I think the key to successfully drawing anime is knowing what to simplify and what to keep realistic! Faces, arms and legs are simplified or stylized and depending on the anime style the proportions are semi realistic.

Anime characters are created after cats, not humans? The nose, eyes and shape of the face should be more like cats.. That helps a lot when starting to draw that style.
