You will be so proud of me.... going through my bathroom cosmetics I came across two boxes of a very nice mascara (cuz I got it for a 3 for the price of 1 sale) I had wanted to try it so I got it. I don't use mascara that much, lol. So.... I asked my younger neighbor if she would like the two boxes that had been sitting in my drawer. It happened to be the kind she was wearing 😁. She was so grateful to get it and it made me so happy.

Fast forward to today, I get so excited for every weekly video she posts because she was right, even the old reminders are always so fresh and helpful! To top it all off Dawn is such a delight to listen to, the kind of person who you know you could stop in any time and always feel at home! Salsa is such a deal at Costco that we would always have a big jar open and it would go bad before we could use it up. Uggh! Last year I had a lightbulb moment. Now whenever we open a new jar, I divide it up into several small jars. One jar goes in the fridge and the rest go into the freezer. No more wasted salsa!

I do the same thing with Costco boned chicken breast. 1/3 bag refrigerator. 1/3 bag freezer, 1/3 bag freezer. I also stopped buying the larger packages of hummus and guacamole for the individual sized ones (I live by myself). I put most in the freezer with 2-3 in the fridge. As I use them, I move more to the fridge.

Just what I would think to do: put any extras ( from multi-packs, etc) into a bin on your basement shelves? I'd make a dry-erase list or keep something one on my phone to keep track of inventory or just always check there first before going out to shop. I live in a small, inefficient space (tools, DIY, laundry supplies, etc in kitchen cabinets) that I drool over your nice clean basement storage space! I am watching for a bit then setting the timer for 5 minutes to declutter/clean and coming back for more inspiration. Getting a lot done today!

Once a week I gather all the leftovers, warm up the ones that need to be served hot, open the condiments and chip bags, fruit that needs to be eaten, etc and each one eats whatever he wants. Things don’t always go together but our family loves this and I don’t have to cook and food is not wasted then when bits and pieces of breakfast foods accumulate I do the same, the last of a box of cereal, two frozen waffles, a bagel and an English muffin, the last slice of bread, a pop tart, a cold biscuit, an envelop of oatmeal and the last bit of milk or butter or jam, etc. I leave these breakfast bits out all morning and we always seem to make a lunch out of then too. Kids (and adults) love this.

Okay I was a massive hoarder. I set a really bad example for my ex and my daughter with my inability to let things go. In the beginning I made a game with finally letting things go. We had so many yard sales. We'd pick an item we really wanted for our home and we could only get it if we sold enough from our house. That summer we were able to buy a really nice gazebo, "grown up' silverware, a PlayStation and Xbox, and a Keurig which is saying something considering we priced everything cheap! Anyway - I've definitely gotten rid of things I've regretted but I'm not upset because for every 1 item I've regretted there have been hundreds more that I don't even remember and that space is so worth the little bit of regret that I occasionally feel. Even though I make mistakes I still let go because I love me more than I love any item in my home

I love decluttering. I grew up in a hoarding home with “paths” through the house, and ever since I fled the coop over a decade ago, I’ve struggled with my attachment to things. It was actually Vera from “ simple happy zen” who started me on my decluttering journey, however it’s been you, Dawn, who has continued to propel me forward every week. I love your videos because I always end finding something to declutter while I’m watching your channel, even though I do it in a regular basis on my own. I love how you keep reminding us not to feel guilty and it’s just stuff - stuff that needs to be managed. I find with my time will tell stuff that when I revisit it, I decide to get rid of it because I don’t want to have to make a third decision on it. Noticing this pattern has made me trust my instincts on the first pass just to get rid of it. 😊

Re: LOL Glamper . I donated a fully-stocked collector Lundby dollhouse years ago to the Children's Wing of our local hospital. The staff was thrilled! Re: Salsa. We had that issue so I created a Salsa Soup recipe. Everyone loves it. Re: Produce. We take ours out of plastic and wrap it in old kitchen towels. The produce lasts longer and tastes better. I appreciate that you show - and drive home - that Minimalism is not a one and done. It's kind of like marriage; we need to invest time into it in order to reap the dividends.

Keeping a sharpie and a roll of painter's tape in the utility drawer for marking dates has saved me thousands in wasted food over the years!

my mom was on a tight budget for 8 people in 70s. She only bought groceries based on her 8 meals grocery list. (almost everyone eats only about 8 actual meals and left overs per week). The waste was minimal, and her garden was huge which meant she was always adding two or three vegetable sides to round up the meals. Buying for the actual 8 meals you eat, plus sandwich meat or sandwich breads will help you get that issue under control 100%. I myself have been fighting wastage so have been keeping the costs down and using up lots more stuff. oops I forgot to mention that she used vegetables to make a soup for a weekend meal.

I bulk cook and freeze extra portions, ready to throw in the microwave when I have no energy. Yay for healthy "ready meals" without all the additives. When were all sick for a week, I was all set with frozen, dried and tinned easy meals so we could isolate (not go to the store etc). I'll also buy a 1kg bag of carrots then peel, chop and freeze them in bags of 2carrots portions, ready to throw into Shepherd's Pie, Ragu etc. Same goes for other veggies, and fruits! My boy and I will gladly eat a bowl of frozen mango, berries and sliced bananas as if it's ice cream 😂 ... My point is, try freezing anything you won't have time to cook/eat fresh before it goes off. My Polish, Czech&Slovak friends also love pickling veggies as an alternative method to avoid waste.

