I always try to look at the bright side of things and learn from them, specially if they're incidents. Let's go behind the scenes of my tree landing misadventure and learn what went wrong and how I could've avoided it. I'll also give you a couple of safety tips and show you what happened to the mushrooms!

Thank you very much for sharing! I also experienced a tree landing in the past. One additional lesson learned for me was, to never fly with short trousers. Some mistake during start or landing and one gets it directly on the bare skin.

You're right. That incident has also made me think about that as well.

Thanks for sharing! People can certainly be critical, which is why so many people don't have the courage to share their mistakes. Loved the analysis, very helpful.

Great video, thank you for sharing! I had a very similar event in the high alpine USA for many of the same reasons. It is so empowering to hear testimony and constructive breakdown of mistakes from high level pilots like yourself. And those mushrooms look amazing! I am looking forward to our H&F season, 2023 is going to be a glorious year of exploring, adventure and flying!

I'm always amazed that people don't look up after they get the wing over their head on forward launching ... A simple glance would have made it obvious.
@raphaeleymann

Thats also what surprised me - Even if you don't do Wingcheck on a regular basis, the Wing must've felt very different and at this point she should've taken a look before acclerating. Also she doesn't even mention that she didn't look at her Wing during launch and kind of misses the point of what she did wrong (knots can happen but should be seen during a Launch) and brings up excuses for her failures, instead of just owning the failures brushes over it and focusses on the Mushrooms. Glad shes ok anyway :-)

Thank you for sharing your experience with us - it takes a lot of courage but it's so helpful for all of us! At the end of the day it seems like the root cause of the incident is being human... we are all susceptible to these kind of things but all things considered I'd say you thought very clearly in the moment. I think it was a very smart call to fly under control straight ahead. Glad it all worked out! Thanks again.

I admire your serious, rational, and constructive outlook of an unsettling scary event. Your english language skills are also amazing. So glad that you got through without serious injury. Did you incur any expensive rescue fees for the fire brigade/helicopter teams? If so were you covered by any insurance? Thanks for posting.

Thanks for your kind words! Here in France, our social security covers for the rescue and my paragliding license includes third-party insurance and repatriation if I’m abroad. We’re pretty grateful for the health care we have!

Thank you for sharing this and how to be better prepared for something like this. I nearly crashed into a tree 3 wks ago while flying a new site near to a ridge in thailand. I am still shaken everytime I review the video. I think I got complacent because the same route had been flown many times earlier without incident. I lost height just before approaching trees and marginally got through them. In hindsight I should have flown further away from ridge to be safe.

The important hike and long mushroom collect was probably affecting your energy level (expressed in the previous video if i recall), thus a contributing factor: little bit fatigued at takeoff, maybe dehydrated?, less lucid => preflight uncomplete
@joannadigrigoli
@joannadigrigoli 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, there were definitely lots of factors that came together for this to happened. Fatigue was one of them as well. Thanks for watching!

Great that you are okay😊 Great explaination. Didn't see the cravat last time in the video. Having a phone in the sidepocket is what i always do. I don't have a first aid kit with me. But a also winder how i would reach it if it's in the back of the harness.
@joannadigrigoli
@joannadigrigoli 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was hard to see on the previous video as everything happened so fast. Regarding the first aid kit, I had inside the top pocket of my rucksack, so it was easy to reach. Maybe your harness/rucksack has top or side pockets? Thanks for watching!

Leading edge of the suspension lines After the inflation phase - at the same time as braking and stabilizing the canopy - you look up at the canopy. You check the leading edge and lines: > Are all cells open and filled? If this is not the case, pump the brake lines (> alternately quickly pulling and releasing the control lines) until the entire leading edge is open. > No knots in the suspension lines? Also in this case helps ev . Pump, otherwise the start should be aborted.❤😂🎉😢😮😅😊

So your glider + harness + reserve is 7 kg in total? (excluding other possible accessories/bags)

Yes, this setup was around 7kg including helmet, jacket, and survival kit. I never flew it with a reserve because I don’t do any thermal flying with it.

Maybe this is just my American brain, but I can't help but wonder if you had to pay the helicopter. A rescue like that in America would cost as much as my house.
@joannadigrigoli
@joannadigrigoli Жыл бұрын
No, I didn't have to pay the helicopter directly, we pay it with our taxes. Regarding how things are in America, not sure which country you're referring to. I guess things work differently from one country to the other, because I'm originally from Venezuela and helicopter rescues are non existent! Cheers!

USA. Last time I got a decent cut I needed 5 stitches. I got a bill from the hospital the emergency room was in, the emergency room itself, and the doctor in the emergency room who's nurse actually did the stitches... Total was almost three thousand dollars.

@@williamcapps6120 Getting injured in America may cost you a fortune indeed, but fortunately not in France because we pay taxes. A few ideologized Americans call taxes "robbery", in France and in Europe we just consider they are the guarantee of our quality of life. Political choices do impact people's lifes.
