I moved to Thailand from America around the same time as Paul. I’ve done a few trips here before I settled on Thailand. The cost of living in Bangkok is a bit higher than the rest of Thailand but very doable. Especially if you have income from abroad. My advice is if you get the chance to live outside the US, even for a bit, take it and see what else is out there. Bring that new perspective home.

I am a Thai-born Thai-American. I love my home country and I will be moving back next year! A topic of concern is air quality. I know many pollutants are in the air and it affects people's skin. Other than that, I will have to be disciplined with eating because there are numerous food options which means an increased risk for diabetes, obesity, and cancer if I don't control my eating habits :)

Congrats to Paul for making the decision that is best for him. I was born in Thailand, but grew up in the States and currently live and work in California. Aside from the year-round heat and horrible traffic, Thailand is a great Asian city with lost of places to go and amazing food. You'll never be bored in Thailand. And of course, it's way more affordable than the states. Maybe when I get closer to retirement, I might follow Paul's path and maybe consider living there part-time. It's just going to continue to become more expensive to live in California.

I lived in Kuala Lumpur for 3 years and Jakarta for 2 2010-2015 best thing I ever did. I did not miss the USA when I lived in Asia. I made so many friends that I still talk with today. I guess the point is he was relatively rich in both NYC earning $400k and in Bangkok earning $150k, but he still prefers Bangkok. The point is not really living a simple life, but rather that Bangkok itself is more magical for people who grew up in the West. It's just a more fun experience to be thrown into something completely new. So he enjoys his lifestyle in Bangkok more than the US. He's not the only one, Bangkok is the most visited city on earth for a reason. It's just more lively and more fun. Western society is much more rigid and conservative in comparison. For example you're not going to see street stalls everywhere, people drinking on the streets, partying everywhere, water fights across the entire city etc. Bangkok (and most big Asian cities in general) is just way more chaotic and wilder than any Western city.

This is the type of thing I support. Going where things work for you. This guy found the place that works for him, and many people in the comments echo his sentiment. I'm happy for them. I also love that everyone is different, and I can live in the north central US, where COL is low, the landscape is subtly pretty, and car infrastructure is widespread (I enjoy driving). I'm someone who appreciates geographic diversity, and the northern plains is perfect for me, specifically on America's population divide, where I can go east towards the many large cities of the upper midwest, but also west, and be in the mountains in less than 5 hours. I love snow and the cold, and could never live in the south. This is far from everyone's perfect reality, some want large cities with more job opportunities, while others want small towns where they know everyone and have a higher degree of privacy and control over who they interact with. Also, some people never want to deal with snow, while some think it's the only thing that makes winter fun. I think the ability to move somewhere that you like is one of the most straightforward ways to deal with many problems, and I think a lot of people know what they want, but they know less on where they can find that stuff. Keep traveling people, you might find your favorite place, even if you think you already found it.

The supermarket he went to is not cheap at all and locals do not not shop there often. Gourmet Market is mostly high end and stocks a lot of foreign imported goods. Big C and Tops are where the masses go to.
