As someone who had a baby at 2AM, I can confirm that extra day matter and Pam is right on. That extra day of help and free sandwiches and sodas ruled! Also the baby didn't come until 24 hours after the water broke

It was not actually a fourth wall break, in universe it is a documentary, employees see the cameras and carry microphones and this is why have Jim looking at the camera and the interviews.

They know this but Chris was pulling a fourth wall break in the sense of "maaaan what tape y'all are actors filming a TV show pretending to be in a documentary."
@NavsangeetSingh5 ай бұрын
Could it be that that was a 4th wall and we're the fifth wall? Or maybe 6th if The Normies themselves are the 5th. We're 5-dimensional beings.

Water breaking isn't really anything like it is on TV. For one thing, it's not a single big rush, it's just constant leaking. My water broke around 3 am, when I called they told me since it was clear, and my contractions weren't close together, to try going back to sleep. I did, slept for another few hours before contractions got more pressing. STILL weren't close enough together to go to the hospital (they actually told me they'd probably just send me home) so we walked around a garden center for a few hours until they finally got within 5 minutes. I think I got to the hospital before noon, and kiddo 1 was born shortly after midnight. BTW, my insurance had the same rule about 2 nights and midnight... but they counted based on when the baby was BORN, not when I checked into the hospital. Could potentially be a difference between insurance, but it doesn't really make sense to start counting based on when you get there... labor can last DAYS for some people, and they're not going to discharge you as soon as the baby pops out if your labor took too long. (Not saying no insurance company does it this way... insurance doesn't 't always make sense or do what's best for the patient unfortunately.)

@kristymekeel21725 ай бұрын
While the water breaking is definitely a sign that the baby is coming, it doesn't always mean soon because it also depends on how far dilated the mother is. I had consistant contractions for about 8 hrs before my water broke and thankfully I was fully dilated, so I was able to push my baby out about 30 minutes afterward. But for one of my birth class moms, her water broke before she had any contractions and didn't give birth for another 30 hrs.

When watching this ep for the first time, I had a really hard time trying to understand whether this “insurance policy” was a real thing in the US or just something really exaggerated by The Office's writers.
@Sirxeko5 ай бұрын
Under most insurance policies, the hospital stay is free up to a few days. It is covered at a certain percentage after that, usually 70-80%. Which, even with an 80% discount, it is still a price tag of a few grand for the patient. So it's not the end of the world for them to go more than 2 days, but it's probably 3k cheaper to make it to midnight.
@christopherb5015 ай бұрын
At this point, always assume that the health insurance / worker's comp / whatever in the US is worse than what the show states, no matter how "humorously" bad it sounds.

Randomly saw this episode in a hotel once, and the entire driving the the hospital scene was just one hit joke after another: "You know where you're gonna go?" "A hospital." "And what are you gonna have? "A baby", Michael having a go bag with nothing in it, Stanley getting on the elevator with them, "MICHAEL!" "What?!" "This is where I saw that deer last week." "Oh, where?", Dwight putting a siren on his car and throwing out a sword when the police approach, Michael parking in the ambulance spot and throwing his keys away, it's all just fantastic.
