@@hiphopheaven Ridiculously late bump but, although it's relatively easy to pirate music from there (as it is with basically every music platform now), there's a lot less incentive to. The main overarching reasons for piracy are a service problem first and a money problem second. They may not solve the latter, but if you still want to buy and download music, or directly find and support new artists, or even if you're still using FLACs for whatever reason, then Bandcamp is one of the best options you've got. The only way to minimise piracy is by offering a better service than the pirates, and Bandcamp's succeeded pretty well at that so far.

I like the Bandcamp platform, too. Particularly, the way that fans can pay what they want and value the music themselves (especially in cases where the prices are low or nonexistent at baseline). I actually want to see MORE mediums doing this, because it really pays into the law of the vital few--that the few people who care the most and have the most to give are going to give the most. If I want to pay 50 bucks for a record because I think it's life-changingly amazing, I can easily do that in a place that presents that as a thing to do (I don't think many people think to do things like buy the same album 5 times, even if they'd pay that much for it).

@jasonjermakow64649 жыл бұрын
theneedledrop I'd REALLY like to see this become the standard bearer for online music consumption and distribution in the near future. Agreed on multiple points: It's user-friendly, well formatted, very inclusive to a multitude of genres, a network to like-minded and sounding artists, merch and file type availability, and a platform for DIY/indy performers forgoing labels. That being said, I've seen more than a handful of actual labels migrate partial or sometimes whole catalogs to BC too, with hopefully more to come along the way. If/when they decide to integrate their own visual player, if they haven't already begun, that could be the potential game-changer versus KZbin.

I often donate more to an artist above the asking price when I have some extra money about because I really like what they are doing. I wish more artists would sell on there though. Roy Batty It's usually 85%, but if you hit $5000 USD in sales then it's 90% and it stays there providing you've made that much in the past 12 months. I agree that it's more satisfying, as I know the money is going directly to the artist.

Bandcamp gives you 100%, however every 10 sales, Bandcamp will take the money from that tenth track. I'm so happy to see anthony fantano and all of these commenters say these things. I think its the future of the music industry. As long as you're marketing properly and bringing traffic to your band's page, you could theoretically make a living off of bandcamp, or much more than a living. Superstars could use the resources behind them to push people to their bandcamp and to sell merch/music, and earn potentially millions of dollars. Indie musicians (obviously) do the same nowadays on a smaller scale. Unlike any other service, bandcamp is both a streaming service and an online music store. It is going to get BIG, i'm definitely betting my chips on this. It costs NOTHING to get started on bandcamp (other than personal equipment). Really motivated to finish my album now tbh. It's easier than ever for a musician to make a living now, honestly, if you're smart. (sorry sounds like im really shilling bandcamp, but there's no need to, it's already huge. I'm just excited)

As an aspiring artist, Bandcamp feels like the most robust and fair way to present and distribute my music. As a consumer, I have found more amazing music through Bandcamp than anything else. The fact that I can stream the songs in full before I decide to buy them is great - of course this exists on other platforms, but having used Bandcamp as an artist the stats are really useful too so it benefits both parties. The fact that you know your money is going directly to the artist is also fucking great - and the "pay what you want" model is fantastic. I couldn't be more in favour of Bandcamp - I hope they continue to grow and harbour their community.

I'm also an artist on Bandcamp (not just BC, but that's besides the point), and I think it's just the best. Not just in getting my own music up there, but also buying from others. In my opinion, Bandcamp is one of the (if not THEE) best and fairest for both artists and fans, and it just gets better all the time.

The thing about Bandcamp that makes it great (and I'm not saying this with a bias in mind because I love SoundCloud almost as much) is the level of detail they allow on their platform without it being overbearing. Honestly, just looking at the front page makes Bandcamp seem so simple and as if there's not much there and then you start delving deeper. You see that the Bandcamp platform is ridiculously organised. You can search for a tag or you can search within an artist for that tag or you can search for artist that falls under a specific tag. You can find artists by tagged locations, genre of music, how the music was produced (a lot of people are willing to tag how they made their music), etc. Like you said, there are genres upon genres that people thought were dead but are alive and kind of thriving on a platform like Bandcamp. (Seriously, when's the last time you heard someone really go big for Surf Pop? But there's a pretty thriving tag for it on Bandcamp.) To me, Bandcamp is doing everything SoundCloud should be doing but in a lot more user-friendly and cleaner manner.

I agree Anthony. I like this platform a lot too. There isn't really any red tape to it, you can stream right off the website to "try before you buy" and for bands that don't want the full album to be streamed they have the option to do that. It is also great that the pay options are so customizable. The artists could make it free, set a solid price or set a minimum price that fans are allowed to exceed to make donations. And in smaller niche communities I think it's a great platform to discover music. Personally I have found it to of great benefit to the Brony music community which is a niche music community I take some stock in.

I also get the warm fuzzies from buying music off bandcamp. I sometimes go on tag and label expeditions, spending hours travelling across the site in search of some rare gem that fits what I'm really in the mood for. I use SoundCloud as my background music most of the time, as I follow tons of instrumental hip-hop artists, and have built up a decently sized collection of liked tracks that I can turn on shuffle from time to time if I'm not feeling my stream. I wish I could pay them so I didn't have to hear ads. Sometimes I'll hear something so dope on SoundCloud that I'll find the bandcamp of the artist and buy an album. Extra warm fuzzies from that.

