I work for Delta Airlines and into my 23rd years with them. Profit sharing is superb. Top to bottom communication excellent. Only problem is old aircraft and no longer has B777. Mainly A330-NEO, A350-900 and B767-400 while domestic is mainly A321, A320, B757 and B737.

I was on the A380 for 5 years, was fired during covid because I broke my leg (sick days) they asked me back I went, flew for a while then I quit when I found a job in the west. Your reasons are spot on specially the 6th. The corporate culture there is all about punishment, you are a number easily discarded, as shown during Covid; 1600 pilots gone, mainly on the A380 fleet, no seniority based to let go of pilots, AI spit the staff numbers with their reasons and weights and they got the names to fire, 3 months to get out of the country during the pandemic, guys with 15 years as well as guys with 5months in the company, people with sick days treating sickness, all in the mix. The company practices the opposite of what is a "Just Culture", you feel you fly with a gun to your head, any slips in the sim or the line your upgrade might be compromised or if you are a captain you can be demoted to FO depending on the circumstances. Go read on pprune whats all about EK and their treatment of pilots and cabin crew. They pay well but it comes with a hefty price! Its a great experience if you want to go, you'll definitely come out a better aviator, but have a way out, a plan with your family, dont get caught up with the "golden handcuffs". Its not a long term job anymore. Pilots beware!

Thanks for the Video Caner. I worked for Emirates for over 13 years as a 777 Captain and was going onto the A380 in January 2020 when Covid hit in March 2020. I was then told that I will be put back onto the 777 in April 2020, so wasted all those months getting that 380 technical, which is considerably harder than anything I’ve ever flown I might add. BUT Unfortunately I received the dreaded Text saying to come into the training center the following day in June 2020!! I was neither a 777 Capt or a 380 Capt so me and 17 other guys that were in the same position were Fired for UnKnown Reasons. They have never released the exact amount of Employees that were let go due Covid. Only Rumors galore. I believe it was Sick Leave for me as I had a few Long Term Sick for Skin Cancer a few years back and I was on the “Watch List” BUT No One will ever know definitely. Your many points were spot on to my thoughts for many years about the lack of correspondence from management even to the point of abstract LIES were told point blank to our faces during the famous Wash Up Meetings of pilots after Ground School……..Removal of the Seniority List was a HUGE one for me that really showed me that these guys were up to no good. The Banning of PPRUNE from the Internet was another Bombshell!! I’m working for a small growing Airline in the USA now in South Florida as I thankfully had a GreenCard since 2011 and am much better physically (even though I kept myself in Top Fitness in DubaI) BUT the constant Circadian Rhythm disturbances were beginning to take its toll on my body as I was getting older. Maybe it was my destiny and getting fired saved my life?? I can honestly say that EK definitely made me a much better Aviator,even though my previous airline from my home country(After 20 years there flying MD-83 & B737-800NG) had VERY High standards, EK made me a much better Manager/Capt and to use my resources to the Mission’s advantage. Hope it works out for you and yes, getting into a MAjor airline in the US at your earliest opportunity is a great idea.

I was suppose to retire in the USA after Emirates was my plan as pre Covid, the USA Pilot scene was definitely not was it is now and even just after 2008 it was downright terrible. So I stayed at EK thru the terrible 2010-2018 years of 900hrs per year and crossing many many time zones. I was thinking of leaving in 2017-2018 but things didn’t work out and thankfully 2019 EK reduced the flying on the 777 and it made a world of difference, so I closed my eyes and decided to stay until 65 at EK. Unfortunately fate had other plans for me! 🤷🏻‍♂️👍🏻

Knowing other airline pilots or former pilots I certainly understand your position. One pilot I know used to fly a lot of red eye flights. As someone, who also worked nights for many years I know the challenge of working those hours. It is not easy to keep flip flopping your hours. Certainly it would be good to see oneself evolving out those bad flights. While the pay and benefits maybe good one also has to have a life. Many pilots here in the USA abandon their dream as a pilot once they see how it is as well. Good luck on your quest.

