It’s funny wrx owners in general complain about eating a transmission at 400ish hp. What people don’t realize is that 450 wheel horsepower with awd is pretty stout. Even with many rear wheel drive cars. Launching a 450hp mustang on slicks is even rough on them. It’s pretty violent to do to a drivetrain in general. Especially in a car definitely not designed to handle that abuse. Doesn’t surprise me whatsoever.

400hp to the wheels is a decent amount of power for anything. Launching an awd anything at 400-450 is pretty violent on the drivetrain. Especially a little 4 cylinder car. My mustang at 450whp is pretty violent with sticky tires so I know. That has 31 spline axles, tremec 6 speed, heavy duty clutch and so on. Sometimes it hits gears so hard I cringe. What do you think is going to happen to a little wrx ? I own a 23 sapphire blue and I’m leaving it stock with my 120k mile warranty and I’ll enjoy it for what it is. Make it look good and some exhaust and leave it alone and not hammer the death out of the car. Another 50-100hp would be awesome but not when it has a thousand miles on it.

Subaru-designed transmissions are not meant for repeated abuse, especially beyond stock power. The Aisin-designed (STI and BRZ) transmissions are just better built/designed. People laughed at me, but when the VB WRX was revealed, gun to my head I'd pick the WRX GT with the "SPT". I just hate Subaru's in-house designed manual transmissions. Having owned 8 of them and being in the game for 20 years, my trust in the transmissions outside of the STI and BRZ (both of which I owned and loved) has waned to nearly zero. I didn't mind my 08 Forester XT 5MT, but I still felt as though that was just a matter of time. I sold that for the 2011 WRX, which I had to replace a pitch fork after about 45k or so, iirc. Anyway, everyone has their varied experiences and bias. I appreciate you sharing yours! STI swap. There's already a sussy slot for DCCD.
@mcglsr237 Жыл бұрын
Dude that sucks, sorry to hear that. It's funny, I remember tons of people on the internet, forums, all saying "don't get the STI, it's not worth the extra money, blah blah blah." (I know, no STI for 2022 - thanks Subaru). But the point is, the extra money for the STI went somewhere. Subaru did not just rebadge a WRX and charge $10K+ more for it. And you are seeing, unfortunately, where some of that money went: the STI 6-sp trans. It's a fantastic transmission, it takes a lot of abuse, and it takes a lot of extra power above stock. I'm not suggesting you STI swap the car. I actually highly, highly respect your decision to go with the cheaper WRX trans; money doesn't grow on trees and ending up in financial ruin because of a car is insane. So respect for being smart about it. The WRX was never meant to be a race car. It's a street car, with some fun bits that are rally inspired. The STI was the race car in street car clothing. Do what you got to do, turn the power down, enjoy the car for many, many miles :) Good luck!

I get that it could be hit or miss, but blowing up 3 transmissions...
@StreetInspired1 Жыл бұрын
@snoopyalien24 my response to that would be this: consider most people who blow their transmission get scared and sell the car and never buy another one. I've owned four, all making around double the factory torque and 3/4 blew up. My last car I STI swapped... much stronger transmission. I laucnhed the car over 50 times after the sti swap, tons of flat foot shifting and slamming gears, did awd donuts dozens of times and it never skipped a beat. I abused it because I knew it could handle it.... and it did. All the abuse and it never had an issue. If I would have done any of that in my new wrx the transmission would've lasted probably 3k instead of the 10k that it did.
@ryukoysusei Жыл бұрын
@@StreetInspired1 this is exactly my point. Abuse destroys parts. Can some things handle much more abuse? Of cousre. Most drag subarus still use the stock STI trans. It's an animal. @sawyercrosby3710 Жыл бұрын
I really wanna be on your side. But like you said, a lot of this depends on how you treat the car. In the older 5 speed, it was very common to blow gears. But somehow, you could blow a gear and drive the car hundreds of miles. The glass gears would simply shear down and be unusable. I drove an 04 WRX 2k miles without first gear. It sounds like yours blew due to drivetrain shock both times. This happens when load from the engine is met with a lot of resistance from the ground. The system is designed so the clutch takes most of the abuse, saving the trans ideally. They added a clutch delay valve to try to stop clutch dumps. But that cannot stop redline launches. Please do not get an upgraded clutch. Or a lightweight flywheel. A heavier flywheel will absorb some of the shock from heavy driving, and you definitely would rather blow a clutch than a trans. A stiffer trans will just throw more daily stress on the trans, which you do not want. I wont say it’s your fault, because these transmissions fail more from launches than power. Ie a stock power trans would fail faster if it is launched daily than a 450whp car never launched. And I think Subaru really cheaped out on this trans, which sucks for everyone. My VB has 15k miles driven hard but never launched at 360whp/400tq and its holding the power great.
@StreetInspired1 Жыл бұрын
I agree with most of what your are saying however I've only launched this car twice and once was on stock power level and once at around 380. Both I didn't clutch dump but slipped the clutch quite a bit. I'd put money on my failure being from hard shifting whilst accelerating on double the factory torque.

I do agree with this to an extent. Car manufacturers are using cheaper materials. I've been driving a 2997 Ford Taurus while my car is sitting waiting on the parts to get here and the 1997 Taurus has almost no rattles or vibrations while my 2022 sounded like it was rattling apart 3 months into owning it. Subaru wrx transmissions have always been very bad though.
@driverpsyche Жыл бұрын
@@StreetInspired1 my thought was to emphasized that just because it's a sportscar doesn't mean it has any extra room for power planned in its components (WRX or STI or BRZ). Appreciate your honesty and sharing your experience with everyone. This is extremely helpful for me as I am looking into my VB goals before doing anything. Very good points that it comes down to power, abuse, and mileage. Besides custom and a lot of work, are there any other options other than a STi swap for transmissions? It's got me worried that lower mileage STi swaps are going to be rare and only get rarer/more expensive as time goes on. Maybe another transmission is in development? Just curious about that. I don't want to put myself in a tight spot later on. Thinking about maybe next year going for the STi swap or just sticking with stock and no tuning, but that is no fun either.

