I had a great time with my trainer. We were both about 50. He didn't care if the sun came up. We were done at 5pm each day. Driving at night was never going to happen with my trainer. The company wanted us to run 24/7. Not with my guy. He knew every bar in the country. I think we hit them all. Up at 4am and we would run. I felt like I was on vacation for 3 weeks. He would only take long runs and nothing over 32000lbs. Ever. He had been with the company for years. I already had my CDL. He knew everyone in the company. Nobody messed with him. Great memories. One time we drove from Atlanta to upstate NY empty to pick up a load of hay. Drove it to New Jersey. No joke. Another time we were told to pick up a load of spaghetti sauce in Virginia. We got there and backed up to the dock and went in. They handed us 1 case of spaghetti sauce. That's right 1 case. Drove all the way to Iowa with it in the cab. Great times.

. And they are wrong for doing that. It's one of many reasons why I quit training. And I have a few nightmare trainees is another, but there is more but those are the two biggest reason. The trainer should be in the passager seat at all time while the truck is moving down the road or on the ground while backing up and never in the bunk.

I honestly think it should be illegal to run the truck as a team if it's trainer / trainee. If you don't trust your trainee with your life, you get no sleep. The truck should have just the trainee driving and the trainer in the jump seat, unless the trainer is demonstrating something. Just my humble opinion. I've heard too many horror stories.

There’s plenty of validity to what you’re saying. The problem is there’s no enforceable regime on training for CMV drivers in the US. You can get your CDL at 1400 and be driving a 79,000 pound semi on a busy interstate at 1430. And given the bribery and fraud in lots of CDL testing, it’s amazing that more deaths don’t occur. I’m convinced that 5-10% of drivers don’t have CDLs or valid CDLs or medical cards. I think that many teams have a licensed driver that runs during the day when weigh stations are open, and 1 or 2 other “drivers” drive all night and that companies pay them almost nothing but don’t care because every trip they survive is a huge profit.

Bet I would have been a good student you'd appreciated. I was age 39, tops in CDL school, a friendly, intelligent guy and had a background in trucking. But my trainer at USA truck was a psycho case, schizophrenia with delusional features and severe mental depression on top of that. His attitude was, if somebody didn't know how to drive truck, then they shouldn't be out there. He had impossible demands and expectations and he hated me when I couldn't measure up. Several times when he became insane with rage, I was in fear for my life. He'd had 12 students so far and only 1 had made it. He was sink or swim, again and again he put me in dangerous high pressure situations like coming down a twisty mountain road at night, and deny me proper food and sleep, to make me quit. But he couldn't make me quit and that really pissed him off.

Have thought about TNT training but would not trust a TNT student enough (unless the student is a [combat]veteran) since events on active duty will always be a part of me (as an NCO). Plus, not sure how the training actually should be versus how it actually works. I have seen videos similar to this one but continue to hear TNT trainers will always be needed. I sold my truck last September. Time to retire, and have absolutely no regrets. God bless the actual truckers still running the freight. I believe it was Jan 2023 i pulled into a FJ for the night and i wanted to watch the NFL playoffs. I have a handicap placard and luckily there was an empty spot.near the speedco shop. But when I circled around in front of the shop to back into the space a KLLM rig was just sitting in my way. There wasn't room to get into the spot. I got out of my truck and limped up to the Kllm to see what the issue was. It was a younger woman just sitting in the drivers seat with a deer in the headlights look on her face. I asked her did the truck die? It was a fairly new truck. She answered, I can't back up. I ask, where's your trainer? She answered, " i don't have a trainer". SO, I made several attempts to direct her to essentially back up in a straight line into the space. But she had no ability to back that rig into the parking spot. So I made the decision to ask if I could back the truck up for her and she agreed. Now the whole time i tried to direct her into the space i could hear the steering creeking and popping. Once I was behind the wheel, I found that the power steering was WAY low on fluid. I backed the truck into the spot just enough that the driver needed to finish backing the remaining 53 feet. My truck was a 2014 KW T660 and it didn't make any suspension noises what so ever. Anyone that is a seasoned truck driver that has taken it upon themselves to be s trainer is an absolute asset to the industry IF they make the decision to properly educate a new driver to be be a professional. KLLM is a disaster waiting to happen.