USA… Worked hard and sacrificed literally living on penny and dimes to get my flight instructors and continue as a flight instructor to accumulate flight hours .. 3 years later (still literally living on 1200 a month pay secured a job as freighter pilot on Cesna 208 caravan than up it to metro liner 4 and then gulf steam 2 .. however in those 5-6 years literally had no savings .. sounded good to everyone that I was flying here there and everywhere and always felt like a superstar amongst friends and family but the lifestyle became tooo lonely different hotels airports and a lot of jumpseats to get home or fly to your aircraft .. and still the lay sucked … felt super burnt out .. no family dating life sucked … and then after having a divorce with the love of my life .. was never around .. but that’s the only time you make money when you flying… … went into depression .. felt more lonely flying those crazy hours at night time and continuously thinking that how my life would be different if I was just at one place and not traveling all the time … the moment the company cut the pay .. they stopped paying g for the hotels .. I QUIT .. the best decision. I ever made … dating life got better .. depression went away .. hot remarried .. 2 lovely kids .. and to see and be with my family and kids every moment is worth leaving the airline industry … it is defiantly definitely not everyone’s cup of tea

I am glad you chose to come to the US and fly. I also agree with everything you have said. I am 82 and retired when Braniff Airlines filed for bankruptcy. I continued to fly but not professionally. I want to thank you for your insights, Caner. You do a great job for the community! I am presently flying short/medium range flights with more or less no night flights. Before that, it was longe range flying for about nine years. I could not have described it more appropriately than you did when you said that you are a zombie after those night duties. I’m currently a Flight Attendant and an aspiring pilot. It’s not where I want to be but it was a way to get my foot in the door. I agree with you Caner. Night flights are the absolute worst and reek havoc on your body. A single leg red eye flight isn’t bad. However, a redeye turn will absolutely wreck you. I have come home from redeye turns in the morning and felt barely alive, with absolutely no energy for the next day. I’ve heard of stories of crew members being injured or killed on the drive home because of fatigue.

Yes Danial, you are right. As a pilot, nights flights are inevitable. This is the nature of our job. However, we have some tools and mitigation strategies to overcome this problem. At the end of the day, It's not great to walk like zombie each day :)

Registered Nurse of 4 decades here. Working nights in my profession also wreaks havoc on one's body and sleep deprivation causes actual cumulative physical bodily harm . A colleague of mine was in a serious car crash driving home at 8am in the morning following a 12 hour night shift in the intensive care unit.

Very clear eyed view from a young man representing himself. This thinking should be taught in schools everywhere. I am 76 years old, worked up through the IT ranks, which are not seniority driven in the US and would advise everyone who works to represent themselves with such a clear view that Caner uses. Seniority, meaning represented by a union or government job, is no picnic either. Your choices are severely limited by that seniority system. I chose to leave a union job and represent myself early in my career and loved my jobs at many different companies.

Honestly was sad to see you resign from Emirates, it's such a great airline but all your reasons are extremely valid, especially the 6th. It's still my dream to fly for Emirates (or Air Canada), but with this video I'll have a clear idea of what to expect going into Emirates later in the future. Like you said there's no perfect airline so I'll just have to accept the good with the bad. Being a pilot is a great and rewarding career. Everyone has reasons to leave one airline for another. I think you will be very happy working for airlines in the United States. All of the airlines in this country are seniority driven. Promotions,routes, scheduling,vacations etc. Most airlines offer competitive salaries and benefits. Obviously, the larger airlines like United,American,Delta and Southwest offer the best packages for new employees. JetBlue is also another great airline to consider. You could easily make the transition from flying the Boeing 777 to an all Airbus fleet with some additional training . I. believe this is the best time to apply for a position due to the shortage of qualified pilots. I wish you the best of luck in finding a job with a US carrier!

As a pilot, we need to optimize our work balance, health, and time away from home. That's at least what I think.

EK rosters run on minimum rest and more importantly take no account of ciradian rhythm. Fly DXB-SIN then DXB-DUB and then deep night DXB-NRT. The constant east-west shifts are what generate fatigue. It doesn't have to be that way. The system can minimise these East-West flipping.

