What really helps to make the materials look as good as they do are the high quality ssr. Raytraced reflections are a huge improvement for car materials, but ssr is as close as you can get without it and for some reason neither forza, nfs, or gt sport ever used it for the cars

@Okabe Rintaro (Blackpilled) if raytracing is so bad, why does every pixar movie since monsters Inc 2 use it? Why is almost all cgi in live action movies raytraced? Its because raytracing is objectively the best way to simulate lighting. If anything, the existing rasterised effects are bandaid hacks to try and emulate reality while waiting on hardware powerful enough to fully raytrace everything. When it comes to racing games, raytracing is a must for photoreal graphics. There is no other way for the cars to realistically reflect themselves (ssr is close but has issues). Even before pixar was using raytracing everywhere, they used raytraced reflections for the cars movies because without internal reflections cars just don't look right. Im sure you'd agree video-game lighting is extremely realistic, but it's not quite perfect. There isn't much more traditional rasterisation is capable of, so if we want photoreal games raytracing is required. One last thing, although this has been long enough already. A lot of indie games that don't look too great are starting to use raytracing all the time now, which is probably what gave you the impression that it's mainly for fixing already bad graphics. If you want to see what a talented team of devs can do with it, have a look at the ue5 matrix demo. It uses a mix of extremely well optimised raytracing and rasterisation to create the best looking game I've ever seen in just a few months and without any prebaked lighting that smaller linear games have the advantage of using

@Okabe Rintaro (Blackpilled) whether it's rendered in realtime or not, both movies and games are displayed in realtime so if there was no time to tell the difference, it wouldn't be used in movies. Before the chip shortage, I got an rtx 2060s for about £400. If it wasn't for the shortage it would be worth significantly less than that by now. And yet, I can still run forza horizon 5 at maximum settings at 1440p with a mod that enables raytraced reflections during gameplay, and it looks great. As graphics gets closer to photoreal there will be diminishing returns relative to the amount of power you throw at it, especially with raytracing. Raytracing is effectively the final hurdle, and in the span of a few years we've gone from barely being able to render a frame every second to being able to run more than 60 on a mid spec card. Theres always the argument about whether graphics are worth it. I personally think nice looking things are nice. But if you don't, then you can always lower the settings or buy a console. When raytracing is eventually required (unreal engine 5 for example) it will open up games for fully dynamic lighting systems that won't just improve visuals, it will allow for the developers to be way more flexible with gameplay features like destruction that even you would be able to see the advantage of it.

@@existentialselkath1264 Question is, do you really need raytracing with the performance gap it makes? Some games barely look different with raytracing on and that's because they already have a good lighting system, look at RDR2 or Division 2 for example and its dynamic lighting system without raytracing. We have NVIDIA HFTS which soften shadows the further they are to the object on GTX 900 cards. We got HBAO+ before raytraced ambient occlusion. These technologies worked pretty well without needing RT cores. GTSport has raytraced lighting but it is baked. That's why the time is locked. I like SEUS' implementation of PTGI for Minecraft it looks great and it runs alright with my 1070. However until we have really good software raytracing I think game devs should rely more on clever lighting tricks to make the game look good. I like graphics but I also like great performance, unless its a special case where the frames are locked like NFS The Run where it can clearly run faster than 30fps but it is locked to it. I like raytracing when it comes to small implementations like only self reflections in the FH5 raytracing mod. Driveclub looks great but where it shows it's age is the interior lighting. Which is what Gran Turismo 7 looks the best. If there could be a regional raytracing like only raytracing interiors of cars or inside the engine bay (sometimes engines just glow) that'll be the best of both worlds. Not much of a performance hit, and without RT cores, you could probably still PTGI those parts.

Driveclub is still the visual king, especially with the insane weather effects and reflections. I still show people, and then I shock them by saying it's from 2014. Imagine if there was a way to upgrade it to 4k 60. Everyone else might as well go home. I wish this stuff and those people went to Polyphony. that's another game over.

I picked this game up a few days ago as a used disc. And unfortunately despite offering a fantastic driving experience and fantastic visuals, there's not much to see and to do anymore because more than half of the game is DLC (events and cars). And that DLC is not available anymore. And the online servers shut down. Overall I feel bad jumping in this game so late

What helps driveclub in the situation you described of being top notch is also the fact that however you play it... It has the shakiness of the camera which gives it the realistic tone... Besides the water/sun/reflections effects. Prove me wrong.

Minecraft when you install a certain texture pack and shader on it can be the best looking survival game ever played. You'll have to do trial and error to find the exact texture pack and shader pack but once you do you won't be able to put the game down.
