Let's be honest, can't blame Subaru for having this mindset in regards to an ECM problem. In reality, I'd guess most of the time if there is a real ECU problem and there was an AP involved in any way, it's probably a great indicator that the problem is from the tuning.

I bought a certified pre-owned 2015 Subaru legacy and the front diff went up at 65K miles. The warrany for a certified pre-owned is 7 years or 100,000 miles. I had the car for 6.5 years and they told me that the warranty expired, because they did the work to make it certified 6 months before I bought it.
@rammy3767
@rammy3767 Жыл бұрын
@@ashten2005 yeah thats ridiculous. I never understood the whole “5 years or 60K miles” type of warranties. My brother’s throttle body was going out on his 2017 WRX at around 43K miles and obviously it was faulty. The car more than 5 years old but was under 60K miles nonetheless. But they wouldn’t cover it because it was past 5 years. Apparently its not 60K miles OR 5 years but whichever one comes first. So although the car was below 60K miles, it was past the 5 year duration so they wouldn’t cover it. Powertrain warranty is very misleading.

@@rammy3767 I think a law should be passed where every consumer warranty should start at the PoS rather than whenever the manufacturer wants it to start. I had a horrible experience with an access port on my car as well. I couldn't get it to flash my ecu for some reason. I had to send it to cobb to do the flash for me. Right after I got it back and plugged up the flashed ecu, my Turbo failed! So I ended up selling the access port, putting a new turbo on the car and trailering it to a tuner that completely robbed me blind. They held the car hostage for months. They even stole a peice off of my car and put it on their own racecar! So I'm clearly not happy with either one of them but agile automotive in the philly/ dc area I'd certainly like to warn people about.

I have a 2018 WRX that I bought new and put a COBB tune on it after about 6 months of break in. It works great! I kept my car stock other than the tune for the past 5 years for this exact reason: any modified parts will definitely void the warranty. Even having the tune can void the warranty. I was OK with the risk because ultimately I could afford to lose my warranty..but who wants to lose their warranty? I did have two warranty repairs done with zero problems with the dealership. Now that it's past warranty though I think it's time to put a new exhaust on hehe.

Absolutely need a battery charger--coming from the BMW tuning world, it's absolutely critical on these newer vehicles. I have a Solar 10A charger and it works awesome. Once hooked up to the charger, you should also have door closed, HVAC off, everything disconnected, everything that could be off turned off. Obviously looked like you had enough charge at the start, so it doesn't really matter here, but I've never had issues following those rules. One thing that is odd is HOW on earth subaru can't just debrick their ECU. Crazy how phones have more advanced recovery options than vehicle ECUs. It is also very common that ECUs lock to a VIN. This is why you normally have to go to a third party for bench unlock. I will say I think what you did with Subaru is really kinda BS. When you tune the car, you have to accept you will not have a warranty. Trying to obscure this is... not ethical.
@fickedyodad2137
@fickedyodad2137 Жыл бұрын
The only reason I do use the battery charger is because I’ve had a ups backup save motherboards on high end computers during a bios flash. Anytime I do any firmware updates on anything I setup redundant power sources. I’ve had a surge and outage brick a few expensive pieces of hardware throughout the years. Mostly during bios flashes. And they cannot void warranty for tuning. In fact they have to prove that what you did is that caused the issue.

Been using Cobb since 2004, when the AP first came out. Was an active member on the Cobb forums. They’re a great company. People would brick their ECU’s while flashing. Cobb would instruct customers to mail in their ECU to have it fixed by Cobb. In your case, you had a fully working car. You tried to flash a tune, and something messed up. Not SOA or Subaru dealer’s problem. Dealership offered you FREE 2 month loaner, and Cobb offered to foot the bill for everything, and you were complaining bc you had videos to make and car shows to go to? They were giving you a loaner - get creative doing videos on the loaner. Go to the car shows, do videos, adjust and move on. With car modding, nothing goes to schedule, and you need to be flexible. If you can’t pivot, then maybe this isn’t for you.

Let Subaru report you, they really have been going downhill for about a decade now for reasons exactly like this and what they did to their own Ambassadors and a long list of others...but the WRX is one of the best year round toys your money can buy.