I love Bandcamp. You can find some smaller labels who are willing to sell their artists through there and you can find "medium sized" artists as well (Sufjan Stevens is one). There are a lot of things that make this really interesting, it's a worldwide platform meaning you can have artists from anywhere in the world. The variety of music formats, from mp3 to flac. An artist can sell physical content like boxsets, cds and digital all in one page. It's tough place to discover new music, although they have a weekly podcast in the front page showcasing some of their content, it still makes it a hard place to find similar music, unlike the most common streaming services. I use soundcloud, youtube and the digital magazines to find new music and then search for the artist that I want to buy in bandcamp. Sometimes it's a taxing procedure and I don't get everything I want there, but since I don't buy any physical format it's what I have to do to buy my music.

I use SoundCloud to upload everything I do (songs, demos, tech stuff, etc), but I also upload big projects to KZbin since SoundCloud in my opinion has visibility issues. The "worthwhile" things get buried by all the other, less interesting stuff, so I would really like to see them introduce ways to organize and spotlight your tracks. There is a spotlight feature for premium users but you can always only highlight one track afaik. I mean, I'm mainly making music for myself and don't have many listeners, so it doesn't bother me too much. But I think SoundCloud is really frustrating for anyone with a more professional attitude towards what they do. I love Bandcamp though. First place I go these days when buying digital, and I would love to upload a record there one day!

I love Bandcamp because it directly supports the artist and you can donate extra money to the artist. Plus the site allows the artists to sell Vinyls/CDs of much more indie albums, a amazing feature for a record collector like myself.

I got a Spotify promo code from Grooveshark the day they shut down. It was sad but they were super classy in how they went about it.

Can we just take a second to appreciate how great it is that Bandcamp offers download in multiple formats? There are high quality formats like FLAC, as well as much less heavy formats like AAC. It doesn't have you pay separately for different formats at different prices (I'm fucking looking at you, Beatport), rather it gives you a useful set of choices and you can decide on what you prefer.

Bandcamp is my personal favourite. Somewhat chuffed to see so many people like it like I do :)

i like that you have pretty much all audio format options for your purchases (including flac)

I love Bandcamp because I can listen to everything in full length before deciding to buy. The service just treats you with respect. And the usual convention of name-your-own-price has pulled a lot of money out of my pocket I didn't actually intend on spending on numerous occasions. Not everything I've purchased from Bandcamp was worth my usual $10, but some of it sure was worth that $5. Also, I found Perturbator through Bandcamp. So that's icing on the cake. Positively jonseing for the follow up to Dangerous Days.

Bandcamp is my favorite platform when it comes to discovering new artists. A big part of why I like it is how it's designed. But in terms of supporting the artists, CD Baby is much better.

I love Bandcamp, Soundcloud, KZbin, etc. because, like you said, they democratize music. You don't have your tastes dictated you by the head of a record label or radio station, you can go out and find musicians you like. Musicians can make a living off their art and remain independent. The pay-what-you-want system is great as well. I think as time goes on big labels will have less and less influence and we will develop a musical society where artists are independent and where consumers decide directly what music they want to listen to.

So great for new extreme metal Even established artists like Sunn O))) and Converge have fantastic presences there. More labels should follow the example of Southern Lord and Profound Lore and get up there. It'd be great for labels to distribute back catalogue as well as breaking new artists. I think I bought more Bandcamp than any other format or platform digital or physical last year.

Two huge names that have music on bandcamp are Japandroids and Sufjan Stevens.

One of my favorite things about bandcamp over some of the "major" online distributors is that when you buy from them, you get actual CD quality, not lossy formats that maybe were useful 15 years ago when internet usage was more expensive. If I'm buying music, I will not accept lossy quality.

bandcamp is definitely underrated, but the download option is the only thing that makes it different from soundcloud

I love bandcamp! I feel like it's a more personal store with the artist than buying it from iTunes where it has to go through Apple first. I bought a lot of C418's music (Minecraft) through bandcamp and some other obscure soundtracks

Give us a better search engine, Spotify esque playlists for discovering new artists and a modern UI (NOT one of MY complaints, just something I've heard around and I get it) and Bandcamp could be much bigger

I downloaded a KOAN sound ep (for free!!!) and i went back and purchased it later simply due to enjoyment a gained from listening. The name your price model is probably the best thing to happen to music distribution just makes it easier as a fan to consider the value of music both before and after listening to it as your own.

Bandcamp is indeed great. Love how simple and easy and uncluttered it is. Why so many choose Soundcloud instead is a mystery, from both an artist and consumer standpoint. It's messy and unintuitive and everything but user friendly.

I really wish there were more at least moderately big artists on there, though I was happily suprised by the ones that I recognised on there (Mindless Self Indulgence, Atari Teenage Riot, Rabbit Junk and Anti-Flag)

I sell all of my music through bandcamp and it does have its problems. But all said and done, it is the best platform for both artists and fans.

It's a lot more convenient to download music from Bandcamp and there's a bigger variety of music. On the other hand, Soundcloud allows you to form playlists, share music and generally interact more. Personally I find much more utility in Bandcamp but it definitely isn't perfect. Still, it's pretty amazing.

I like bandcamp because it's a good way to present music and also browse music in album format rather than track by track.

Bandcamp is easy to use and great for the underground. Its directly connected with the artists and I can download the music in FLAC. There is no site better for discovering and downloading music.
