Great demo Bea! I am a HUGE Homme fan. I chased his tone for ages. Once even got my hands on an old Ampeg VT22, but it needed more TLC than I could afford, and was waaaay to loud and heavy. I settled on a Catalinbread SFT MkII. I boost it with a mid humped EQ & a Bad Monkey set to clean boost and viola! First 3 QOTSA albums all day thru a clean amp, and having two boosts makes the pedal act like a three channel amp. I have an Agile LP setup for standard C, and I am now a happy fanboy: ) Cheers!

The pdf 1 didn’t have a gain or volume control, which is the version josh homme uses. The pdf-2 is the pdf 1 with the clean dirty foot switch and gain knob. The pdf-1x is the pdf-1 and pdf-2 combined just with the gain changed for vol, so with the stock gain setting it will give you Qotsa! Because it’s pdf -1 with pdf 2 features 👍🏻

What a straight forward and honest pedal review. I also really appreciate that you spend actual time (15-30 minutes) with the thing for us to see the evolution. Too many times pedal review videos are ~5 minutes and half of that is the intro logo, the outro, and some b roll of the packaging. I've never heard of Stone Deaf before, but I want this pedal now. Keep it genuine man!

Love mine, and boosting the low mids at times. Sounds great if you keep it on and gainstage it. Doesn’t sound like a pedal is on, and helps green muffs cut, as well as a Rat sound huge! I find it’s best running into anything dirty to really hear the effect! My case pedals, Sky King amp and an Ampeg VT-40. One thing that should be stated in the manual if you aren’t familiar with mixing…is that if you push the height knob over 1oclock or so, you will get a perceived bigger volume boost. But that’s what EQ does like this, and in the mix world usually that’s a thing before just pushing the volume up or down. Love the pedal! My only detractor is the proprietary expression. It’s big and would love to use my own smaller one. I also removed my BLuesBreaker pedal, and put my Microamp at the end of my chain. This pedal covers a few things with less need to tap dance for me.

Still love this pedal for doom stuff…set my Ampeg to edge of break up, and just pummel it with this last with a wide upper mid Q. Keeps the heavy 300hz on the amp, but pushes up the high mids. I’m already maxing out the treble on that all at 300hz, and it’s dark compared to most. Love this allows me to punch in for crazy chorus parts! Then back off when needed…great in my wet/dry setup on the dry amp to distort harder. Not sure of the built in distortion, I’ve yet to open mine up and crank the second stage gain. So def want to try that! I usually just use the normal boost. Pedal does so many things! It’s kind of an intro into the rest of the pedals for me. Been looking at getting the Warp or the Muff one. Parametric amp, parametric everything!

Well, this was a missed opportunity! They didn't address the main complaint everyone had about these pedals: the ability to use any expression pedal, instead of only the proprietary EP-1, which only works with Stone Deaf pedals and costs nearly as much as the PDF itself.

Man, I can't decide between this and the Q Boost... They both sound great in demos and they both clearly have the Queens vibe I'm looking for. My worry is that with the PDF I'd spend more time fiddling than playing, but it (seemingly) offers so much more options to sculpt your tone. I tend to be picky about gain sounds so maybe I should go for tweakability over simplicity.

Hey great tones! However, there's something puzzling me... everybody seems to think Josh Homme was using the pdf 1x on riffs from "songs for the deaf" or "lullabies to paralyze"... however, the pedal did not even exist until aroun 2009 as far as I read from stone Deaf, so how is that possible? Did he use the Maestro Parametric Filter and then replaced it with the PDF once it came out? Or did he just use different pedals...
@mattg08211 ай бұрын
Live he still uses the MPF in 2024…it’s hidden behind his amp always on. Probably as a secondary amp sound. Then the pdf up front for tonal changes. Thing is his tone is the just one part. I find having my Ampeg cranking the tubes makes it shine, or a Rat or Muff. But he used the MPF and later replaced it with the PDF up front. The MPF got moved to the back of the amps, and seems he uses a ABY. He’s got 4 VT40s on stage. But I believe 2 are amps and the other 2 are just extension cabs with the 4x10 or two 2x12 all painted red.

AFAIK he's playing through cranked amps into load boxes generally, so it can sound huge with the powered monitors on low. He mentions the REVV D20 for this video, which is an amp with built-in load box and cab sim and his IRs loaded in. So essentially there are no loud, mic'd cabs involved.
