Japanese dub does that as well, they just don't translate it that well.
@solaire22718 ай бұрын
@@abyssstrider2547 That's the point I'm making here. There's a difference between a translation and a localization. Translation is raw, and can come off as sounding odd because a joke that would land in Japanese doesn't make any sense or just doesn't land as strong in English. Whereas a localization takes the translation, and alters it slightly to be more natural and that often means changing jokes either entirely or slightly depending on how rough the translation is. And I like it better when a dub team takes the extra step to localize the dialogue to try and illicit the same reaction that line was meant to for a Japanese audience for an American one. Sure there are extremes of localizaton can cause them to change too much of something that is crucial to the story and can cause confusion in understanding to the lore. But in cases like this I think it's the better option.
@metazoxan28 ай бұрын
@@solaire2271 It's just a shame that some particularly vocal localizers have completely destroyed the profession's reputation by not only inserting politics into translations instead of just adapting jokes and references. Since then, we've gotten context that not even the main characters are death-proof (and have even been killed one-to-multiple times previously, to boot), and, for the time being, they're covering 'shallow' floors that they recognize/have a handle on, approached through fresh eyes of "What's good eatin' around these parts?" (which, reminder, is very much in the vein of mental damage, based upon how freaky the monsters are to begin with) Pending the quality of the adaptation, they'll get to more sweet and sour suffering, soon enough.

My only complaint is how dumb the title is, makes it be a bit of a harder sell to people who aren't already weeb-ing out. For comparison, the japanese title was 'Danjon Meshi', literal translation for that would have been 'Dungeon Meal'. This is the same issue that 'Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon' had a massively better Japanese name of 'DanMachi'
@Cyberweasel895 ай бұрын
@@zombiexpanda Well, DanMachi is just an appreviation of the full Japanese title, which is more or less the same as the Japanese title. That said, the English title does lose a pun that was in the Japanese title. The Japanese title used the term "romantic encounter," which is a pun on random encounters in RPGs. Also, I think the logic is that "Dungeon Meal" is fairly generic and non-indicative, while "Delicious in Dungeon" has added alliterative appeal.

@@jpjfrey5673I disagree. To be human is to be the hypocrite sometimes, and I think that after admitting he was wrong and doubling back on his take, it's not fair to keep hating on him. Like, talk of hypocrisy, what about double standards? People aren't infallible by nature, and sometimes people are going to make erroneous takes; what kind of person are you to shun someone who learns from their error and grows past it? And anyways, the perception of his original opinion is also out of line. The context for his opinion is because of discrimination working in the opposite way of modern industry standard, where people with suitable talent but belong to a minority would be discriminated against. The problem was real and to try and fix it wasn't ignoble, but his worldview at the time was incomplete until it was challenged just lately, where he had to realize he was wrong about it. The thing that frustrates me so much is how much a prejudiced narrator can twist a situation into something much worse. Drama creators are truly the worst.