Does this imply that if you fly a plane to a certain destination then 99% of the time you are flying that same route back to home base the following day? Can you recommend any good books about pilot lives and schedules in commercial airlines? Air Canada does one flight a week to Costa Rica during low season and the return flight is the next day. That’s where I first realized the exact same crew is flying the same plane back. 😢

Caner, with your words I'm shocked. From a passenger perspective, it is a great airline, but I agree from the Pilot's point of view, it is a nightmare. You cannot make long-term goals when the job is not secured. A lot of my Emirati pilots told me about this and even my cabin crew friends, from the last 1 month I had observed through flightradar24 that all the Gulf carriers, and their operations to the eastern side of the world are after midnight. That's absolutely terrible. Once I had always dreamed of flying for Gulf carriers but now I would like to avoid flying for them. I hope they will rectify the circumstances positively and provide pilots a good platform.

Everyone is different and priorities are different for each individual. I never classify my night flights as nightmares or terrible. It’s the nature of our job. That being said, they are tiring. My friend- I listened to your concerns,, some of them make perfect sense , especially when they change an agreed contract, you have 100% right to be upset. You made a perfect statement when you said that today I am young , and can produce, because you are young and energetic, but 20 years down, things are totally different. As an ex Emirates cabin crew of 6 years and now looking to pursue a pilot job i totally understood the indian flights hate lol. Ill never forget those 3am take off flights (2 hrs before show up for briefing) then landing at 1pm in DXB. It were the only flights where i didn't know where i was after coming back, my body and mind were destroyed😅. Aint as easy as people assume. Even though I know how EK operates, i am looking towards United. It just seems like a more established employee system.

Heh, I might be a bit of an oddity then. Not a pilot or cabin crew but ground crew and I have no difficulty with night shifts. Morning, afternoon, evening, night… after a day or two of adjustment my body doesn’t seem to care. That being said constantly changing shifts messes up even my body and it’s not a great feeling.

I am not a pilot but i found it interesting. Talking of sleep issues. My husband is in mining. He flys to work for 2 weeks and home for a week. Been doing it for 18 years. He flys into work after a 3 hour flight straight into night shift. Does 7 nights straight of 12 hrs per day. Finishes work at 6am. Then 6am the next day does a week of 12 hr day shift. Dont know how he does it but loves it. I dont know how pilots and cabin crew do it. I fly Australia to Europe. Nights sleep good to go. Flying back to Aus can never sleep and can take upto 2 weeks for my sleep to return to nornal. Hope you got a start in USA.

I fly for a different carrier that allows us to go on unpaid leave for as long as we want. This is the only way I would work for that airline, because I know I can always go back to my airline whenever I feel like it, so not only if I get fired but even if I’m not happy with anything I can tell them to f right off. It’s a great experience but working there relying on their contract would take a huge toll on my mental health.

Canar, first of all, congrats for having the courage to resign and as well as making this video to show the bull***t that goes on at EK. I, as well, resigned and am not living in fear anymore. You forgot to mention the “fear factor” in your video, even though management and training says that it doesn’t exist!!! Bahahaha! Resigning was the best thing that I could have done! The closet I came to be associated with an airline is being a passenger. This does not make me being ignorant of the issues any employee has with their employer. The lack of communication of any management from the top to the bottom is not acceptable or forgivable. This make it difficult for employees to see the direction the company is heading and how they can assist. Your are right in saying that an employment contract is exactly that, a contract which is legal bound; any change/s must be agreed upon by both parties - employer and employee. Anyway Caner, I wish you all the best in your future; be it in the US or anywhere else.

I believe it is quite brave from you to speak out so clearly, why the middle eastern airlines are not only shiny, but have deep issues internaly. I had my fair chance of looking into one of them. The blame mentaltity is exactly where the aviation safety culture should not go, and yet there it does. Pointing fingers at the one to blame only takes the responsability from the managers to really look into thier system to find the root cause, which most probably lies within their doings. Tense and tired pilots make bad pilot in my experience. Have been flying for 35 years and still love my job. All the best for your future, hope it turns out the way you imagine.

Liked your communication and respect your views. We are passengers who look for safe landing and comfortable travel because we pay lot of money to travel. Coming week I am traveling from Mumbai to San Francisco by Emirates. Mumbai-Dubai-SFO. Couple of months before I had travelled same route & same airline. Now I understand there is direct flight by Air India from Mumbai-SFO. I wish this would be helpful better than Emirates.