Honestly I'm not to sure. I know they used to make PPG gear sets for the 5 speed wrx transmission so you could build it but I haven't seen any for the 6 speed wrx transmission. I think the community has been using the STI as a crutch for too long. There needs to be some sort of standard trans upgrade setup. Of course, figuring out what the common points of failure are needs to happen first.
@spencersinger3209 Жыл бұрын
Due to the split case design in the wrx there isn’t much to fix it…STI transmission is bulletproof at these power levels
@geraldolson542 Жыл бұрын
@spencersinger3209 I get that its a solid upgrade, but its also a very intensive upgrade to handle the power levels that a tune and some simple mods produce. I, for one, could not justify the upgrade, so unless something more cost effective comes out or my financial situation changes dramatically, I'm stuck with a stock car.

My VB has been in the shop twice for a whining noise in what my dealer calls "somewhere in the powertrain?" It's already had a throwout bearing and flywheel replaced. I'm trying to explain to them I think it's in the Trans. They say the noise is too faint to locate. I talked to the mechanic and tech and they both agree something is going to happen. I have a pile of parts. The Cobb A.P. still in the box and ETS everything plus AOS Subaru won't warranty if I install. Sucks but I'm glad I didn't plug in the AP and all the bolt on's while I was working in Iowa near Graham at Boosted Performance. So now it's a waiting game. Not sure what to do? The techs are saying blow it up. I don't want to abuse it to failure because that can cause more underlying problems. Don't want to sell because interest rates, and I've already color matched the bumper and done cosmetics. Any suggestions? I really want to start modifications. 17k on car. Over a year old. 😢
@ReinierAlansalon Жыл бұрын
I'm legit having the same exact problem. I have a whining noise as well especially on deceleration. First time I took it in around 14K, they narrowed it down to being in the transmission. Was in the shop for 2 months while they worked on getting a Subaru engineer out. They replaced some parts in it and the noise was close to being gone but it's back now at 17K. Car is stock.

@brett9358 Жыл бұрын
You keep mentioning HP numbers, but its your TQ numbers that matter when it comes to your transmission. Whether you launch it or not matters. Whether you have a stock or aftermarket clutch matters. Whether your tune applies too much TQ at lower RPM levels matters. The fact that youve blown 3 trans makes it seem the way you drive and set up your car is the problem.
@StreetInspired1 Жыл бұрын
Correct. All of that is a factor. The car makes 455Tq. The power had a big part in it. Ripping on a stock car isn't that big of a deal usually. But when you rip on a car with that much Torque it's only a matter of time. I don't beat the shit our of my car but I have fun with it. It's definitely my fualt it broke
@brett9358 Жыл бұрын
Ouch yea 455tq is way too much for the wrx trans. Doesnt matter whether you beat on it or not at that level, its guaranteed its toast eventually if not quickly. Upgrading your clutch from stock will actually make the trans break sooner funny enough. Doesnt sound fun but i wouldnt go over 350 if you want any longevity out of it. @@StreetInspired1

I've been running corn in my big block mopar for 6 years and went through some pumps in the beginning not being e85 compatible. Just wondering how long this little stock pump will last. Burger claims the new pump flows 30% more. I'm digging the channel, thanks for keeping us all informed.

My VB is nearing 50,000 miles bone stock and I beat on it on a daily basis. It's a cautionary tale for anyone seeing all those Cobb tuners, aftermarket cooling, intakes, etc. etc. -- DON'T mess with the internals unless you have money set aside for a possible rebuild or replacement of components. All I've given this car is oil and diff fluid changes every few thousand miles and it drives without any issues. If you don't have the money to afford a blown engine or transmission and are not okay with getting randomly stranded on the road, then buy yourself a cheap LS whatever and wrench on that instead.

I can see your pov. But also understand this car is making double the Torque the factory intended and I can count 6 local people that I know who have blown their wrx transmissions. Most people this happens to and they sell their subaru and never buy one again. It's happened to me this many times because I've owned 4 wrxs and every one was making much more than stock power and I have fun with them. At some point it just gives.

I don't mean to be pointing fingers or anything like that, but just trying to understand what went wrong so the rest of us can hope to avoid the same mistake. In both of the stories you mentioned, the failure sounds like it happened on decel/downshifting, which would have absolutely nothing to do with how much power the car has. Is it possible you made a mistake somehow in the downshift or something else that could have sent a sudden shock load through the trans (dropping the clutch into 2nd from idle while cruising at speed, for example)? Was there something that happened earlier on the highway cruise or corvette pull that you may not have noticed until later? Thanks for the insight! Crossing my fingers for my VA trans.
@StreetInspired1 Жыл бұрын
I am in no way arrogant or think my driving is flawless but when I down shift I always rev match and I'm always very easy on the clutch release. There was never a sudden jolt or slamming into gear on downshifing. My first wrx went out the same way and I heard that one while driving before coming to a stop. This last one during the pull it was music playing and exhaust and I didnt notice until I was almost stopped. And in my last wrx I was on the highway going 80 with the windows down and just didn't hear it until coming to a stop I think it's just been because it's not a super loud noise and the car was still operating that both times I didn't notice until decel. I do think what broke it was almost certainly from shifting the car into third aggressively with all of the extra Torque coming on immediately.

Joey Montaltos swap was under $5700. I know you cant always find the same deals but if you could get it for around that price id rather pay another $1700 for the sti swap and be done with it.
