@@typicalbits I'm not a designer, but am at Facebook. Keep in mind that big companies like Facebook, Google, etc are big and highly desired for a reason. They get thousands of applications a week, and they're able to cherry pick the best of the best. Not saying it's impossible, but it's highly unlikely a Hiring Manager will want to hire someone that is fresh out of school with little to no job experience. And depending on the position, have little to no side projects (personal and/or school) to help them. Not trying to be negative, but it's reality. Just focus on building experience, and then apply or get a referral some years later. These companies will still be here in the future anyways.

WOW! This is such a genuine and to-the-point video from a young professional. I am an HR and I wanna tell you that what you have described is very typical to large organizations. Also, managers won't let inexperienced candidates express their wishes nor add a blueprint to the whole work just because you are a promising employee that hasn't proved anything yet. Working for such big corporations requires certain types of employees to thrive there and it will save a lot of time thinking over what possibly went wrong and should an employee regret leaving such a "fantastic" company is to remember ONE SIZE DOESN"T FIT all. It's great you realized it just after 3 months and your previous employer was happy to have you back. This is rare! Looking 4ward to your next videos, I share your vision. By the way, talking to HRBPs is not the best decision when you need help with your new job. in 90% of the time (unless there's NO obvious breach of law), they won't side with you. Rather, they will work on getting rid of employees who don't share corporations' values from the beginning in the safest way to avoid legal risks.

Its nice to see how supportive your viewers are. If only people were like this in real life. Where I'm from, if someone announces that they left a big company, people give this ugly look 🤨. Everyone starts asking nosy questions to find out if you actually got fired. Perhaps my exposure to such cynics is why I slightly doubt your story. To have a big KZbin channel and say, "I got fired from Facebook" requires a lot of courage. Perhaps you truly did leave it for the reasons you mentioned. Anyways, all the best for your next ventures. 👍

I totally understand what you mean with the growth and valuation aspect in a smaller company or startup. That's also why I'm not sure if I can work in a non-startupy company ever again 😅... I'm not a designer but a developer and work closely with product, design and marketing - and it's that mix that I really like and I was allowed to kinda grow into. In a startup you're usually just more integrated in the whole process and able to learn new things outside the skill you may have been hired for. Whereas in a big company with major hierarchies it's really hard to grow or be valued if you're more of a generalist or want to evolve some new skills outside of your job description. Kinda sad, but I guess it just depends on what type you are and where you feel more at home.

Good summary! Glad you called out "The Social Dilemma" but... definitely recommend looking up "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism." I wonder if designers might see UX's role of keeping users active/engaged while FB figures out how to manufacture new products/experiences from all the (seemingly throwaway) data they swipe from users and their networks. We're all just disposable compared to their social, political and economic aims. They want power and no-one to stop them. Loved that you caught on quickly and found a path out!

At one point, I was put in contact with a Facebook person dedicated to diversity on the platform. Specifically funding black creators. I contacted them within a week and they were no longer employed at Facebook. I honestly hate the platform in my personal life and I can't justify it in my professional life (even though my page used to reach 4million people per day). The amount of bullshit I dealt with on the platform... just not worth it. I don't think they care about diversity. I think they care about appearing that they do. I've heard so many of those stories but so little people speak up about the small impacts that come from working at these companies so thank you so much for speaking about this and making this video! Really happy to hear that you are able to own a product from start to finish, I'm just starting in design and really hope to be able to have a job where I can make an impact one day.

well i think i had kinda same experience with my previous job. I also experienced virtual onboarding process but it's kinda my first fulltime job so i didn't realise the drawbacks of it at that time. besides, i felt bad and unmotivated since i had 2nd mentor because my previous mentor left. since then, i was assigned all the projects with so low impact that PM didn't even care about the data, timeline ... of those projects. and about a month later, i was kicked out from a team without any announcement before. that's why i quitted. i just felt like there's sth about office politics there.

Regarding virtual onboarding: wouldn't you run into similar concerns if you had started at almost any other company during this time when most are working remotely?

I think all big companies work like that. I quit Amazon. They way you described your experience , it feels like me working at Amazon. Plus there's too much micro management.

I guess everything is relative. Your Facebook job would have been paradise compared to my stint at Boeing, working in graphics. First of all, our office was directly above a diesel truck refueling station. I worked 2nd shift when trucks were being refueled. Fumes would rise up and employees were getting so sick, they were passing out. I told my Lead I was going to report this to HR and OSHA. He said, “Go ahead, you’ll be fired the next day.” On top of that, the manager was a nightmare, degrading most of his employees. And it was made clear to everyone that there was no opportunity for advancement. This was back in the 1980’s. I quit as soon as I could find a better job. Other employees said I was crazy to leave, given all the benefits. The culture at Boeing had brainwashed them into living in fear and believing they could never find a better job. After all, we were making around $2K a month + medical!

Facebook was my most toxic job by far. I was traumatized by my experience there and still have trauma 5 years later. It was great for my resume but terrible for my mental health. My issue with Facebook is that they have so much money that whatever work you do is not very significant. It's not a meritocracy, it's more about who you know and how well you suck up to them. And I definitely had an issue being a dark skinned indian woman.
