I have almost a similar story, I went to university with the intention to be an accountant. I changed my major to Information Systems in my second year, this was back in 2005 when IT was not even a thing. My parents were so angry and didn’t understand my decision and I honestly also didn’t know what I was getting myself into at that time.I am now looking back and thanking myself for trusting in my intuition. I am a successful black woman in tech, earning a comfortable salary. Thank you Bonnie for your content ❤.

10 years ago I made the decision to switch from 3rd year accounting to IT. It was the best decision I ever made in my life. From then I never looked back.

How did you do that? Did you start afresh or you did a bridging course?

There are many ways and it depends on what you intend to do in IT. My first and second year modules were almost the same between the Accounting and IT degree. There were 2 additional modules I needed to do. It did set me back 1 year. But that's not an issue. I worked part time during my university days. So this just meant me working more days and earning more money. If you already studied and now want to jump, there are bridging courses that you can do online and write international exams which open doors but they are hard to do. Dedication is key. I highly recommend if you are a new graduate, do an internship and work your way up. This way you gain experience learning in the job and being taught by someone since all companies need people with experience.

@@ntsakobaloyi3637 You are on the right track 🔥🔥🔥 however whilst a degree is important to some extend the journey to solutions architecture is more on extensive industry experience (can't stress that enough, the more projects you do the more you'll have added advantage) In addition try to expand on getting globally recognised IT certification in your chosen speciality for e.g. AWS, Google Cloud etc. this will set you apart globally not forgetting a postgrad that focuses on systems architecture (some global companies prefer that, e.g. MBA or MSc) Polish your CV to global standard, be present & visible on LinkedIn. The world is your oyster 🦪🙏🏽

Like Anele, I discovered my passion for tech, but the calling only came after completing my Bachelor's in Business Science in Accounting. Post-university, I taught myself software development and other tech. I've always been inclined to build systems that provide efficient solutions. With my business acumen, I'm able to develop effective business tech solutions. Thus far, I haven't found anyone whose pursuits and aspirations align as closely with mine. Hearing from someone else who also aspired to be a CA and then changed their path because they did it for themselves is incredibly affirming. Thank you for this great interview!

30:26 Mostly qualified electrical engineers branch into IT because; 1. Have done some programming in varsity and are good at it 2. Vast demand for tech workforce thus leading companies to not only accept people with tech degrees like CompSci, IT, IS 3. Thus, you have a better chance progressing as a tech person than a traditional engineer

I got an accounting diploma in UJ and I didn’t really enjoy it - it took me 5 years to complete that 3 year diploma cause I really didn’t like it and therefore couldn’t get myself to commit to my studies, but I pushed to complete my studies, because I didn’t want to drop out. I applied for an advanced diploma, got Accepted, but ended not registering. 😢 I feel so stuck because I don’t think I know where my passions lie. I always thought of giving IT a try. It’s been something I’ve been thinking about for years, but I am yet to do my research and see what exactly in IT i would like to do how to succeed in that career. Does anyone know where I can start doing research on IT?