Where your stuck in a truck with a stranger you just met. It's hard to get to know and teach someone on top of being stuck in a semi truck for weeks with them. Especially if there not a very clean person etc. You got a ton of issues that can happen. And it being a women is worse. Because soon as you have to say someone to them they will spin it as your a man and being mean etc.

Training should never be ran as a team driving scenario. Trainer should let the trainee drive all day, then they’ll both call it a night, rinse repeat. But even with that, it’s more apparent that there’s so many people who are just unteachable, or just flat out uninterested in learning their job. They’ll just disobey their trainer, ignore any instruction, don’t take suggestions or advice, and just can’t seem to be adept in any way. When you’re constantly having to repeat yourself on the most basic stuff, common sense stuff mind you, it really isn’t worth your energy to try and push further with that trainee. Guaranteed the truck would end up in a ditch or flipped over especially if they continuously speed and not slow down for lights or curves the way this trainee did. On top of it the attitude was the worst thing above all else. In closing, if they’re this bad in training, I don’t want to imagine them solo. But these companies nowadays just don’t care they’ll put anyone in a truck anymore and hand them the key.

I learned the hard way about going around corners too fast. I had a trailer full of soda (Lots of 2 liter soda bottles), and sure enough, when i got to my destination, soda had exploded everywhere. The trailer was a mess and i had to clean it all up, and of course, the receiver rejected the load. Big rookie mistake.

Tim as an educated Man with a background in Law, you must learn my friend that you can't put yourself and your Family at a loss by putting yourself in a compromising position with a Female that's not your Wife. The immature Female you had to kick off your Truck called the Police on you. You saw the Red Flags before she got onto your Truck. Tim my friend never ever put a Female on your Truck ever again. You dodged a legal Bullet with that lunatic Chick. I'm a United States Marine and Truck Owner now a former Police Detective, I've seen Women use illegal means to get a Man into legal troubles just by being a Drama Queen saying you did something to her when she doesn't get her way. Be cautious my friend. Train only Men stay away from modern Women. I think you know this already don't risk your freedom again. I see why Men refuse to train Women in anything these days. I never allow any Woman on my Truck no matter what. Tim you sound easy going and are good at what you do, be careful train only MEN!!! I hope you whipped down your Steering Wheel after she was using your Bunk Area and pissing in Fruit Cups for days Ha ha 🙂 I never would have that Chick on my Truck at all. I don't care what the Company was needing. The Red flags were there.

My first trainer was a O/O ( Owner Operator) , he was a complete azz, I'm pretty easy to get along with. We stopped to get fuel & I told him I had to use the restroom which I did, I also called to support person at my terminal, told him what was going on & I even him what he was doing with my log time, this was when paper logs were still being used. So he got us back to the terminal. He went to his house & I got my stuff off of his truck , left the key he gave to me to use in truck & locked it up. Later that day I got a company driver trainer, from there on it was smooth sailing.Infact we are friends. I've been driving for 16 yrs . In my eyes it takes a special person to do what we do. I run end dump & lowboy, lowboy I'm 14' wide 256K& change & about 110' long. I love it & wouldn't want to do anything else. I move our big excavators . Be safe & keep the shiny side up brother. Thank You for moving product.

Sir I listened and understood all you've said. But my problem with a lot of people and trainers too is just let people use the GPS for the most part. I personally don't like people telling me turn here or there because most of the times they tell you to turn is almost when your passing the turns. Just let them use their GPS. It's also far less talking for you too.

Am studying and getting ducks in row to get my Commercial Permit, then my CLD. Know I'm going to have to train, so am watching videos trying to learn as much as I can from a lot of different sources. You are an awesome trainer, the kind I want to train me. I watched the whole thing, and am sure you didn't mean it to be, but this was entertaining, I found myself anticipating what she would do next!! LOL ... yet serious as all get out too. First, it's YOUR truck, you respect your trainer's truck. It's a privilege to even be allowed to train with someone. She was a nightmare and almost thought you were going to say someone punked you by giving her to you to train! It was scary, and hilarious at times too. How did you put up with this??? The thing of it is, they better take her driving behaviors seriously, or they'll end up with a wrecked truck and possibly lost lives. Driving a semi is that serious. It's NOT a car. It's very intimidating and humbling even the thought of driving one of these, but it's something I really want to do. Just respect the truck. AND RESPECT THE TRAINER. God bless you sir!!

