@@extremetrollface The cops do stop and help deter crime. You cant have proactive police officers when the city wont allow it. The issue is the law makers, the district attorneys, the judges etc. Cops enforce the laws that are written. Once a person gets a citation or goes to jail the cop has no say if the charges will get dropped or how long an offender will stay in jail. Cops do an incredible amount of work, then the district attorneys office gets the case and either drop the charges or offer ridiculous plea deals and keep offenders in the community.

As the Society of Professional Journalists code of ethics states, "Journalists must recognize that legal access to information differs from an ethical justification to publish or broadcast." Just because Tyler and Mr Choe have legal access to filming public homeless encampments, that does not mean there is an ethical justification. Especially with all the concerns of consent and publishing faces of active addicts I just got to the part of the man being arrested. To publish a video of someone getting arrested like this- at their lowest, under mental and physical distress, possibly suffering from mental issues or trauma... it's a complete violation of the SPJ code of ethics. It's an invasion of privacy; it does nothing to help public safety and creates a mess online where the person can never request this footage be taken down. This is truly truly reprehensible to me as a journalist.

People usually get mad when people "pretend" to be good for content when in reality they are spreading disinformation on purpose to create drama and push a narrative. This video is filled with shock content to invoke an emotional response and judging by this comment section it's working. While I don't know much about this Tyler fella, the "journalist" he's with works for Turning Point USA which should tell (intelligent people) about the story this video is trying to tell. The narrative is obvious and I would like to believe that Tyler knows exactly what he's doing and it's extremely selfish. I apparently can't expect the general population to have any common sense anymore. And remember folks, making fun of people who are at their lowest makes you the bad guy. Be better. --I would also like to add that they DEFINETLY planted the bat. If I were these people's parents I would be extremely disappointed... Its interesting to not just see the situation in the video, but also the reactions in comments. It really shows how diverse are people's views. Is this video political? True? Professional? I dont think we have enough information to determine that. But what I think is an issue, is how people try to see the cause of this problem and try to solve it. Maybe the cause are those that benefit from it, but even that is complicated. I wonder how it will get resolved.

Now you add in the economic issues, broken families, disconnected society, and a narrative about the government and police becoming militaristic and reducing freedoms... well that's how you end up in this situation. I was homeless at one point in my life, and I have to agree with some of the people that say that the missions are dirty and unsafe. That was my experience as well. I ended camping out by a railroad track where there wasn't any homeless around. Eventually I got a job, saved up my money & moved on. During that time I rented some space at a storage unit, so all of my stuff was somewhere more secure. Took my showers at a gym, and on my days off I avoided any location where the homeless would hang out. There is a category of homeless people that maintain a cleaner appearance & actually blend into society rather well. Unless you spotted them leaving their camp, you probably never guessed..

@krystopher3755 I don't exactly know what to share. I wasn't on drugs, so I didn't have an addiction story & like I mentioned I avoided the homeless for the most part. Although my time at the shelter meant that some of them knew me. What I'll say is pay attention to some of the people that you notice that are regulars are Starbucks, Whole Foods or any location with wifi that someone can stay for a long period of time as long as they're a customer. There might be a "high class" homeless person there. I became homeless because I was lazy, lost my job & was too lazy to look for another job. I was more interested in playing video games or just not being responsible at all. Eventually I was forced to be responsible. I'll admit that I even bought a laptop while homeless just so I could play some video games on my days off while homeless. Some people just assumed I was working on my laptop, but if you looked at my screen (and I didn't alt tab out of the game) you'd see the truth.

