Your thumbnail says HUNTED instead of HAUNTED. Is that on purpose? :D

Yeah it was. Ghosts are literally hunting the dwarves. I thought it would seem like predator. Might change it due to it confusing people though.

This is genuinely one of the most fascinating ideas for a fort if only because it REALLY is a stupid idea. It's like deliberately playing a game wrong to see how long you can last before the game kicks your teeth in...I appreciate it greatly Blind! Oh and happy new year!
@roboticgamer89903 күн бұрын
agreed some potential other stupid ideas: - sober fortress (no alcohol) - vermin only for food - only one type of food and drink provided (ex. plump helmets) - no clothing allowed - no beds - making the map generate comically hot (ex above boiling point of water) (if memory serves underground is insulated from surface temperatures) - making the map generate comically cold

@@cloudnil depending on how you do the the mapgen there would be places with "normal" temperatures so yes. (ex. a map with both extreme cold and heat will logically have "normal" temperatures in a buffer zone somewhere between them)

"How the hell did [Faintspeaker] get credited the kill [of Oilypaddles the giant porcupine]?" Not sure of the mechanics, but imagine Faintspeaker carried vengeful thoughts to the grave after being killed himself, then upon becoming a ghost, scared Oilypaddles to death sometime prior to scaring Havok the Miner to death through fear.

excellent, entertaining and informative! DF has grown many interesting simulated layers over it's long life and its cool to see one get highlighted as the core part of a fortress' story without it overshadowing all the other goings on. Very well done.
@vonnegutfrey87143 күн бұрын
What if you made a fortress where you tried to push the breeding and taming mechanics to their limit, unleashing a varied and horrifying collection of creatures to the world.
@EddieSpaghetti69Күн бұрын
Not many of the breedable critters are fighters, and those that are tend to be medium sized. If you do nab an Elephant they not only struggle to feed through grazing but they also *stomp the grass* which means less food. You can train them to *war elephants* but they end up always hungry, and the fact that animals experience *mortal terror* around bodies results in them cracking under pressure. Animals that you can train are really hard to do anything with. *Meanwhile,* if you make a natural block-on-a-pillar setup with cage traps *around* the outside you can smash *forgotten beasts* into cages if they get knocked out from the dust push mechanics. You won't be able to train them, but they're hostile to *everything* so you can utilize them to defeat armies.
@robertbecker959Күн бұрын
I think you want to play the game Elf Retreat, not Dwarf Fortress.

My favourite ghost-story from my game was my minter. I always run my fortresses with fairly strict work-assignments, and this dwarf was assigned to the forge that exclusively made coins, which is why I call him my minter. He committed a murder of a dwarf I particularly liked, so I decided that a fitting punishment would be to memorialize him, and then tossing the slab and his body into the river that served as our trash-disposal. I can get pretty petty... I was fairly new to the game, so I thought just *making* the slab was enough. His ghost killed the next dwarf I assigned as minter within days of the ghost rising, then killed his replacement as well, and ripped one arm and one leg off the minter after that. He never once hurt any dwarf I didn't assign to his old forge... Finally I made a new slab for him, which I interred into a chamber down in the caverns, filled with the ghastliest custom-designed statues and wall-carvings I could make depicting his crimes, before walling the chamber off for all eternity. Spooky. :)
@NikaHarperКүн бұрын
I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of the game's depth, I play Dwarf Fortress and The Sims 4 for similar reasons: the day to day can be pretty tame, then unleashes incomprehensible chaos. Embracing that surprise leads to some of the most fun and wild game moments I've experienced, and you share your tavern tales wonderfully. While I'm still learning the ropes of Dwarf Fortress (frantically googling why my hospital isn't working) these narrative moments still rear their head and I'm reminded why I spend 12 hours trying to make gems for trade. My tavern may thrive, my tombs may be many, but watching a legendary giant annihilate injured dwarves in their sick beds is what I'll remember most of all.
@EddieSpaghetti69Күн бұрын
Hospitals need a few things, object-wise they need a bed, table and traction bench while you can use a stockpile for thread and cloth or the chest system as both are respected. The big thing is *items need to be available* and *a spot needs to be unclaimed* for healthcare to be attempted; and the bed-table-traction setup needs to be touching for the bed to consider the supporting object for use. The final, and most annoying aspect is this; *The healthcare job is considered mid-low* which means unless you *free up the doctor from the forge* they'll continue making arrows and not fixing your soldiers. If you want to prevent infections, the trick is to make a tiny ditch that is underground with 2/7 water to wash anyone that enters. Doctor will be clean for surgery, all thread and cloth will be cleaned, patients won't be dirty, people won't require baths as much due to the frequent water walking. I have never had any infections since. *TL:DR?* Make sure your hospital stuff is touching, items and objects are available, and free up the doctor because of job priorities.

spooky... Surprised the fortress remained as stable as it did, all things considered. Obviously things were falling apart for a while with brawlings and random deaths, but it doesn't sound like it ever seemed to collapse into as much of a doom spiral as I'd anticipated. Or more that the spiral it was in was just a very slow one.
