I've never really understood the saying 'Don't judge a book by its cover.' That's literally what cover designs are for.
@talkofthestage60533 жыл бұрын
The saying was coined or at least is best attributed to Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights Movement when black people were fighting racial segregation and discrimination in the US. Dr King’s plea to the racist white folk was to judge a person by the content of their character and not to judge a book by its cover (I.e. not judge a person by their skin colour). I don’t think this saying was ever seriously intended to apply to actual books in the way that Jack has in this light-hearted and comedic video.
@FM95.53 жыл бұрын
It's a tricky saying for sure... A lot of books have varying covers too 🤷♂️
@sin33583 жыл бұрын
The description is more important ofc but the cover has a huge influence in whether or not you'll even pay attention to a book. So far, there are two reasons why I wanted to read a book: 1. It was recommended to me 2. The cover was whispering to me

Have you tried listening to audiobooks and reading something you really wanted to try for a while at the same time? I feel like when my attention wanders about, listening to the audiobook while also reading the book myself kinda helps. It helps to set up an ambiance that is less likely to make one want to watch/listen to something else. You can also try breaking the slump by rereading something you've really enjoyed in the past or reading somewhere with no access to the internet :D

"This is How you Lose The Time War" definitely has a really great second act, but for me I also enjoyed the first half! The letters were witty and some of the settings were so cool, like an ancient bone temple, a dying plant, and an abandoned hospital in the middle of the woods. If you are a fan of sci-fi I think these settings make the first half more appealing! It also contains cute pop-culture references. This book made me laugh and cry, I highly recommend especially if you enjoy time travel/romance/poetry! My favorite quote from the book: "Flowers grow far away on a planet they'll call Cephalus, and these flowers bloom once a century, when the living star and its black-hole binary enter conjunction. I want to fix you a bouquet of them, gathered across eight hundred thousand years, so you can draw our whole engagement in a single breath, all the ages we've shaped together."

I actually liked that this is how you lose the time war was sort of slow! I feel like a lot of sci fi/fantasy is very fast paced and more about plot than characters, and because I read a lot of sff I think I sort of end up feeling like the destination is more important than the journey- I’m reading to finish the book, rather than to enjoy the process of reading. So this is how you lose the time war forced me to sort of slow down and focus on the character development, the writing, the little changes between chapters, rather than whatever major plot events happened.I was able to enjoy reading the book, rather than just “yay, the mystery is solved!” And I am SO excited to reread

when you said you already had the best content ready for 2022, you really weren’t lying.

The way Jack explained the book cover of "topic of conversion" is exactly the way my literature teacher explains the line " she was having a pretty normal day" for 1hour😆😆

I love your insight into the meaning behind the cover art! I would totally watch a video of you going to an art museum and just talking about the juxtaposition and color and meaning behind the placement of the figures in the painting

Jack, i have to confess my name used to be “Jack Edwards Superfan”. But since starting school again, many awkward conversations came up about my e-mails name. Thus I have changed my name. I hope that you can forgive me. Much love - your superfan

I’m getting out of a reading slump in 2022 and it’s inspired by you! Saw your last vid where you said you wanted to read more non-fic this year… my two FAVOURITES are “Invisible Women” and “What We Don’t Talk About When We Talk About Fat.”

Dude I found "This is how you lose the time war" through you (in your 2021 recap) and so I knew it would pay off, and man did it. Just read it in about three days (I've nothing better to do) and as soon as it picks up about halfway, it just goes hard as fuck. Still barely comprehensible, but it ties everything together so well until the end. Such brilliant writing. It's funny how I actually highlighted the same letter, though a different passage of it: "It is difficult - it is very difficult, to befriend where you wish to consume, to find those who, when they ask "Do I have you still," when they end a letter with "Yours," mean it in any substantive way." Truly, mind-numbingly brilliant writing. And eh, the cover is BEAUTIFUL.