Definitely. Everyone has their reasons. The irony You'd be hard pressed to find a homeless person who is not pro socialism/communism, which historically has been nothing but systematic oppression all over the world. That's probably because there is only up from down. Poor people also dont sympathize for people who worked hard for their wealth. Many are also on drugs and not thinking right and contradict themselves constantly. It's amazing how "right wing" has become a negative thing in their world. Ie.. God, capitalism, freedom, free speech, secure borders, ect. Also, black people are systematically being conditioned to believe everything negative that happens to them is because they are black. They blame everything on a white system. They don't lock black people up longer. They lock repeat offenders up longer and poor people who can't get a decent lawyer. The police don't risk their lives for you because your black. It's because you're homeless and on drugs and don't even value your own life. The system isn't racist. It's classist

Instead, these two losers think harassing, filming, and shaming unhoused people is the solution. The DENSITY. Live television doesn't show this side to the public, I live near this city and you dont see news reporters walking the streets and interviewing addicts. It's important to understand the problem, why it's happening, and the people involved to learn how to solve it. Instead of hating, how about you show support?

@@cap_les7663 invading people's personal spaces, recording them in their worst times (who may not have the capacity to understand what is happening), putting words into their mouths, posting it on the internet completely showing their face, and then pointing fingers at the left is not a very effective way to "spread awareness" if the end goal is to help people. What if the people shown in this video get clean and want to find a job? There's a video of them watched by millions of people showing them struggling with homelessness and drugs, millions of people who could be potential interviewers. I hope you remember that stigmas against mental health, drug use, and homelessness are alive and thriving (which videos like these continue to perpetuate). This is not spreading awareness. This is choe and tyler exploiting people who are struggling (and possibly dying!) to make money, blame individuals for systemic problems, and enrage people to fight against social programs that could potentially help everyone; the making of pure right wing propaganda. As an exercise: just think, would you want someone blasting your biggest mistakes and "failures" to the whole world just to rile people against you and potentially harm your goals and future? I don't think so. So why can they do this for the people struggling in this video? Oh yea because they use the stigmas against them and view them as subhuman who don't deserve respect and empathy. So no, I won't support these losers.

He literally said the housing isn’t enough.. because it isn’t… addiction is a mental illness.. give a depressed person some material stuff, they’ll still be depressed.. he made good points, there’s no community, no genuine care, and they feel that. Yeah he can detox, then get housing, but he’ll still struggle with mental health, which could lead him to fall back on drugs. Community includes help, therapy, love… they need real human care to heal mentally and emotionally.. these people are no doubt traumatized, a house won’t fix that. Of course they’re gonna fall back on getting high. Yes they need housing, but they also *need* community.. acknowledging that homeless people need community IS empathy.