This is UAE. no matter what job you do whether it is pilot, driver, sales, or even manager in 99.9% company will never ask about your concern, they can fire you anytime, and some companies may even cancel the visa.. so no wonder...I lived there for almost 5 years working as a cabin crew for another local airline. Luckily that was before covid, I resigned just on time 😆😆😆😆😆😆

Risk is always proportional to reward. Your points , especially the last one, is the reason why your salary/take home salary is higher. If they had unions etc, then the risk will be lower and therefore the salary.

It's so interesting to hear about the culture in the airline, the lack of communication and the negativity from above. I really expected they would have a strong culture of emotional intelligence for such a prestigious company. I work with dozens of large Fortune 500 companies and almost all of them put great emphasis on both IQ and EQ and this is a major focus of leadership training. It is not just the decent thing to do but this culture helps them retain their very best talent. I guess when it comes to an airline and a place that has a queue of people lining up to join they just don't care about that. When flying with Emirates I must say this matches my experience with some of their very obnoxious cabin crew who clearly think they are too hot to be serving tea and coffee. EK has a highly accomplished president and has done a great job but I often wonder when I watch his interviews about the excessive hubris on display or is it just confidence?

And Your seniority ranking ~9xx at EK, is that ranking based on only FOs who are you qualified for Captain? Or generic ranking of all FOs.

This really is a breath of fresh air and very courageous. You listed the cons but also the pros! In my experience the hub and spoke model has a price. and we as pilots and cabin crew are picking up the tab. Some of my friends who fly at emirates talked me out of joining them exactly because of these reasons. i would like to follow in your footsteps so Do you have any tips to join a mainline us airline as a european citizen? all the best!

Huge minus , in US I’ll be paying taxes , up to 45%. In Arab countries I know there is 0% tax for income (like UAE). Imagine in US from your 250,000$ you get paid around 150k , that sucks. The only way to avoid that much taxes in US is if you’re be located in states like Florida where there is also 0% in income tax (just the federal)

Well, this is another perspective however don’t forget if you are American Citizen or green card holder, your income is taxable after certain threshold. Namely, If you are a captain in Emirates, you need to pay tax to the US even if you work in tax free country. Also, I strongly believe that they will introduce the income tax in UAE in the future

Of course nobody likes night flights, but I can still feel the fear and being very politicaly correct talking about emirates while being more rude with TK. When you fly for a seniority driven airline you still get your holiday when you want them when it's your turn. Anyway thanks for the good overall feedback. I am not a big fan of the USA unfortunately , the country is way too violent , the food culture and natural product are not up to level etc. But working conditions are the best

Hey Ben, I love Turkish Airlines a lot. It’s my country’s flag carrier. I don’t think that I was Rude to them but definitely, from a Pilot perspective, they lack tools for the Pilot lifestyle. I don’t have any fear of anyone:) If I had, I wouldn’t share any videos :) There is no single pilot out there recording anything about Emirates but me. Thanks for the nice comments. Very interesting video. I think the US airlines' seniority systems must go back a long way. In Ernest K Gann's book Fate is the Hunter he talks about this when he was flying DC2's, DC3's, and DC4's etc. So a very long time ago! Gann said there was one new captain who'd go back to the cabin & talk with passengers in the hope they would fly more and encourage their friends to fly more. But because of economic problems that captain finished up as a co-pilot again. And if an airline went broke a captain with a seniority number of #1 and 20000 hours would only get a co-pilot job at another airline. This actually happened to Gann as well.

I resigned from BA for similar reasons. 1 Personal because I did not like being posted to other bases, which would have gone on through my career. 2 Like you management were not listening. 3. We were frozen on type for 6 years, regardless of seniority. I later worked for a small airline operating a B737-300 on contract to a bigger airline. We had just 5 crews, mostly ex-BA TRE and we operated that aircraft 24/7 - boss(ex-Manager BA Germany) was delighted and paid us well. I had 500 hours as a turbo-prop Captain and converted to B737 as First Officer. After 4 months those TREs had converted me to Captain - their work, not mine. Only airline where I worked for which I had respect for the management. Caner, you briefly spoke about academic studies. I studied law in my spare time and ended up practising Aviation Law in a City of London firm. There I had more respect and control over my private life. Good luck with your career
