The thing that you pulled out around 8:20 is for car locks or double-sided locks in general. The lock with the blue band around the bottom and the weird-looking key appears to be a disc-detainer lock. Basically, the discs need to each be rotated into a specific position relative to one another in order for the lock to open. Since the key's cuttings are all equal depth, you just needed something that could reach through the warding (tabs of metal between each disc that prevent you from turning all the discs with a screwdriver and reverse-picking the lock), and that rake fit the lock well enough to do the job.

What the hell I swear youtube must slowly be suggesting certain videos to people because I just recently got back into the locksport hobby. Also "very difficult" when talking about master lock should never be in the same sentence. Unless its "master locks are not very difficult." You should pick up the revolver from sparrows, and a few abus padlocks from amazon. Also go get some decent picks. Sparrows makes good stuff, Southord, Peterson, and Dangerfield are all great. I recommend the Dangerfield Serenity or the Southord PXS-14 over anything from amazon. The steel they use is much better. AT THE VERY LEAST get a peterson gem and hook #1 also some more tension wrenches wouldn't hurt. Cunningham's law - "the best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a question; it's to post the wrong answer." Oddly enough that was covered in a lock picking video released this morning by bosnianbill.

@RedJyve6 жыл бұрын
Raking is where you slide a pick with ridges along it across the pin, hoping to set the pins into their unlock position quickly. This is considered a more beginner technique because it doesn't require much skill or feel for the pins. Picking, on the other hand, is where a pick is inserted into the lock and each individual pin is felt and then the pins are pushed one by one into the correct position.

Locksmith here, Very well done! you talk about how accessible lock picks are, if you get pulled over at least in USA and have the pick set in your car and are not a locksmith bad news. Besides that you did great couple little things, as I know you like learning - it's all preference as to tension and what picks you use. However some work better in some situations. Padlocks are a bit of a different experience than door locks. If you can find a simple hook pick in that set, my all time favorite and universal pick. Sometimes heavy tension is nice if you have a strong pick and slowly push the pin up you can feel the *click*. Also it's the valleys on the key not the peaks that matter. Just a heads up. but over all well done! Huge fan!
@texmexgod40025 жыл бұрын
Might be a bit late telling you Chris... here is a tip. Most important thing to note is that tension is everything. Notice the leverage of tension you put on a tumbler. The last one you accidentally were using half the wrench thus easing up the tension... unlike when you first started trying it... if you're going to use the whole length of the wrench... way less pressure. I use the technique you found.. put 1 finger on half the wrench. Another great way to figure out what is too much is use a paper clip bent at tip to insert into tumbler, the tension used to find the sweet spot should not bend the paperclip. It's very light pressure. Great video and props for accomplishing the picks.

Probably been said but the 'laminated' lock, the one that just span with the weird grooves in the key is a warded lock and doesnt have pins. The slots in the key let it turn through metal shelves (wards) inside and the mechanism is actuated only by the tip of the key turning. You can skip past all the shelves and rotate it like you did through trail and error with anything slightly hook shaped. Still impressed you got it how you did though. Also to echo what everyone else has likely said, there are two rules. 1) don't pick locks you don't own, 2) don't pick locks you rely on. It's surprisingly easy to break a lock making everything way worse, even with experience. There are lots of different types of lock! Pin tumbler, wafer, disc detainer, lever, dimple, warded etc.

You could also point out that picking one of these locks in situe is much harder than holding it in your hand or that all 5 locks are just pin tumblers with no security pins or anything. Again though, good job for a first time locker picker, very impressive

I love how he said the master lock was the hardest😂😂 If he hadn’t accidentally bypassed the second lock, it would have put up a much better fight, especially considering the size of the key way on that Abus. I guess this just goes to show how little the general population of people actually understand about lock picking. I’m not claiming to be an expert by any means, it’s just intriguing.

I have that exact same kit. It's nice. I almost exclusively use the #6 hook, to manipulate the pins one at a time (rakes never seem to work for me, except for MasterLocks). Now to learn how to break into my own car... I've found that when I try to pick, I usually put too much tension on the wrench, which locks up the pins into a bad position. I also find that I can feel the pins click over better, when I am using just the right amount of pressure. It also seems to allow the barrel to turn a fraction of an inch every time I get another pin in place, but that depends on the lock.

I've been lock picking for about a year now. Its interest to watch a new lock picker. Not to be mean because I didn't expect anyone that doesn't know much about locks to know but the lock with the funny key isn't a pin tumbler lock, so there's no pins to pick. it's called a warded lock ( you can find a good example on how they work online ) and I'm kinda surprised you opened it because you use different tools to open them just like any different kind of lock. And the master lock at the end is one of the most common locks around where I live in nova scotia, you can open them with just about anything that will fit inside and turn the core. I've even opened one with two zip ties😂 (one as a pick one as a tension wrench) BTW if you are intrested in lurning more, windshield whipper inserts and a file can make a better quality lockpick then the ones you were using.

there are many different tools you can use for each type of lock, but there are locks that ONLY prefer certain picks over others locks like warded locks tend to prefer wafer picks (the little snowman) over things like hooks or rakes, as the key pushes two bars apart, which pops the shackle standard driver pin locks prefer single pin picking or raking. single pin picking involves a hook tool (the pick that has a slight curve) pushing each individual pin above the sheer line, or the point where the lock begins to turn to open. raking involves a tool that looks like a rod with “teething” in it, which is commonly pushed in and held with more tension than single pin picking, and “raked” back and forth, and up and down. rakes tend to get more pins than single pin picks. masterlocks tend to prefer rakes and wafer picks, while other brands with unrecognizable keyways require a different set of tools you may not have. cheaper locks will always be very easy to pick open. another thing i should mention is the presence of security pins in padlocks. they’re rare, but they can happen. spool pins are a type of security pin that has the middle shaven down. when these are picked with tension, you’ll drop into something called a “false set,” which is defined by the inability to turn the bolt even after every pin has been set. trying to pick a false set leads to what’s called “counter rotation,” which is the spool pin trying to realign, which turns the bolt in the opposite direction of tension. you’ll usually feel this, and have to release some tension to clear the false set. serrated pins function primarily on false sets. they’re pins that trick you into thinking you’ve set the pin when you haven’t. if a pin clicks more than once, you’ve encountered a serrated pin. these usually require lots of patience and careful listening. sorry for the bible-length description, hope this helps!
@paranixan Жыл бұрын
i should also mention that it’s very hard to rake security pins without breaking your tools. these pins should be single pin picked only so you don’t run the risk of breaking what you’re using. 😊

The fact that you could pick a security pin, on your 1st time ever picking locks is amazing. Great job. I've been doing it for a year and still have trouble on those.

I like you Chris. I watch all your magic stuff and think how cool it would be to do that stuff so clean like you do. So don't take this the wrong way. None of those locks are locks. They're basically subtle suggestions that you aren't supposed to open the thing that they are attached to. I actually (actually!), and I'm not proud of this, shot a little nasty out my nose when you had a Master lock at the "hard" end of that stack. I know, you're thinking, "but this was the first time I ever picked a lock." Still too easy. I've had small children picking harder locks for their first. You can literally, as you did, accidentally pick those. All that said, I found this because I was going to suggest you start playing with lock picking. I thought it would be a hobby right up your alley. Do more of it. Shoot video of that. Put it on youtube. I think you could be a youtuber bro, really.