Couple of questions. 1. Sounds like you didnt have to say how the ECU got fried with Subaru. Didn't Subaru ask you when you dropped it off initially if you installed an Accessport? I would think that would be the first question they would ask. 2. If Subaru took initiative to begin fixing the issue, why did you assume Cobb will be paying for all cost? Thanks
@StreetInspired1
@StreetInspired1 Жыл бұрын
So initially, I told subaru it just happened because I was advised by a few people not to say anything to jeprodize my warranty. Cobb accepted responsibility immediately and told me to take it to Subaru and they would reimburse me for all costs. But because I didn't say anything to subaru, they were going to replace it under warranty. Until I found out it would be 2.5 months for an ECM to show up. After telling Cobb this, they shipped out the ECM to Subaru. At the time of them installing it and everything coming from Cobb I'm sure they had their suspicions about tuning but they never asked if I had tuned or attempted to tune the vehicle so I still never said anything. But because it wasn't a direct part from subaru headquarters, I still had to pay the full price of the repairs (which cobb reimbursed) and they had to submit a modified vehicle report to SOA that basically killed my warranty on any future ECM issues and could potentially be used to deny other related warranty claims.

@@StreetInspired1 thanks for sharing your experience. I have a Cobb and ETS intake on my car. And I agree I would only answer questions that are asked and that would be it. Also I didn't have a battery tender when I was flashing my VB. It's a 22 and battery is new right? I luckily didn't have an issue but for anyone else watching it might be a good idea just to do it even though it sounds like that wasn't your issue.

Add me to the 90%! I have flashed/removed AP so many times without a battery charger. The first flash on my VB it seemed a tad slower than my VA cars but other than that nothing unusual. It seems yours was a freak thing with the ecu. It also makes me wonder.. having another ecu requires the stealership to do that initialization/install? I have never had a backup ecu but it seems some important things need to be done after seeing your vid to even consider a backup ecu. Thanks for letting us know it needs to be brand new and not linked to another vin. If Subaru needs to do the reprogramming that will never work for us modified peeps.

I went from cobb over to ecutek (still cobb) to be able to tune the car how it should be. Bricked my ecu 3 different times and had my 21 wrx down for 8mo. Cobb recovered the ecu every time but the last time they stripped screws and left them in, smeared rtv everywhere on the outside and inside, and it showed up looking like they threw it down a flight of stairs and told me nothing. I contacted them and they tried to blame it on me saying I put "black locktite" on the threads (that they worked on) and they would not help me with any more recoveries. (Even though it is ecutek's (cobb) fault for not having the process correct for a 21. Love it.

I've really been wanting an AP for my '20 WRX, but I know even a stage 1 tune with zero mods Subaru will pretty much black lists you on covering things. So I'm holding off, yes that sux, but keeping warranty seems pretty important to me. Since if anything happens they'll point at the AP tune no matter what to avoid taking responsibility. Sorry to say but when you decide to buy/install an AP with a current warranty, you're a little dim if you think everything's still covered.

I havnt dealt with Subaru but I know Hyundai was able to detatch an ECU from a Vin. There was a certain procedure to do it and there could only ever be one ecu hooked to a vin(to prevent swapping tuned ecus for stock like the good ol days). I would lean more the dealer just didnt wanna bother with it.

Wow! I am really surprised by both Cobb and Subaru. I can't believe Subaru would even touch the car since it had been modded. Attorneys would love to sue Subaru and the dealer if something went wrong. Cobb really went above and beyond. Most companies would have told you to pound sand when you didn't follow the instructions. Not only did they help you, they paid the bill. That's incredible. Wonder if your being a KZbinr had anything to do with that?

Wow what a story! Cody the only thing I am confused about is the 2nd ECM that Cobb sent; I thought the first one they sent was "used" and the second one they sent was also "used." If the second one was truly brand new, sealed in plastic and whatnot, why didn't they just send you that first? Maybe an experiment to see if the used one would work? And if not, how did Cobb manage to have a brand new ECM if they are so severely backordered? Maybe they have some on hand in case they break something during R&D.
@StreetInspired1
@StreetInspired1 Жыл бұрын
Cobb told me they had a few laying around that they originally bought for R&D purposes. Cobb is still unsure how the first one ended up being used because they swore they sent out a new unit, so it may have some how got mixed up and they sent the wrong one. The second one they send was brand new and had no assigned Vin which is why subaru was then able to install it.