Comments here are super interesting. One point I find contentious is the assertion that filming those experiencing drug addiction or homelessness is “exploitative” and “dehumanizing”. I’d actually argue that providing a face, name, and platform to these people is actually incredibly humanizing. We know these people’s names and are able to emotionally connect with them; I’ve seen multiple people in the comments talk about Devon and commend his character. The journalist is presenting a reality, a disturbing and uncomfortable reality, yes, but I believe it is up to the viewer to find humanity in those who are shown. I even believe that the journalist makes it especially easy to relate to all of the people he interviews, with their first names, faces, and stories being included. The inclusion of the phrase spoken by “you all are just one missed paycheck away from being out here too” is EXTREMELY poignant and I believe sets the whole tone for the whole video. You are not watching some abstract, detached, idea of a homeless person, you are rather watching yourself, if you fell on some bad luck and the government failed you. So, I disagree with the video being at all “dehumanizing”. We have to remember that dehumanization is two fold, we as humans should be able to find humanity in any representation of a person. However, I can see where it could be “exploitative”. These people’s full faces (and sometimes even names) are shown. The journalist has the good sense to blur the face of the woman who has just escaped being trafficked because he heard her share her story and recognized that it would be dangerous for her to be publicly presented, but you can only imagine that there where others filmed who were in similar situations, where an online presence or association with the subject matter could harm them. It’s a hard topic though. On one hand, blurring faces is more ethical, but it contributes to dehumanization of the subject, as faces are incredibly important for connection. I guarantee that we would not feel as connected to Devon if his face or name were not included. Half of the humanization of a subject is up to the viewer, yes, but the journalist has an ethical obligation to make that task as easy as possible. But I believe that this kind of journalism is necessary to expose comfortable, ignorant humans to the uncomfortable reality of other humans in order to inspire compassion and reform. But, do these few people shown in horrible situations deserve to be vehicles to inspire change at the cost of their anonymity and possible safety? I don’t know. This all being said, I’m not the biggest fan of Mr. Choe, I don’t know if he ever claimed to be a journalist but he seems much more like a political activist pushing an agenda than someone interested in sharing nonpartisan, simple truths. He has his biases and regularly reminds the audience of them (not very journalistic). I personally have a hard time taking anyone seriously who uses the phase “soyboy” without a heavy dose of irony. At least Mr. Anthony and the woman who Tyler accompanied were open about being activists and had no pretenses of journalism. But I do feel like I have to mention how abhorrent it is to use people in a vulnerable situation to fight your protest for you. I assume that in that situation, the homeless people who were moved into the parks by the protesters (who got to go home to their cozy houses) got extra harassed by police and plenty of other unpleasantness, all because they were promised basic aid. Crazy thing to admit on camera. This is definitely an ethical failure on behalf of the protestors, and a systemic failure on behalf of the city, if these people wanted aid but had to resort to a quid pro quo situation instead of getting free services from the city (who are literally supposed to do that, that’s what our taxes are for). Back to Choe, I feel like I do have to say that I respect how he has formed relationships with some people on the street (if what he implies and shows is true), which indicates that he is connected to the issues at hand, rather than commenting on them from a disconnected distance, which is a lot more than most politicians, journalists, and activists of any political ideology can say. Anyways essay over sorry for pretentious language it’s the only way I know how to write. And sorry it’s so long, the vid rly got me thinkn, which I suppose means it did its job!

@@Notfunnysam Yeah cause dying of a drug overdose cause a crowd of over-active cop haters won't clear the scene for paramedics to check you out shows so much fault with the police. You ever consider that half the shit you protest against you directly cause? Like did you know its an actual measured, observed phenomenon that the more you protest against something the more strongly it becomes rooted and the more prevalent it becomes. And in this scenario, the people who killed George Floyd and sparked all this bullshit were (in the order of blame): George Floyd His drug dealer who sold him a fentanyl laced speedball And the crowd of cop-haters who decided before anything had happened that the police were racist and they needed to protect the poor black man (cause you know, black people are incapable of protecting themselves so white people like you have to do it for them, right?) They chose to do this by forming a tight perimeter, aggressively screaming at and arguing with officers preventing them from clearing the scene. The lack of cleared and safe scene is literally the reason that the paramedics nearby testified as to why they did not move in when Chauvin called in to request medical attention for Floyd. So yeah, everything this video references, everything that sparked the initial events and the protests is all based off bullshit that none of y'all ever educated yourselves on. And tragically if y'all had been able to control your fucking emotions when Floyd was on the ground and give them some space that the paramedics probably woulda saved his life or done a helluva job trying.

