skating is one of the things that i never feel good about where i’m at progress wise. but looking back, the me 5 years ago would have never thought i’d be doing some of the tricks i’ve done. if anyone is thinking about picking up a skateboard after this, DO IT!! its helped my confidence, mental health, and social anxiety in a way i didn’t expect. from having to get over mental blocks, to having a creative outlet, to being forced to talk to other skaters at the park. much love🖤

I like his videos but why do people on youtube act like they owe something to these creators. When you say he deserves to make variety content and still be financially sustainable... do you see his backyard in this video? Do you see the expensive guitars on his walls? You can easily look up approximately how much youtubers make and I'm pretty sure Kevin is like 30k a month atleast. And no people don't deserve to be financially sustainable just because you are in a parasocial relationship with them. Make content people like = more money. Its really that simple.

My fiancé skateboards, and I always thought "oh I could do this, seems easy enough". Then I tried standing on it. Nope. I totally get what you felt, it is terrifying and feels unnatural, you can be proud of yourself for trying and pushing despite being uncomfortable. It's also great to see Anna being so supportive of you ! I just started rollerblading and can definitely relate. Going out in public, with the protective gear and seeing kids pass you by being 100% better than you is humbling and really anxiety inducing. It's hard starting something as an adult, and having to be bad in front of others. Some days it makes me want to not practice because I'm just too embarassed, but eh, we all start somewhere :)

I skateboarded when I was a child, stopped in my teenage years, grew up, had a wife and kids, then started skateboarding with my cousin that moved back here to California after moving to Portland 15 years ago. We hangout all the time and he got me back into skateboarding, we're both learning. Every day is progress, I have only been skating again for 2 months but I can do more than I ever was able to do as a kid, incan basically drop in at skateparks now, hit transfers and big banks and it makes me feel like a kid again, I progress everytime I'm out there, all it takes is practice and not being afraid to fall, I stay padded up!

As an old, battered vert skater, I enjoyed the hell out of this. Going from zero to even thinking about dropping in after only a few days is impressive. You nearly had it too, except for that *slight* hesitation where your brain went "No!" and made you lean back, pulling the board back up fractionally. I reckon you'd have made it otherwise. Though you ticked the all-important experience box marked 'fall on your hip and feel like your leg is made of jelly'. There were good chuckles in the video, but I swear I spent more time going "Yay, you did the thing!" Damn. I might have to start skating again. Nice work!

Never got to the point of dropping in on a board (didn't really vibe with skating), but the first drop in on my BMX on a skate park was terrifying as well, even though for several years before that i went to the local 4cross tracks (only moved to the park after the city cut down the entire forest where both it and the DJ track were) and used the starting ramp. The most important thing is to commit even though your brain is screaming otherwise. And hey, might even pick skateboarding up again because i moved to a different city with my bike still at my parents house because i don't have room in my apartment for it (plus i live on the 5th floor with no elevator so it'd be a pain anyway)

As someone that has been skating for 20 years i recommend you learn to fall. Sounds counterintuitive but when you can get over that fear the rest will come easy. I used to teach skateboarding and although i know you probably wont see this if you have any questions dont be afraid to ask. Keep skateboarding! its like working out or learning guitar. Progress can be very slow but everything is progress in the grand scheme of things.

Best place to learn how to fall? Pro wrestling school. My friend was actually trained by Johnny Gargano in Cleveland, and my friend is much skinner and brittle than Kevin. I wanna see Kevin's next adventure be pro wrestling. LOL.

as someone who has skated in his life, I know exactly how hard it is and every little accomplishment feels like something huge and you should be very proud of it. seeing you so happy learning things and accomplishing your first trick, which is everyone's first trick so don't feel bad about it, made me feel so happy for you. also homegirl being super supportive about everything was really amazing to see. a piece of advice I'd give is that you can always get fully confident riding it but you'll never completely get over the fear of falling until you take a really hard slam to show your body and brain that even if you'll slam you'll be okay, just gotta get back up and brush it off take a break if you need to and keep working at it. love you Kevin, this was awesome

