What gloves do you use to fly during the winter? I always freeze my hands 😕
@joannadigrigoli2 күн бұрын
I use the Ozone Air Connect heated gloves for longer flights, but for this one I was wearing the Air Gloves, also from Ozone because it wasn't that cold and it was a short flight.

Is it easier to land with skis because you can glide out the horizontal speed, even potentially a tailwind landing? (or at least you make it look easy :p)
@joannadigrigoli2 күн бұрын
Yes, it's much easier to land with skis in zero o tailwind because if you land fast, you don't need to run fast risking a face plant :)

Thanks a lot @joannadigrigoli for this very detailled video! May I add one remark and two questions? 1. I would recommend anyone without tow experience, even an experienced pilot, to do a few practice tows at home in easy conditions.Towing is not very hard, but it feels very weird in the beginning and the gilder is not self stabilizing in its flight direction during tow. Doing your first tow in windy+gusty conditions in Brazil under pressure is a lot of avoidable stress. 2. Where does this obsession with cobra launch of the Brazil tow operators come from actually? I tried both and in gusty conditions when a gust hits in the worst moment you get pulled hard towards the wing. I prefer to get pulled straight instead of side-ways. 3. Is there no reliable tow-operation without the 250 EUR daily price tag? You would be hard pressed to find anyone charging more than 20-25 EUR per tow in Northern Europe. And sure they may need to ship the payout winch, still that is massive. You probably want to stay more than a week and not rush things. It takes time to get adjusted to special flatland conditions.
@joannadigrigoli17 күн бұрын
Hi! I'm glad you liked the video. Regarding your remark/questions: 1. That's exactly what I suggest, that pilots go with prior towing experience so they won't add another new thing. It's enough to be flying in a new place and if they also add something new like towing, things could go wrong. 2. I've also tried both techniques and what I liked about the cobra is that you're not 180 degrees from the rope. Since I carry a lot of ballast, the less footwork I do, the better. 3. Remember that the €250 also includes hotel and multiple tows, not just one. The time I decided to save some money, the operator would do everything so you wouldn't get towed again, they didn't have enough drivers/cars to spend the night out, and the winches were sketchy. Let's not even talk about the untrained tow operators that, as I found out at the end of the trip, were "training" with us, clients! So basically, I paid to be a guinea pig. So, I didn't mind paying more this time because their service was what I expected and more. You're also agreeing with me on the fact that it's better to stay more than a week. The aim of this and all of my videos is sharing my experience and what has and hasn't worked for me. I always encourage pilots to take whatever they might find useful and could work for them, never to take anything as something they must do. Thanks for your remarks and for watching!

Thanks for watching mate! I'm glad you were also able to relax and make it happen. With this film, I wanted to show the reality of flying in the Sertao and I hope it helps people understand the reality of it, so they know what to expect and not think flying there is a fairy tale.

How do you guys manage with the water etc... ? Because when it's hot I drink 6 l a day minimum , and the same amount of peeing, and I can't keep it long ....

Hi! I have a 2L water bladder in the back pocket of my harness and on flights like these I drink about half of it or more. I also have a special peeing device, so I can go as many times as I need :)

2l to drink and a 2l backup for landing out with a big walk. You're only wearing a couple of thin sleeves so it never feels that warm at base so you don't need a huge amount to drink. Great video @joannadigrigoli.

When don't you use a reserve? Isn't always better to have one, even if the conditions seem stable?
@joannadigrigoli2 ай бұрын
This is a very personal decision and I encourage everyone to make their own depending on their experience and conditions they fly in. The purpose of this video is showing what I use, I will never tell pilots what they should do. If you feel safer flying with a reserve, you should then fly with one. The reason I don't use a reserve is because I always do hike and fly in calm conditions (early in the morning, usually) and without any other gliders around. The only time I'd need one is in case of a nasty collapse and cascade (very unlikely with a low level glider, I don't fly a single surface anymore) or if I have a collision with another pilot. In my experience, launching and landing when doing hike and fly are the moments with higher risk, and that's why I wear a helmet and train a lot.

I'm the same. Check and recheck forecasts, I check it again before the take-off and observe the environment before deciding to launch. Sometimes it is a mental challenge to say no, when you really want to get into the air, and this is your only day you can do it in a while etc. etc. I've realized that: "It's better to fly tomorrow than to crash and hurt yourself / your equipment today". And there will be other good flying days.

Good stuff Joanna, this is pretty much spot on. 👍 I'd like to add that forecasts have actually despite climate change become better and more accurate and the problem comes when people misinterpret these forecasts. When it comes to isolated thunderstorms, the exact timing and place can never be predicted. A more accurate forecast in this sense only means the probablity is more accurately given, but it remains a probability and these types of isolated thunderstorms need to be judged with real time weather data and just general observation and a sense of being careful when the possibility it predicted. You are right that #1 and #2 are no contradictions, you just phrased it as one. Nice rhetorical twist.

6. When it climbs too good almost everywhere and at places where it should not at a particular time (west facing slopes in the morning) then something can be wrong too. At the end of August the weather was 'très orageux' in the Haute-Savoie and bordering Switzerland. So the flying days were short as overdevelopment happened every day between 1pm and 4pm. When in the air instead of looking for climbing air one starts to look for sinking air and blue areas. At one point it was climbing with 3 to 4m/s on north west facing ridge so early in the day that intuition rang all alarm bells: something is wrong! Heading for the landing field was the only logic option. About 40min after landing the first raindrops fell. Thunderstorms can develop so fast when instability, high humidity and sun work together. Very good points 1. to 5. 👍
@joannadigrigoli3 ай бұрын
Good 6th advice! I also apply this, when one starts climbing effortlessly, there's definitely something wrong! I had never thought about when you're climbing too well on a west face in the morning, I'll keep that in mind! Good call on landing on time 💪🏼
