@@韓国J Always glad to help. I am an African American over sixty with family in the south, so I have some perspective. The problem is mostly in the history and a little bit in the definition. First lets handle the definition because that is easier. "Colored person" in an old time, polite euphemism for African Americans. "People of color" is a newer term. It's more descriptive and can be used as a blanket term for any ethnic group that is not classed as "white" or has more pigment in their skin. It's most often applied to African Americans, but can be used for groups from South and Central America, Asia, and of course Africa. It can be a unifying term, as tan people, brown people and black people can all experience the same kind of racism, discrimination, police abuse, etc. It's an umbrella term. Now for the history of the term "colored people", often shortened by Southern whites to just "the coloreds". It's hard to pin it down as absolutely racist. Some people using it mean no offence. Some older (much older, like in their 90's) African Americans may still use it and see nothing wrong with it. It is more a matter of it sending the wrong signals. It's a matter of it being a red flag to black people within hearing that you might be an acknowledged racist, or even worse, a person who is absolutely a racist but doesn't know it themselves (there are a lot of them out there). The fact that it was a euphemism, or a polite way to speak the unspeakable is the first problem. It was viewed as being shameful to acknowledge any connection to Africa, so the term "African American" was not used and the term "black" while muttered when you were angry, should not be said in polite company. It was as if what we were was a shameful thing that had to be talked around. It is also connected in many peoples minds with southern white folks sitting on their front porches, drinking iced tea and saying things like "Just a listen to those coloreds sing! They are such musical people, so happy and gay without a care in the world! Just like little children. It's a good thing they have us white folks to look after 'em, take care of em and curb their primitive tendencies! Did ya'll hear about that ruckus down in Alabama? Seems like some no good darkie got to telling them that they should vote! Well they took care of that right quick. Shot him and strung him up from the nearest tree they did. Voting! As if they'd know what to do with a vote!" You get the picture? That's the kind of talk it was often linked to. It was also used in many racist diatribes, news articles and "scientific" papers about the innate inferiority of darker peoples. So as a black person, if I hear someone use a term like "colored" in a conversation, my mind says "possible racist, be careful". I may not condemn them out of hand, but I go on high alert just in case. It's one of those cultural land mines that it's best to walk around. Some Asian people in the West have the same reaction to the term "Oriental" for the same cultural reasons. It was used in those same kinds of racist context and leaves a bad taste in their mouths, at least for some of them. Hope this helps clear things up, at least a little bit. Take care.

Exactly! I follow another channel (which I love) but they visit homes on lands without EVER acknowledging that they are on sacred Native land. Especially the homes in WA and OR - just pop in a sentence or two about the Duwamish or the Umpqua as a sign of respect. And all the people who are so Eco friendly and want to live off the land never seem to say what/whose that land is!

Which proves her point. They advertising for this society is all descent folks allowed. Then a lower income black woman moves in, and folks started acting real isolationist. The very fact that the houses are tiny and the black person is one of few black folks there, should say, one that this black person is looking for new experiences outside of their racial identity. And two that it's too small to invite more black folks than folks are ready for around in the tiny community mix. Black folks that is trying to assimilate is not trying to be a rebel in the mix, seeing racist everywhere, the ones that do see racist everywhere, usually stick too their own racial group and spaces. Am saying that the black folks that is looking for new life experiences outside of their racial group and spaces, AREN'T TRYING TO SEE RACISM. They are the ones most likely to not see it at all or miss it completely because they're not looking for racism or racist in their mission to find new experiences outside of the black community. Those are the ones that'll come back home and tell us, white folks ain't so bad or scary as we have been told they are. There are still white communities that make it clear the their estate Realtors that no black folks allowed. Those that say, it's okay for us to live in their communities, should mean it just as much as the racially bias folks mean, what they say. Don't tell us, yes it's okay to buy a home in this community and when we get there, we have to deal with y9lks from the dominant society, *messing with our peace of mind.* Because you want us to move back out like that is afforded for black folks, to just move because you don't like us. I think the realtor's should make sure that folks know, that this space is open to black buyers to. Before they buy into a MIXED RACE COMMUNITY. It's not just that white community spaces are better funded, it also means to us that the past, is finally in the pass.

