the hell out of us for spending that much money on her. God I love that woman. Nick was my best man at my wedding and still to this day is like a brother to me. I can say without question that 40 years from now will still be in each other's lives. The rest of her family and Nick's family live in Maryland and have only come down a handful of times throughout my life but when they did they were just as amazing as she was. The first time meeting them was the moment I knew that she loved me like she loves her own child. Because though I had never met them or heard or knew much about them they knew everything about me. She bragged to them as much as about me as she did her own kid. I already love that woman but that was the moment where it's solidified it forever. In this video made me think of her and made me think of Nick and I'm grateful for that. God bless everybody I love everybody and learn to be more open-minded guys. Judge those by the constant of their character and not what they look like what their religion is or what their sex or sexual preferences. If we can all work on that then the world will become a much better place.

I have NOT been to a black cookout, but I would go in half a heart beat. I have been to a black Christmas gathering, and the food was DAMN. Not ever going to put anyone's culture down. People are people, and you take them for who they are, you won't be disappointed most of the time.

LOL, as a white guy from the South, I've had my own "Zach" experience and it's almost as funny in real life to live it as it is to watch him talk about it. You just roll with it, go along for the ride and meet great people all at the same time.

Dominoes and dice are both called bones because of the traditional bone material from which they were made way back in history.
