Let me know what you think about using AI generated art in game development? Useful? Ethically grey? Waste of time? I was honestly pretty impressed with what the AI was able to come up with! Game-ready? Not sure but I think it has some utility for game devs. Thanks for watching! Level Up+ Your Support! - patreon.com/stayathomedev

My question is always, why use AI to generate it? Why not take free assets and do some procedural generation?

It sure can make some pretty artwork, but in video games you need to stylize your assets in a way that looks cohesive and consistent. This problem can be especially noticeable if you try to make pixel art with AI, as conventional pixel art requires a perfect consistency not just across all your assets, but even in one separated artwork. Best use case for it would be to create a sort of sketch, and tracing only the good parts of it, shaping it with your own ideas and artstyle, but again, that will be more useful for pixel art.

Good point...most licenses allow for it as far as I know and your art will be much more cohesive. That's what is lacking IMO, the artistic cohesion and purpose behind the art. Making something look cool is great and all but art is more complex than just visual aesthetic.

Prototyping is good use case. If only to visualize it for your own art.

I think it is fine as long as the buyers know it is AI art (and therefore also know you don't have copyright over the art itself, so they can reuse it however)

My thoughts: Useful - Sure but there’s issues with utility especially since there may be a lack of distinctive style. Ethically grey - Perhaps depending on the amount of work you put in to make it your own. Especially what kind of images are fed into it. If it’s fed 1000s of real artists works, it’s essentially taking elements of those artists and appropriating parts depending on the prompts, devaluing the work of the existing artists unless you put enough input to make it distinctive like a photobash. Also if you fed it your own art, effectively you’re generating new art out of your own input, making it more your own. There’s also legal questions in the air, who owns the copyright. I feel like making game art with AI imagery might put your own game at risk of being freely appropriated, as copyright ownership issues is in the air at the moment. Since you’re not really doing creative work (unless you conduct a photobash process like I said), if you’re inputting word prompts, you’re doing something more akin to putting a request for an artwork by another artist and not necessarily making a work yourself, and it’s been held that AI can’t hold copyright ownership, has to be a human. Just my 0.02$

As far as I know...in the US, they e declined to give copyright to AI generated images. Useful as a prefab tool but there is a great lack of cohesion and artistic direction. An image may stand well on its own but not throughout an entire work.

My feelings on the AI art question is; People are getting very worried about it, but I don't think it's going to change things very much. Ultimately, until it actually achieves sentience, AI is always going to create things based on an aggregate of what already exists, so it's always going to be very generic without a very specific creative vision and extra manual work from the user. At worst I think it'll make it harder to sell medium quality asset packs. I don't think it will ever be a replacement for human creativity, because without human creativity to give it material to base things on, it will never progress beyond what is popular at this very moment. Much of what we consider "good art" comes from it being unique, and unique is the exact opposite of what AI image generation does. People have always been able to go find free assets or pay very small amounts for generic stuff, and the good AI image gen software also costs money so I don't think it's actually going to dilute that market. From what I've seen I don't think any of the AI art is really that much better than asset packs. I don't buy the "it will get better" argument because there isn't a metric for how 'creative' something is. The best artists give their clients what they DIDN'T KNOW they wanted and that is antithetical to what AI does. But it's revolutionary for making memes tho 🤣

I don't know... I've been playing with Stable Diffusion for a couple of days and I've seen it coming up with fashion designs that are totally bonkers, but awesome and actually possible. Ever wondered what kind of corset a "fairy of poison with long translucent mathematical wings" would wear? What even are mathematical wings? Break grammar, use nonsensical terms, throw emotions in place of specific adjectives, and see what the AI comes up with. It's... pretty sweet.
@hotworlds
@hotworlds 2 жыл бұрын
@@NirielWinx That's pretty cool! I guess maybe I came off very critical of AI gen, but I do think it's a great tool for creatives. I'd count you in that group of people with a very specific creative vision :) In that way I think it'll help the art industry more than it hurts.

I love how he pretends it doesn't take hours and hours of re-rolling to actually get useable results with AI. Also, he glosses over the fact that animation is literally impossible because you never get the same character twice, even with identical prompts.

I love the idea of AI as a tool, especially for prototyping... but the morally grey part is what stops me from wanting to ever ship with it. The models have so far been unethically sourced, and there's no regulation coming to force them to become more ethical. I'd like there to be a future where this tooling is able to bring something to the industry, but as it is now its just not ethical, particularly for profit.
@stayathomedev

Great points. Competitive agree from the morally grey standpoint. Interesting tool but not up to par with actual art and it calls into question ownership.

I would have no problem with useing ai generated art in my game. I even tried but the way it is it now, its just not good enough yet. This will change in next 5-10 years and it will be almost standard model that, if not all, you will use ai for some parts of your game.
@stayathomedev

There are some aspects of generated visuals in some respects...though mostly mathematical which is a different topic than human sourced art BUT I do think you're right in that there will be some aspect of it that will be used regularly in the game dev industry.

The big argument for why AI art is unethical right now is that the artists that the AI is trained off of are not being compensated for their work. Artists do study each other to improve, but even then there is always drama when one artist appears to be copying or tracing another without giving credit. This is that problem on a whole other level, because the AI cannot make art without training data. it HAS to take from artists without their consent, and that is theft. in the video you say "it takes time" 0:39. well, spend that time. I guarantee that you can learn pixel art in less time than it took you to learn programming or game development. I approve of giving people the tools that they need to succeed, but it is not difficult to learn basic pixel art for a game like this, and you're not stealing from thousands of other artists in the process
@stayathomedev
@stayathomedev 2 жыл бұрын
Agree completely...even for a spoof game here...the art is coming from other work. While I see utility in mockup use, using it within an actual title is going to fall short and you're better off learning, purchasing, or getting help.