@@Nefariously_ignorant alright uzzo here we go! bowl scum is kinda self explanatory but its also kinda a wide field in its own as pool skating, wooden bowls at indoors or backyards, DIYs and the strong and valuable communitys that are necessary for them (this applies to street too), park style bowls but just us cunts that love carving a bowl (sometimes i could give an uck less bout anything but the most basic grinds i just wanna go fast. street rats cos street skaters are harder to get rid of than rats, filthier, shit in public, sleep in ya mums or mates or dads back room, eat food that should be enough to kill ya standard human, anything is skatable if you look at it long enough thats ya street skaters and an ATV is the lucky few the dirty peasants that are bowl scum and street rats wish they were, n thats and All Terrain Vehicle, which is just like a mega robot of a street skater and pool skater mashed together. John Cardiel is the best to ever do it,go watch his Cash Money Vagrant video, then watch it when you wake up every day until you die, and say how can i be not just the best at what i do but how can i love it to a degree im not even aware of my skill level, im too busy being happy (and apply that to everything not just skating) Tweeked is when you add style to a grab trick through putting pressure on the board with your feet in different ways and places while changing your hand position in certain ways sometimes too. A crossbone is a trick thats basically a tweeked Lien Air (what a lot pf people would call a frontside nosegrab) A channel gap is when theres a roll in to a piece of transition (curvy stuff like halfpipes and bowls and just saying it gets me revved up; pools) and that roll in creates a gap in the coping of the transition, so to gap the channel would be to air from where the coping ends to where the coping starts again and anything wider than that I come from Perth WA, most people who arent 100% nothing but skateboarder refer tricks by the names of them in video games like tony hawks pro skater, but im a disciple of Jake Phelps and Jeff Grosso, and other old grumpy sore men who know their wisdom is priceless, despite also being worthless, young souls in old bodies that were old souls in young bodies once. I dunno the terms mean nothing n dont matter, i talk the "proper" terms and names but what i was even getting at was who gives an uck, if you got a grin on ya face, if you arent thinkin about money or work or a crippling opiate addiction during a sober stage when ya cruisin around on a board, you are a skater uck the rest uck you uck anyone that snakes me i hate uckin all of you on 4 wheels and youre the most beautiful people ive ever loved, thanks for having me skateboarders and skateboarding

Nobody is perfect straight away, anytime you see somebody being able to do something well right away it is usually because they are transferring a skill they already have to a similar platform. For example balance is key to alot of sports so somebody that has practiced balancing can usually get a bit of a head start when learning a new sport.

Kevin, this has to be one of your best videos to date, no offence to your other videos. The editing, the cinematography, the banter, all of it was chef's kiss. It was so nice to see Anna being so supportive of you, too! I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. Like many commenters have stated, it's all about confidence. "YOU *WILL* FALL" is the most profound piece of advice I got when I started skating as a teenager. I learned skateboarding wasn't for me, and since then I've graduated to roller-skates (imagine having skateboards attached to your feet!!!! AHHH) and that advice I got while skateboarding still rings true. It feels a lot like life: you are bound to fall and you *will* get back up again. Nah, the best moments are when you bust your ass. That way, the regulars get to watch as you gain skill and improve, and they get to feel like proud mamas watching their kid succeed at something. I think I felt one of my greatest senses of pride when I saw a very overweight man ride a bike uphill. The mad lad had a massive smile on his face and looked so excited to be biking, even though he looked like he was about to die XD I can’t explain it, but I felt such a sense of pride and support for him well up in me. I was so tempted to pull over and cheer him on as he enjoyed his bike ride that was obviously a challenge and let him know how encouraging he looked. I was worried I’d sound condescending though, so sadly I could not cheer on that mad lad of a man. He got me back into hiking though, because it was oddly encouraging to him him trying so hard and doing it with a smile. *Strong man right there.*

I tried teaching myself how to skate in high school and it really is so scary and difficult if you haven’t done it before. I gave it a good two weeks but, like you, I was so uneasy and so self conscious every time I tried to practice. I ended up giving up lol. This video kinda made me think: I had a skateboard when I was a kid and did what Kevin's mate advised - just get on and do it... But I really didn't care about falling off when I was a kid, not even onto the concrete at high speed. Now I'm an adult. I care about falling off A LOT. My bones aren't as bouncy as they used to be. Falling over seems to hurt in a way young me never thought possible! I'm certain that if I tried to take up skateboarding now, I'd be petrified. You're a brave guy to attempt this in a week Kevin. Loved the video.