I would’ve definitely made sure she got on the highway safe because again she’s a trainee and I hear these stories all the time that the trainers are always on their phone. They’re always not paying attention and the train is like either, not trying to bother them and figure out, what to do with to be honest and to be safe

Allergic to Antihistamines? Ya it’s actually a legit thing. I woke up one day and develop crazy allergies overnight to everything including my own cologne and laundry detergent that I’ve worn for decades. It’s a result of an autoimmune issue. I’m actually allergic to antihistamines! It’s not technically an allergy in the traditional context. But it enhances the allergic reactions. Causes some kind of imbalance or something which I don’t fully understand (nor does the medical community) . But I always thought people with allergies where week and often weird until I discovered real hell for myself. That’s not excusing her behavior or disgusting living habits. Just stating a fact that traditional allergy medications can cause issues with some people. I think people often forget that training isn’t team driving. It’s a common narrative because it’s become an acceptable practice of convince and profit. Team driving only benefits the company and the trainer but NOT the trainee. It’s taking advantage of the rookie. The trainer should NEVER fully run out their hours incase of an incident where they need to take over. They should constantly be watching over the trainee in the dummy seat until the end of the tour when they’ve been adequately trained, performance has been reviewed and full trust in ability has been established. You can’t train while your sleeping or snapped up in the bunk. Trainee sleeps when the trainer sleeps. The trainee is awake when the trainer is woke. A fabricator doesn’t sleep while the trainee is welding up the product. A plumber doesn’t sleep in the van while an apprentice is under the crawl space. It’s no different. Unfortunately common sense or liquid intelligence isn’t a pre screening requirement of the cdl process. Companies need to a better job in the pre screening process instead of being so desperate. They also need to pay double or triple to train someone who’s on their second or third trainer if they insist on perpetually trying. They also need to let trainers talk to each other or read any reports. Those people that say kick someone after the mirror aren’t equipped to train. In this instance it proved to be a sign of things to come but that’s not always the case. People do make mistakes. This woman however wasn’t destined to wheel.

Just finished truck school and CDL exam and will be training soon. It is good to hear an instructor perspective (not that I would ever disrespect someone’s truck or advice that way) wow! I am curious as to the reason you don’t allow use of GPS navigation? I know that you told her the route to follow but I would be afraid that I would forget exactly which direction and roads I was supposed to take in an unfamiliar area and my trainer would be trying to rest.

I do let my trainees use GPS if I’m not sitting beside them. In this case, the trainee tried to blame not being allowed to use GPS on her coming into a 25 mph off ramp at 58 mph. GPS doesn’t fix speeding. But as I’ve said before, why would you need GPS when I tell you in Omaha to stay on I-80 west until you get to Evanston? It’s a simple instruction. Many trainees and drivers in general are using their electronic devices improperly or illegally. I see it every day. I saw a crash on Wednesday that I guarantee was caused by distracted driving. Luckily only the truck driver(s) were injured when they put their truck in the ditch on its side. The accident was totally avoidable. Great weather, very long sight lines and unlimited visibility. No excuse.

Another reason to train to not rely on GPS systems, what happens if a satellite goes down or some other issue arises and your GPS isn't working... It's good practice to familiarize yourself with using a Road Atlas so that you are SOLELY relying on technology... Just my 2 cents lol
@cold0ero

I think this is a case of "Who's driving the truck? The GPS or the driver?" I've seen the GPS suggest routes that make no sense and if the driver isn't paying attention could end up in a bad scenario. I've personally had my GPS tell me to go straight on I-69w and make a left at McPherson when there was a ramp before to get off and I passed it stupidly listening to the GPS because in that area the Interstate is also a US highway and I thought maybe there was a light. There was a light... Under the road I drove over. If I had just followed the signs, I would have made it to the Prime facility in Laredo without feeling like an idiot. To make matters worse, because that facility is so close to the border, I could have accidentally gone down a route for crossing the border. GPS is a tool that can give you a general idea of what you might want to do or to give general ETAs and such, but it is not a substitute for paying attention.