Statistically speaking it's normal you don't see them - only an absolutely tiny fraction of whites consider tiny houses and even fewer go through with actually living in one. It's a numbers thing and probably cultural. I'm eastern european and my people laugh at shows like these, they all aspire to leave their tiny homes and live in mansions.

The amount of different relax zones around the house - one (or more :) inside, two patios and the backyard - I can't put it properly into words but I think it helps to make a change of pace, the home is ready for various moods of the owner, it seems more friendly. Love that she didn't do the regular tiny house tour. She discussed more intricate topics that are usually glossed over. The fact that people are choosing this lifestyle; whereas, there is a class of people who don't have a choice and must live in small spaces. The reality that the face of this movement is very one note. While there are Black and brown people who are also invested in this movement. She also spoke about experiencing racism as a Black woman who chose to live in a tiny home. Those areas that allow tiny homes to be built and maintained aren't always safe for Black people. I'm glad she was given a platform to discuss these issues. Beautiful.

It's true what she says about the tiny house movement being 99% white people dominant, but the range of reasons why they choose tiny houses is far more wide ranging than she described. The number of preppy types are definitely in the minority and tend to be more family units than couples - especially in the skoolie conversions group. I suspect this is more of a trend in the US than in the other dominant countries i.e. Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The rest are mainly in three other groups - younger people who can't afford property or rental prices, people who want to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, and people who choose to spend their money on experiences instead of things. There's two other under represented groups - older people and people with disabilities. But when it comes the poorer in our society and the homeless (including the hidden homeless), there is plenty of initiatives around the world aiming to help these groups find decent homes. The problem is none of these initiatives become long-term policies and the laws around planning/zoning are huge barriers to enabling this to happen. I've followed the tiny house movement for years now and the majority of tiny homes are on land owned by family, friends and acquaintances. Tiny home communities are still very much in their infancy and are still considered less than desirable by a large part of society, almost as if they are communes or hippy gathering spaces. People need to stop thinking big is beautiful and bigger is better. The perception that the size of your home is a measure of your success needs to change.

She made so many good points in this. I find the tiny house movement largely absurd, given the aspirational element, which is the vast majority of tiny home owners. Disparaging trailer/mobile home dwellers while praising...(say it with me now) over-priced trailers is ridiculous. More voices like hers and low income folks are so essential.

aldralee I think it’s interesting that you feel that way about the movement. For me, I’ve always thought it was a way for people to have their own home (which is a lot of people’s dream) but in a more financially feasible way. I’ve never heard any of the people I watched disparage trailer homes or mobile homes. Also, a lot of videos I’ve watched have chosen to do the tiny house thing because they are trying to lessen their environmental footprint. Btw not trying to argue I just find it interesting that we have such different views of the tiny house movement.

❤️ love! I have watched so many tiny house videos, but this is the first that spoke to directly me And my worries about going tiny. The interplay of race, and class and going tiny is something I have long debated, both with friends, family, and myself. Tiny Movement does have “ a look/image” and it didn’t leave room for people like myself. I’m not trying to be a vegan, vagabond, living on a beach or wilderness. Im not hipster artist. I’m a black woman, with a white collar job. I wear suits for work, & carry a brief everyday. I work in the city. Wanted to continue to live in the city. This video makes it all seem possible. Very well done 👍🏿

I must say i have researched the tiny movement over two years and i always said when my eldest graduates i am making the transition. For life experiences and the impact on the the environment and really truly wanting quality of life over quantity. Ive seen alot BUT NOTHING prepared me for this and she is right i mean how could i have missed this so now i have a proper mind set. As I’m looking at different contractors and seeing if i can maybe pursue my build. With help of family THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO

I think you have one of my top 5 builds. It’s gorgeous. I just wish I could have seen more of it. My heart was breaking hearing your story. I’m so sorry you have malicious people to deal with. I wasn’t raised with that mentality and I just can’t understand why it exists. Usually ignorance is the major Societal problems. Generations passing down prejudices. At some point it just has to stop. I love your home and I think it’s as gorgeous as you. I can tell you are very kind person. Bless you and I hope you have many wonderful years living in your dream house. I can’t imagine why you’d ever leave. Hilary
