I can't imagine people asking for a darker ending; it's dark as is. 80% of humanity died. Countless characters dead. To top it off, the ending shows how even after all of the struggle, eventually, humanity just goes through the same cycle and destroys itself. The show literally ends with a nuclear war, just showing the human conditjon will never change. Pretty dark ending imo.
@chosenrubric73082 ай бұрын
People who dislike the ending aren't generally asking for "just a darker ending". They just wanted a more coherent ending thematically and character-wise according to the set up.
@bd_bandkanon10 ай бұрын
I'm gonna be real. For the entire course of AoT's runtime, I didn't give a single crap about the series. namely bc all the fans I came across were just in it for the action and the character deaths and "oo it's so dark it's so gritty". The hype was just annoying to me. It was only after the uproar about the ending that I decided to binge-watch the series, because I wanted to know what the fuss was about. Nobody told me about the nuance, the symbolism, the intricate storytelling and the character depth. Nobody told me that the characters actually successfully lived on in spirit past their expiration, unlike with so many other of those "dark and gritty" franchises with their propensity to kill off characters for shock value and forget about them almost immediately. If someone had *told* me about that, I would have been interested in AoT from the get-go. I appreciate the ending and the uproar it caused. If not for that, I would not have been exposed to this absolute classic.

To be fair, Reiner outside of being a warrior/soldier has always been depicted as a weirdo, so that scene of him sniffing Historia's letter didn't surprise me at all. Anyways, W analysis of the finale. I agree with all the points you went over. I find myself loving that finale more and more as time passes.
@Haha_You_Fool10 ай бұрын
I like the idea of Reiner being a goofy weirdo in his final moments to show how he’s finally able to move past his trauma, buttttt being a pathetic creep like that doesn’t really gel with me or fit with his character all that much imo. Kind of sours the fantastically beautiful resolution to Reiner’s character earlier in the ending for me.

I saw your other meme video yesterday and thought it was hilarious. Though I had been hoping to hear your thoughts since it's been fun for me to see what others thought of the show since finishing it myself. I didn't spend time on forums, chatting with other fans or even looking up theories as I didn't want to spoil anything. So when the end came, I wasn't surprised. My mom and sisters and I had more or less guessed that Eren was going to kill as many people as he could so they could live peaceful lives. They were all he cared about. So while it was hard watching him be so mean and angry I found his breakdown scene so cathartic. I was so excited to see him being himself again. Like it was such relief to see that under all the dark brooding Eren was still the crazy, emotional brat I knew and loved. Also it was so frustratingly obvious he loved Mikasa it's weird that anyone was surprised by it or was mad there was romance. I'm just baffled by the hate. I loved it. I think people got caught in their own theories and predictions and forgot it was someone else's story to tell. Either way this was a fun video. Could have done with that weird Mappa animator dub meme but otherwise it was good.

Really enjoyed the vid. I'll point out that titans are not really implied to return when the boy enters the tree. Zeke explained why Ymir became a titan, and it was due to her desires and emotional state at the time, fearing death. This boy has a dog companion instead of being hunted by dogs, and he is exploring like the scouts instead of running for his life. So anything could happen, it is completely open ended.

The Paradis getting peace kinda breaks down when they end up as a fascist, military state. Like the characters never effectively disprove the Jeagerist argument, and the show never appropriately mourns 80% of humanity's death. And the reason the Mikasa line sounds so weird is that the Eren-Mikasa thing is mostly portrayed as unrequited love. And for that to be Eren's big regret instead of all the death and friend endagerment seems wrong
@usagibun763910 ай бұрын
yup, it is clear that he prioritizes his personal goals for him and his friends over humanity. I still think that's the point of his character, he's selfish. historia had a similar development, she doesn't care if she's the worst girl in the world, she's going to live for herself like ymir told her and she ends up okaying the rumbling w eren. the story from beginning to end is meant for you to question who's the “good guy” or what it means to be “a good person”. the show doesn't shy away from the harsh reality of these characters bad choices. sure you can argue they might look cool doing it, but I think that's also a nod to the question of whether there is such thing as a truly “anti-war” film/show. As for the fascist military state, there's a clear side eye from sasha’s family that openly talked about getting out of the “forest” that is war and violence. just because some characters we like end up fascist doesn't mean it's portrayed as a good thing. It's actually quite realistic that in a fascist society a lot of ordinary people we once knew and loved become apart of it, and its disappointing and scary.

It's clearly not his "biggest regret". He immediately points out how all the people he killed didn't want to die when Armin tries to encourage him to find a way to change things. He enumerated his sins prior to the beach scene-- he outright lists out the endangerment of his friends-- and trembled when he tried to explain that he indirectly killed his mother.

They’re not though. Every paradisian only just learned about the concept of race and the first thing they’re told and repeatedly shown is “everyone hates yours”. It’s pretty disingenuous to call them racist. And yes they are certainly being ruthless because at that moment all it would take is some crazy traitors (the alliance) to ruin their salvation, there’s no indication they would act that way after their survival is assured, and even if it was Eren and historia would be there to reign them in.

I'm of the opinion that there was no ending that wouldve satisfied everyone. You cant do that when you have a very.... Opnionated fandom all with different opinions and ideals. Its just not possible :/ Edit: but the true dark ending of aot was originally gonna be that they all died. Maybe we need to draw that 🤔

I love the ending too. Sure, there may be issues with some aspects of the execution, such as conveyance and pacing. But the more I think about it, the more I love the themes and character moments, and everything that it's going for. And when I rewatch it, or think about it, I'm not going to think about some parts that were confusing on a first watch. Or about the pacing that might still be a little bit too fast. I'm going to think about everything brilliant that the ending went for, and the emotions that it carries.

* Eren doesn't forget why he did the Rumbling. I don't know how long that misconception will last, and I'm 80% sure it's caused by crossed wires beckoning the end of SAO's Aincrad arc. He says that he doesn't know _why_ he wanted to do the Rumbling. But he certainly knows that he did want to, and thus "had" to. Visual cues of his father's memory of his birth instruct the reader that this desire for freedom that led to him ideating the Rumbling was something he was born with. * I maintain that the nuances of Eren's words as he stabbed Mikasa's kidnappers can be significantly better understood by contrasting them with what they were _supposed_ to be, as per the original draft of chapter 1 where this incident was supposed to be exposited. There, he stabs them while rhetorically asking how they could do something like this to a little girl. It's decidedly more heroic than, albeit equally frantic as, what we get in chapter 6 of the serialization-- there, he... well, says about what you clipped, his focus being on dehumanizing his targets rather than lamenting their depravity. He doesn't even call them "evil people"-- he rationalizes to Grisha that they were "beasts in human clothing". * I like your interpretation of Armin's socking Eren, and particularly how you worded it. I came to a similar conclusion not long ago, that Armin punching him was what got Eren to open up.

I liked the ending, even as a manga reader I was actually hyped up during the entire thing. The only problem I had and still have with it is Ymir's motivation ( How she needed to wait 2000 years and to see Mikasa kill Eren in order to be free), It just felt off and kinda devalued everything the characters have been through. Still if you ignore that, the ending is great! I am also glad Isayama changed the script for Eren and Armin's conversation, it hit so much harder