False. Actually people in this country who have never and will never call for the police. Like me, ambulance sure, fire fighters sure. Cops NEVER, I didn't even call the cops when my house was burglarized. We didn't call the cops when my friends little brother and I were Robbed in their mothers front yard by two random blk dudes with guns, after they went through our pockets my friend lil bro got scared and just tried running away, that's when one of them upper his gun and shot him twice in the back with a .45, STILL ain't call the cops!!! So speak for your mf self. And by the way, the cops obviously ended up getting involved because you know? Shot spotter? And someone showing up at a hospital 25-39 minutes later at the nearest hospital with two gun shot wounds to the back, yeah, cops look into those kinds of things on their own. Long story short! The shooter WHO WAS ALREADY A FELON received a 7 year sentence and only had to serve 4 years. And the other guy who robbed us, but didn't pull the trigger ended up serving 4 years of a 4 years sentence. Please, tell me, what kind of MFn "justice" is that.!? 4 years for robbing someone and shooting one of the victims TWICE, I'm the BACK while they were running away! AND dude was already a felon. I'm no felon, but I bet if I was and I ran up into some black families front yard with my buddy and pulled guns on them, robbed them, shot one twice in the back, My "white privilege" WOULD HAVE GOTTEN ME WAY MORE THAN A 4 YEAR SENTENCE!!. And I'm not even a felon, the shooter was, he should have done more than 4 years just for possessing the firearms..!!! But, that's what you get when the police/ system would rather lock up mid level drug dealers than keep violent criminals in prison, (only said that because word got out that apparently he snitched on some people for a deal, snitched on some folks who had absolutely NOTHING to do with our situation) Anyway, sorry for the rant. But yeah, believe it or not, some people won't call the POLICE, EVER, some people are actually scared of them, I am. And I have a Uncle who is in law enforcement down in Atlanta Georgia, he joined the military when he was 18 then became a Military police, then became a cop/sheriff in Atlanta, then became a US Marshall, retired from the Marshalls and still works with them only now he's in a different branch of L.E. he's ABOVE a regular US Marshal but in his older age he's no longer kicking down doors and physically arresting criminals, now he's in tech side of things like cellphones, phone calls, internet, computers etc... also my Aunt is in law enforcement, she was also a US Marshall, I forget what her label is now but she's actually gone out of the country to assist arrest, something my uncle never did. Anyway, they've both told our family crazy stories about their jobs, Im talking stuff I haven't even seen in the movies.. my uncle also told our family that he, who's been in L.E. his entire life said! "I WOULDN'T TRUST A COP THAT I DON'T KNOW ANY MORE THAN I WOULD TRUST A RANDOM MCDONALD'S DRIVE THRU EMPLOYEE." Also saying, they're NOT you're friends, they aren't here to be your buddies... Soooo with that said, I'll take their Judgment call/ advice more than some random KZbin commenter , , , who prob doesn't have much experience doing anything than licking boots and making comments on KZbin while living vicariously through a screen..!!! You do you, and we'll do us. Just, maybe don't try speaking for people you don't know next time???

@@mustang8206 While I was rotating through the ER, the doctors/nurses/physician assistants/NPs/front desk all fucking hated them because they're just a burden on resources and causes people have to work overtime and work extra for people who just want to die on the street. Sorry someone who keeps coming in and shitting all over themselves and pissing on themselves because they're high on something makes all staff angry. There is no helping them because staff have seen them dozens of times and gave them help but they don't actually want to improve their situation and just use it as a opportunity to get free food, free place to stay, and stay out of the colder times of the year. The only people the doctors/etc cared about were the one's who were actively trying to get better but relapsing. One of the doctors casually told me he wouldn't care if some of those people just died cause they're just wasting their time and all the other providers in the dictation room agreed with him pretty candidly. Now they would be super professional in front of druggys faces but behind the scenes docs are hyper critical. Just from what I've witnessed at a large ER while being a student provider.

I mean if you watched the whole vid, idk if police are equipped to help drug users. All the crime is connected to desperation of living situations. Like the lady they showed with kids, 3 jobs, and still homeless. She didn't take drugs and that was suprising. It's hard to not do drugs when your reality is bleak and has no "light at the end of the tunnel" Another guy mentioned as well and backed by stats, that you're closer to a homeless persons in terms of wealth than you are to being an upper class even as an average citizen. I think compassion is needed and proper mental health and medical support. How is incarcerating a vulnerable population helping them? Esp if statistics report high recidivism and relapse after prison. I believe a more mental health and educational support can go a long way. And police are not equipped nor trained to handle that situation nor should they. Most likely can with support of massive amounts of social workers, and mental health professionals. But as a nation (USA) we need to understand that punitive measures do very little against crime.