So I keep thinking about this video. Like a lot. It lives in my head rent-free. And now all-of-a-sudden, I’m looking into purchasing longboards and researching gear. I’ve never been interested in skateboarding at all, but watching this video got me addicted to the idea of trying out a longboard just for casual riding. I’m not sporty or outdoorsy, and this is a big change for me that I’m looking forward to. Thanks, man! I hope you do more content about going out of your comfort zone to try new things. I really enjoyed this video! Watching you learn and succeed was so satisfying, and I'm really happy that even though you don't necessarily want to continue doing tricks on the skateboard, you were still able to get something out of this experience! For years, I've wanted to be able to cruise around on a skateboard or longboard, but I've always been terrified of failing. Watching you and seeing how you were able to identify and tackle small steps was really encouraging. I hope you make more content like this in the future, Kevin! as someone who has skated for over 10 years, it’s really impressive how far you came in just a week kevin! i’ve taught quite a few people how to get the very basics of skating and your progress was super good especially without having someone there to help you out. if you end up wanting to dive more into tricks i guarantee you there would be people at the skatepark that would be more than happy to help out!!! the skate community is one of the friendliest groups of people i’ve ever been around. have fun skating and i really enjoyed seeing a video of you just trying something you’re interested in! 👏🏼👍🏼

i actually really enjoyed this, honestly skating or rolerblading/rollerskating is so hard, the falls hurt like hell, and there can be injuries, but honestly once you have fallen a few times, you are ready to move on to the next step, it does get easier, keep up the great work Kevin :)

This is my first time commenting though I have seen quite a few of your videos. I love watching people learn how to roller skate and watching you learn how to skateboard gave me the same happiness. Absolutely loved to see the progress! It also made me want to get back on my roller skates too. This was really nice and I am glad you found a way to do something you were interested in and not give up your channel. The fact that you got back up after falling and continued to work at it, is actually a testament to your willpower and courage...nothing in this life is easy, but it takes people who don't give up, who don't give in...to make a difference in theirs and others lives. You already do that with your KZbin channel for others, it's good to see you're finally doing more for yourself and it's inspiring, I'm so happy for you. I have a fear of heights, but back in junior high (even though that's been ages, I never forgot that 4H trip) I climbed a 15 foot high climbing tower and then repelled down it (both ways were scary as shit)...I tried facing that fear and though I'm still pretty scared of heights...I am very glad I had the courage to try. Now facing my fear of sharks, heh that'll never ever ever ever happen. LOL

Relatable. As a fellow getting old person I can recognize how one is much stronger reminded of one's mortality. Not just that, one has become frail, things now break and we know that when they do they may not heal up so good. When it comes to skateboarding I skateboarded as a kid and getting back to it as I am older I got a lot for free. However, having tried snowboarding and skiing only later in life the learning process and fear was very much like what you experienced and shared with us. Stay safe :)

Hey Kevin! I've been a fan for 5+ years and I have to say, it's stuff like this and the update vid from yesterday which keep me wanting to come back even through all the iterations and modulations you as a human and CMK as a channel have navigated over those years. I think there's this expectation that an entertainer fulfills a specific role in the public eye, and as long as that entertainer remains in the public eye, that role must remain static throughout their entire career. Fortunately, someone who is true to their art and who meditates on themselves and their relationship with that artform so as to preserve their integrity as a human and as a creator will still be fundamentally "real" despite all the changes and alterations that life might impose upon them. I liken it to a really good band - as a fan I might hate a new album when it drops at first, because it's not what I expect from all my previous experience with the group. However, the more I listen back to the new record, the little fragments of personhood and artistry still show up in all the same places despite the change of scenery, so long as the artist took to that new direction with the same vigor and boldness as they had before. All this is to say, you keep doing you man, and most of all do what is healthy for yourself and your own. Just browsing the comments here shows you got some crazy people all rooting for ya that don't look to be going anywhere.

Love the video Kevin. As a skater the only real tip I can I give you is to just keep trying and getting comfortable on the board. And practicing on the grass or carpet first is great for getting used to stuff. Especially when you graduate to trying ollies. And BTW, im impressed you tried to drop in on the ramp after just a week. Took me weeks before I got the courage for that when I first started. And falling on your ass is all part of the learning curve. Once you fall a few times you'll get past that mental block and start to lose the fear of trying new stuff.

Half year ago I tried to learn to rollerskate and learned a bit, but then i fell and dislocated my finger.
