This helped a lot in an unofficial Hotshot% speedrun, thanks! The speeds and distances (going 150m/s at 5km above the Sun) and the approach of burning straight at the sun once leaving Timber Hearth were great pointers after diving into the sun one too many times.

I've actually found that harder. Something weird happens with the physics inside the ship that makes it really difficult to actually exit once you're in the correct orbit. Maybe try it with the suit? If you give it a shot let me know which one you find more difficult!

@@synarion2462 to avoid that, just hold alt and move the camera in the cockpit. You will find an eject button, which makes leaving the ship much easier

Elite Dangerous with flight assist off is also fun in a similar way (especially in VR!), but they kind of ruined it by giving ships a speed limit.

Well done, I think you could save some fuel by launching off of Timber Hearth in the other direction though. If you launch retrograde to TH's orbit, the speed needed to escape TH's gravity is put into lowering your perihelion. Of course the approach would be a bit different.

That's how orbits work. See: www.rocketmime.com/space/rid_mtn.gif. As long as you're moving fast enough sideways, by the time the gravity of the sun pulls you toward itself, you're already far enough to the left that the curve of the sun has fallen away by the same amount. Or, to put it another way, if you're moving fast enough to the side you won't ever fall into the sun. Same concept that keeps all the other planets, the sun station, and the interloper from falling into the sun.

You can wedge the ship into the circular part of the warp tower, as shown in kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5_EY62HfLeCpZY . If you orient the ship the other way, you might even be able to exit, though even a slight tilt would pin you to one of the walls. There are alternative solutions.

It's very hard, I found it easiest to first orientate the ship so it is traveling in the same direction as the sun station - i.e. the sun station is traveling up the surface of the sun as I approach the top side of the Sun. Then it's a matter of trying to orbit very close to the Sun and go around a few times until you have the speed right for your height (so as not to fly off or crash into the Sun), then make minor adjustments to catch up or slow down until the sun station meets you on your path, then when close you can Match Velocity with the entry door and you're good.
