This week on our stone house renovation, we learnt a hard lesson about trusting our gut, as we hit a stumbling block that we should’ve seen coming (well Ricky kinda did)!
If building your own home as amateurs has a steep learning curve, this week was a bit of a rollercoaster as we tried to overcome problems making our own DIY hand poured concrete window sills in preparation for our new tiny house windows. Our cute stone cottage has lots of charm and character, but unfortunately no straight lines and this is where the trouble began! Making mistakes comes hand in hand when building a home with no experience and we've had to accept that. We're quickly learning that the key is to not get too down or frustrated by it, learn from it, pick yourself up and have another go.
We can’t afford any further delays as the hot weather is just around the corner and we have some huge home transformations to make before summer arrives at the farm!
LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoyed it & SUBSCRIBE to follow our journey as we document our life here in Portugal & the many DIY projects that we'll be tackling including renovating a tiny stone home, setting up systems to grow some of our own food & finally restoring the 100+ year old farm house.
Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊
Ricky & Victoria x
-------------
We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

We have a lot of Hummingbirds here, and it would be so cool to watch them come to the feeder. I never realized how much I missed the birds. I’m primarily bedridden and only go out maybe twice a year for appointments. I was an avid outdoorsman person and spent from sun rise to sun set outdoors. I was hit by a pickup truck while out walking in January 2016. My life has changed drastically and I miss the outside. I think getting to see little videos of the birds would be great.

Hi guys, fun video! That "mighty weed" of yours is actually mullein. It is a wonderful healing herb for lung ailments/coughs and such. You could dry the leaves and cut the flowers off the stalk and dry them. You'll have a lovely tea should you get a chest cold. Pour the tea thru a coffee filter, to catch the little hairs from the leaves so they won't irritate your throat, Best wishes from Karin, herbalist in Wyoming.

The sills turned out really nice in the end. With the Jurassic weed could you make a cut and hole in a plant pot so that it can be slid around the base of the stem to protect it from the strimmer blade. See how high it gets before it falls over or Jack comes scrambling down followed by an angry giant.

Your sills look spot on Ricky! Lovely lovely job. It's was an excellent first attempt at forms to find a much better and efficient way! I had a pony. Planned my life around him. Bought 5 acres and lost him the first night we were all living together on the farm. Now I have changed my life 180 degrees, farm first, pony second (if ever again 💔) but I'm OK with the sharp turn my life took-taken a year and a bit to process though. 0Just chickens now but maybe other livestock in the future. Goats? Cow? Oinkers? Who knows, maybe just vegetables??

That tall weed might be a Mullein plant which is medicinal and the big leaves make wilderness toilet paper. I couldn’t see up close to be sure. The yellow flowers are a sign it is a Mullein plant too. The leaves have a soft fuzziness on them. Mullein is very good for the lungs! I love how the stone house is looking! Great job you two!!! 💖🌷 Maybe make a form to make a concrete chunk that when dry you pull out of the form and then point it in and set it up on the window, after a layer of point or concrete mud smoothed down. Make it a bit thick so not too runny. It will be like you made a homemade stone. Just an idea. I haven’t finished the video yet, not sure if you already came up with a solution! 😁 Oops! Finished the video and you did just that with the forms, even with color and a slight slant. The concrete window seal turned out beautiful! Awesome job! 😍

We actually moved one already & it came off the osb with next to no effort. The oil seems to have done the trick. We did consider rebar but with it being such a thin slab opted against it. @margomoore4527
@margomoore4527 4 ай бұрын
The first thing I thought was, that you need a couple of goats and at least half a dozen chickens. Get a manure pile started, let the goats eat the dried grape leaves (ON A LEASH or they’ll damage the vines), and the chickens will help keep down the bug population, which will otherwise decimate anything you plant. Geese help with that, too. But you’ll need to fence the garden and just let ONE hen and her family in at a time to get the bugs. Don’t leave them in too long. You should start an asparagus patch right away. And some dwarf fruit trees. And berries….

I follow 2 other Portugal homesteads working on stone houses. Your videos top theirs because of your sense of humor and your interaction with one another. There are many videos that you have done that make me giggle which for me is unusual to do with KZbin videos. Keep up your great videos, your humor and showing your mistakes as well as achievements.

You should have inserted some form of concrete reinforcement in the sills. Without it the sills will eventually crack as the building moves..
@johnmcmillan7048
@johnmcmillan7048 5 ай бұрын
Helpful tip: There is a product called “Superplasticizer” it’s a water reducing liquid that one adds to a VERY DRY concrete mix. You absolutely DO NOT want a sloppy mix when pouring concrete window sills.The Superplasticizer greatly reduces the need for water by 30% or MORE!. Why is that a good thing? Excess water results in shrinkage cracks, which is of course a bad thing, particularly when one is casting relatively thin concrete pours. ALSO: there are admixtures to improve adhesion between new concrete and old concrete, or stone, or… Some of these products are acrylic based and some are polymer based liquids. You add some of the adhesive product to your concrete mix and use a paint brush to paint the surface with some of the product on the surface you are placing your new concrete on. I don’t know the names of the products in Portuguese but I am sure it’s available where you are. It’s available in France because I have used it there. Do yourself a BIG favor, consult with your local masonary product supplier for advice. I find it to be very frustrating watching you flounder around learning by making mistakes. Wishing you luck! Your friend J.

Well what a coincidence! I was just wondering yesterday when I watched your new video if/when you would have kids and I'm reading comments from lots of other people who have the same thought. I too would love to live there. I love what you have done so far with the tiny house, but I especially love watching any yard/gardening work you do. Outside work has always been one of my favorite things.

Considered it but it would have made it tricky to release the form work after the pour. Happy in the end that we changed plans as I don’t think they would have ended up as well finished had we poured in situ

Good morning, your videos are so interesting, humorous, yet so much perseverance from both of you. Just doing the project slowly but steadily. Love your property, so many trees that can just grow freely. The Stone House is really captivating. Just so pretty! It will be even more charming when done, and the stone work from a "non-professional" mason is fabulous. Where there is a will, there is a way!! Just loved how Teddy went on the huff, I love dogs with a personality of their own. We had an Airedale, he was tempted with with toasted cheese and tomato sandwiches I made for my husband's work lunch, (who can resist a warm toasted sandwich?) waiting for the stuff to cool I left it on the counter top and he ate the two doublers! My husband could not find the sandwiches, I came in to see what is happening and realised - the first time ever - George ate it all up. When I scolded him he also went under the table, sat in the corner and sulked for the complete morning, he just totally ignored me, he would not even look at me when I spoke to him nicely afterwards. Dogs, they are just lovely. I am sure the window sills will be perfect. Do enjoy love to watch your videos. Do enjoy a wonderful day, many blessings. Kind regards.
