It was my thought that everyone on mars at that point would've been very well screened and found unlikely to commit any major crimes, they also mentioned how roommates are cycled to prevent bad quarrels or strong bonds that could lead to trouble if there were a falling out later. What I find more unrealistic is the lack of psychological care they all have, discouraging strong friendships and romantic relationships along with the new and cramped and hostile environment would be hell on anyone's psyche. I'd say it could be a mix of naivete and oversight, much like Brazil sending soldiers with summer equipment to Europe in the winter because they forgot the seasons are different in the northern hemisphere

Law student here, during my first semester in college, one particular lecturess repeatedly told the story of Robinson Crusoe - the main topic of that story is that somebody living alone requires no societal rule to function but as the population grew new rules were made and applied - The First Murder On Mars perfectly captures why a firm societal rule is very important to build a secure society, or rather, what the lack of said system of laws would result in. Well done, Ronnie.
@wandering_heart8 ай бұрын
The problem being that you cannot establish a set of laws based on societal and cultural opinions and norms... because those things are amorphous. Your laws must be based upon an objective understanding of right and wrong. Lest they become contradictive and destructive. The kind of agreeable nature that makes for a mutual understanding of right and wrong only really exists in commune. America will never have it. Too many disparate cultures and sets of ideals. No homogeneity. No real social glue.

@@JimTheBananaBoy Sex is absolutely mandatory. Not in the sense that you're required to have, just required to have the right to it. They're trying to establish a permanent mars colony, and that means they need to have a steady population. Sending people up every now and again is not going to be sustainable after some time, and children will need to be born at some point. Obviously systems would need to be in place to prevent the population from growing too fast, or children being born before it can handle them, but it should be expected from the jump that relationships and sex are a natural and necessary aspect of the human condition, and will be needed if the mission is to succeed

Capital punishment is a necessary part of a just system. The main character pretending it’s somehow contrary to human rights is very naive.
@HavianEla2 ай бұрын
As someone who takes human rights extremely seriously, for even the most deplorable people… I don’t even necessarily disagree. The problem is, is that (in the U.S, as well as much of the world) the justice system fails in its two jobs - reform those that CAN be helped, and keep those who refuse to change their vile ways locked up from society. Another issue is trust in the government. Do you, truly, trust our government to halt a DP when someone’s proven innocent? It RARELY happens, even when prosecutors ADMIT they got it wrong. Feds have made false SA allegations against whistleblowers and journalists. As much as there are CERTAINLY folks deserving of the DP, I don’t trust our current government with such powers. If such decisions were completely in the hands of the community members around the accused, as well as (and most importantly) the purported victim(s), then my concerns would be laid to rest. Like, I, for one, definitely wouldn’t be upset in any measure if s*x crimes would result in capital punishment. They gave their victim a life sentence, what makes these creeps so special they DON’T deserve the same?

If you’re intention is to build a new society, it would be wise to consider everything in your risk assessment, including a legal framework for these types of situations. Instead they found themselves having to work out the rules of trial and punishment in the aftermath of the murder, when tempers were running high and people were scared. Could it be that this group were all scientific sorts who considered themselves above such severe lapses of moral character, so didn’t think it would ever happen? Who knows, but the offender in this story seemed to be having a breakdown, so it was more nuanced than simple malice murder, hence the protagonist’s push for mercy. The killing of the offender was premeditated murder though, and at that point this society has fallen apart, everything they worked for was destroyed. It’s a good story.

This is just way too unrealistic. Colonization would cost way to much money to not have a law codex from day one. Sure, it could evolve with time, but no sane person would allow for such drama in an environement where literally everyhing can kill you. Laws are created so we, as a society, do not neet to invent the wheel for a second time...

Thank you Somnium for the awesome pasta. Excellent story and narration as always, and I definitely loved this one. I definitely loved forward to hearing the rest of Borrasca narrated. Definitely one of my favorites. "PS, You're vehicle has been lojacked... Courtesy of the butler county sheriffs department." I know you'll come across that line in the second half a Borrasca lol. Anyway awesome story. 🖤🖤🖤🖤

Hate to be picky, but Cronus is one of the titans. Either way his dominion is over time not over agriculture. the author must be thinking of demeter...
@Joesmho238 ай бұрын
Cronus is (was?) the god of harvest. Chronos is time, the titan. They are different

@Joesmho23 nah, same guy. Both titan of time and God of agriculture.
@AshBreather8 ай бұрын
@@Augs-0418 Nope. Classical Greece, and their mythology, came before classical Roman antiquity. In the original Greek mythology he was only a patron (not god) of harvest. He only became associated with time due to the Romans interpreting Cronus as Chronos, and was later conflated with being Saturn. This would be like saying a fan-canon of a movie or video game is more valid than the original creators' vision.

So this guy stands ground for a literal murderer, gets but hurt cause people don’t want to reside with one and decides to take justice themselves, and than he ends up killing 13 people at the end? What the biggest hypocrite of all time lmao. And I feel like Miquel wouldn’t go out without a fight brah.

This is the error by the writer that ruined the story for me. It’s such a basic thing; the fact that the writer either doesn’t understand simple physics or was too lazy to find a way to write the story realistically just made me very disappointed that I wasted time listening to it.

How ? He made his case and got the majority on his side, its not his fault a bunch of people decided to overide the vote
@anidiot58277 ай бұрын
@khalakrean6890 I would argue the method of having Nigel go in front of everyone just to secure the main character's vote was just emotional manipulation with no logical argumentation to it besides Nigel's guilt. In a situation like that where one person messing up costs lives and already showed an unwillingness to stay and assist it is a legitimate question on if he should continue working besides being put on indefinite hold since what if Nigel breaks again. These kinds of big decisions should be done without emotion considering the wider consequences to the project and people. But hey that's just me
@khalakrean68907 ай бұрын
@@anidiot5827 How is showing that someone regret their actions manipulation ? You know there's such a thing as criminals receiving lighter sentences if they show remorse because *logicaly* it means that they wont be a danger again and *logicaly* if you have ways to ensure someone wont be a danger anymore killing them stops being protection and becomes vengeance, which they did by the way, they had very easy ways to ensure he wouldn't hurt anyone again, they know to look out for his mental health and to not leave him alone with someone and he hates what he's done so its not like he's going to plot to do it again
@husky00986 ай бұрын
@@anidiot5827 Deciding without emotion would be deciding without humanity. If the goal is to create a functioning society, things such as mercy and rehabilitation have to be taken into account, and in the given situation, Nigel's guilt was a legitimate point in the case of him not reoffending. Besides, even if he wanted to kill more people, with 70 colonists and lockable doors, it would be trivial to keep him detained. Establishing the death penalty in humanity's first off-world colony is unconscionable and would be a slap in the face of all civilized society. (Yes, that also goes for the ending, but I'm not here to argue for Al, but against the death penalty.)
