BONANZA! THE VIRGINIAN! THE QUEST! Before his immortal portrayal of Delta House frat man "Otter" and before his twice Emmy-nominated part on "West Wing" as the Vice President, but after his role as one of Theodore "Beaver" Cleavers' school chums, multi-hyphenate actor/director/producer Tim Matheson was a regular on 3 TV western series. They were "The Virginian" (in 1969-70), "Bonanza" (1972-73) and "The Quest" (1976). Tim has fond memories of working on all of them and of getting paid to play cowboys, especially with Kurt Russell, his co-star from the exceptional series, "The Quest." Recorded April 16, 2019.

RIP, James Drury. Tim Matheson was actually in Season 8 of 9 seasons of THE VIRGINIAN. Season 9 was a redesign of the series, and it was renamed THE MEN FROM SHILOH and had a new theme song, sounding a lot like those "Spaghetti Western" tunes of the time. MeTV is starting reruns of Season 14 of BONANZA today, so fans can see Mr. Matheson for the next few weeks there. I'm glad MeTV is running the entire series of shows like BONANZA, GUNSMOKE, and MY THREE SONS (where Mr. Matheson made a Season 3 guest appearance that should be rerun in the next few weeks) rather than the usual partial rerun packages of these series. My favorite Tim Matheson movie appearance (of those I've seen so far) is as Roy/Trevor in "A Very Brady Sequel". He did a great job playing a comic villain there.

Yes, the full episodes are available. Our KZbin audiences for A WORD ON WESTERNS is growing and a lot of you out there are enjoying the series, but are unable to join us. So, we put every effort into delivering complete interviews. After the segments have been edited for the weekly episodes, they are placed together in the Playlist section and can be viewed back-to-back, like binging on Netflix or Amazon. When we began broadcasting our AWOW tributes to western films and filmmakers on KZbin in January 2014, most people viewed them on their phones so we were advised to keep the segments at the then acceptable length of 3-4 minutes, excerpted from the 15-20 minute original live interviews, and discussing a single topic. It was taking about 20 hours per week to book talent, crews, do a rough cut, gather clips and illustrations to produce and edit these shorter episodes. After 5 years, times and viewer acceptance for longer segments (and large screens) is now possible so we began extending episodes, trying to make them at least 10 minutes in length. We have succeeded and have often tripled the running times of our original episodes. But now production time for me is 25-30 hours a week, 52 weeks out of the year! I'm continuing to launch a new episode every Sunday and the pressure of (my self imposed) schedule, after (now) 6 years, is relentless. We do tape a two-hour interview show every other month at The Autry Museum in Los Angeles, open free to the public, where the individual, live, interviews run as long as 20 minutes each. These full interviews are edited into two parts for viewing. We are packing the theater with western hungry film and TV fans and, now beginning our 7th year, are the only weekly series to even attempt documenting western film history. Thanks for watching, sharing and subscribing to our history of western films and TV. Until they cart me off to Boot Hill, there are more new episodes coming every week! Adios, and thanks again.

Kurt Russel & Goldie Hahn once lived ~40 miles "up-valley" from me in Snowmass. They took their Jeeps to Berthod Motors, where my husband was their mechanic. They were both "down to earth' people. Remembered Everyones names. Saw me brining my husband a sack lunch. A month later, saw the in our local market, said hello & told me "George" was a great mechanic and man. Then said that I (using me name) was a kind wife & woman. They both treated Everyone one like this. Never put on any 'airs' & were beloved by many. My dad is 93 now and sometimes the years are heavy on him. However some of his sharpest memories are when he could go to the movies. It gave him an outlet away from the Depression. His favorite cowboy was Bob Steele. He liked him because he didn't kiss as many girls. :) When I've visited him over the last couple of years instead of turning on the news I've turned on KZbin and watch the Bob Steele videos posted with dad. I must admit, he could really ride! I watch for the way he leaps into his stirrup too, not grabbing the horn until he's in mid-air. I'm amazed at the way these guys ride too! Afternoons are fun with dad, he laughs at how I watch for Bob to leap into his stirrup and he always comments that those horses ought to be half dead by the time they finish. Anyway, thanks so much Rob. You're recording history here. Your contribution will live on as long as we love cowboys. Thank you, thank you.

I love the title of this vid; it made me laugh big time. Poor Tim didn't fit in with either of those westerns, but he definitely wasn't the reason the shows left the air. Fans were angry at Bonanza for killing off Little Joe's bride and baby and they were never going to be able to replace Dan Blocker; and he just didn't fit in on The Virginian. He felt like the younger demographic who was out of place alongside Drury and McClure. He's a darn good actor and certainly has a long list of worthy credits. ... oh, and, yes, I always noticed that opening re: Canary in the buckboard amid all the other action shots!

M. M. He was also in the Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry sequel Magnum Force in 1973 as a young corrupt psychotic vigilante bike cop along with David Soul, Kip Niven and Robert Urich who were the other bad cops. He was definitely best known in movies as Otter in Animal House a classic comedy and one of my favorites from 1978 and he was in the Chevy Chase movie Fletch, Black Sheep with Chris Farley among many other movies and tv shows like Burn Notice as a bad guy and The West Wing.

While many of the stars on these classic shows are now gone, there are probably a lot of guest actors who are still alive. Considering how many episodes of Gunsmoke and Bonanza were made, there were a lot of guest stars over the years who could tell us a lot about their experiences.

Great interview, Rob. The Quest was a good show, a bit of the Alias Smith & Jones vibe. It was the last of the TV westerns. Matheson always came across to me as a very competent actor, good in every role he portrayed. My favorite Russel movie is John Carpenter's 1982 The Thing, a very underrated film. I hope there is a part 2 to this interview.

Tim Matheson helped make Animal House a classic by playing the head of the Delta fraternity and originally producers wanted Matheson to be one of the omegas . Matheson refused to play one of the straight laced Omegas and demanded to play one of the partying Deltas.
