Similar situation happened to my family. One family member accused the other of assault. It turned out to be a false allegation that was just made up in the heat of an argument. Court looked into it and everything. Even though we're family we took it dead serious. We were asking everyone in that house what happened. Didn't matter that we were related. What mattered to us was if someone got hurt. So this lady using the excuse that "because it's my brother I didn't ask" is bullshit. Even if it were someone closer in my family like my own siblings I'd demand an explanation. It might hurt to hear someone you love did something unforgivable but it's important you stick to your morals.

And I can't tell you how many times I've heard the same exact excuses from multiple different predators, that the last guy used all in one short conversation: "She (a CHILD) was flirting with me! The problem is that most of them fail to rehabilitate. There has only been one program that has ever seen a more than 50% success rate, and that is the witnesses' protections program. A program not even about rehabilitating. Most programs get shut down due to a lack of positive results.

I think this also shows how ineffective the American (and most) justice systems are with regards to sentencing. Having spent 20 to 25 years in jail, the one guy still didn't show remorse for his victim. Its why offenders need to be re-educated (in this instance on the traumatic impacts of their actions on thier victims) and rehabilitated to learn to avoid scenarios and environments where they could be tempted to take advantage of a child again. Otherwise, you're just releasing a sex offender back into society with nothing stopping them from committing another sex offence.

I feel bad for anyone who accidentally got caught up in the Limewire ordeal. I used that back in the day when I WAS a kid and it was SO easy to accidentally download those files. I would try to download music videos or movies and it would take days on a dial up network just for it to be some kind of weird shit or just not at all what it was supposed to be.

As much as I know these guys are totally downplaying their crimes, I do remember how full of CP limewire was and how it seemed to be a challenge/troll for people to disguise the images with innocent sounding titles pretending it was the song of the moment etc. I was paranoid for years that the police were going to come knocking on my door cause I accidentally downloaded something even though I deleted it all immediately, so it’s interesting to hear that being said.

Yeah forsure, I as a nosy kid in the early 2000's internet have stumbled upon and even downloaded cp accidentally (there even used to be these troll/intentionally hidden movies which started out like the normal movie and 10mins in cut off in to blatant cp) and I remember being shocked and scared that I would be sent to prison, probably even made a red flag on some investigation and was followed, then they realised I wasn't even a teenager and never got charged or even approached by authorities. Now if I had "accidentally" downloaded many of these files for sure they've gotten me.

But I found out BOTH my neighbors, both the one next to me and across the street were on the registry. I was mind blown. I honestly agree with allowing these people to exist in a secluded community, but maybe not within any proximity to children. It’s a fucking tough situation because so much relies on internet and cellular Infrastructure but access to that may give them pathways to access sex abuse material and controlling that is difficult. I know that many of them regret it and a small number of them might be in this situation unreasonably (I know they all make excuses and stories but it’s still something that COULD happen regardless) but I believe in reform over permanent punishment and maybe the solution isn’t to lock the door and throw away the key.