It became a dumping ground for everyone's footwear. We also have a shoe rack in the entryway closet. Last week I decided to get rid of the boot tray. We live in a fairly small townhouse (1700 sq ft) with our 4 children still at home, and I always have a hard time figuring out where to put stuff (what zones should be where). We also homeschool and we own two businesses. I’d love to not have the desk in our room but because of the layout (one living area with living room, kitchen and dining), it seems like it’s really the only place for it. I’d love for you to do a video sometime explaining how you decided where your zones would be, how you decided what would go in the laundry room vs in the spare bedroom etc. Love your videos - always so helpful. Thank you!

When my kids were growing up - and still small - I used a small mess bag with each one & had their names on them - They were in charged with putting dirty socks in their bag - until laundry day - the bag went in & came out clean - I mated the socks & they put the clean ones in their drawer - then the bag went back on their bedroom door knob to be repeated the next week.

Love function over anything especially with a growing family . My bathroom counters are clear except for soap . We even went so far as when the time came to replace faucets we did away with the two handled faucets in the baths and eventually even the kitchen to single handled faucets ! So much easier and quicker to clean .

The Prepper Princess combines like liquid soaps scraps in the bottom of bottles and I combine things like laundry spot cleaner meant for the same types of stains and fabrics. Usually there's a little room in the new bottle to pour the remains of the last bottle. I also make myself use consumables I don't really like so I don't waste and as a reminder to purchase with care or I may be stuck using something I don't really like for months.

Seeing your pile at the end is interesting because things don't often come in in a big heap. My family's house is minimal and I declutter a shopping of things every other week or so so that items are also leaving at a similar pace as they come in.

I love how brutal you are with the decluttering specifically that bin in the spare room 😬! I would have been so tempted to go through it one by one but I can sense the exhaustion it would bring on and that dump in the black bag was so real and the best way to simplify. I also see how as a mom who has to be the one to do it all most of the time having less inventory bring me peace. ❤ love this long video!

Cleaning out my former art studio/office that became the "junk room" so we can turn it into a nursery. This is the room that I've put off the longest and the time has come. The need is GREAT 😅 so I've got this video going in the background, I've got my handy dandy trash bag, donation box and even a Time Will Tell box ready just in case, and I'm gonna body double with Dawn while I listen to her good Ole wisdom and phrases that I've adopted, chanting like a mantra. This room will not defeat me! I've been training for this for years. I can do it! All thanks to you Dawn ❤

One thing I've done, when I've had lots of bottles of the same item, I've poured them all together into one bottle. Consolidated it all and saves space, gets rid of extra bottles and helps me use it up 👍 great for shampoos, soap, etc!

That is a really good way to look at it. I recently sold shoes that not only had been expensive but so so pretty, but I almost never wore them because they are really narrow in the toes and become uncomfortable when wearing for a bit. So I sent them out and was still feeling regret and thinking about what if I had just given them another chance? (Which is so incredibly silly, I knew I never wore them and they were already in the mail!). But then the buyer sent me a message about how much she loves them and is greatful to have found them and at a good price. And now I know they're in good hands and will be worn and appreciated. Of course you don't get that experience every time; but just from the once, I can remember that in the future, even if I don't get that feedback, I'll now someone will be happy.

Thank you for posting this video & sharing your journey with us for all these years!! This really encourages me that even in a minimal home, you still get so much build up of inventory and have to declutter & donate a car load of stuff every 6 months or so. I often feel so defeated by the amount of stuff that accumulates in our home, but this helps me to see how normal it is, and that I'm not a bad homemaker just because I'm constantly having to declutter more. So thank you for your very real, very relatable content!!! - Lindsay Robertson

I’m not the best at meal planning, but on Sunday night it’s left overs night - I pull everything out of the fridge and ring our dinner bell - a real bell so I don’t have to yell - and everyone gets to chose in the order in which they arrived in the kitchen! It makes it fun lol and I get a night off and a clean fridge

Thank you so much for this video. I always have your videos playing to calm me down when I get overwhelmed and it motivates me to get my home in order. When my significant other knows I'm watching a video of yours that I am going to start decluttering and cleaning. He has been a bit of a wall in getting rid of things that I KNOW THAT WE DON'T NEED OR USE... But I am trying to be patient with him. I got him to agree to use the time will tell bin. We got a plastic tote with a lid to put extra bed linens in that he can't let go for sentimental reasons. And put the bin outside on the back patio where it is out of sight and we can have the space in our closet. It is a struggle being a minimalist in a partnership with someone who is not. I am being patient and understanding in his wishes and he is being understanding about my stress with the clutter in our tiny apartment. Don't stop putting out these videos, Dawn! Thank you thank you thank you. Positive thoughts for you and your family!

About 4 years ago I started using the Branch Basics cleaning system. You get a concentrate and bottles that have water levels and concentrate levels marked. Man, this has simplified my cleaning so much! I decided to try it when a reviewer stated she didn’t think a really small lid of soap could clean a large load of laundry, but it took stains out of her children’s clothes that had been there for a year. Game changer!

Hey Dawn You are really getting me to mass purge on all my stuff…I’am so grateful for this as I’ve been a master procrastinator for decades. I did want to mention as I see all the wasted food going in the garbage(which I too have done a million times), that millions of people are taking on and experiencing massive health benefits of all kinds. It’s called the carnivore diet, basically fatty meats, eggs, and dairy. It’s ahhhmazing how little prepping or even time spent figuring what’s for breakfast lunch and dinner these days reduces. It’s a highly nutritious way to eat these days with so many toxic ingredients in our foods and how satiating this way of eating is PLUS it’s very Minimalistic when it comes to food shopping, preparing, and wasting. It sounds very boring at first but as you plug into the carnivore doctors and influencers and testimonies it’s actually very attainable way to eat. Just thought I’d mention this too you since you are great at being a minimalist. Cheers and Happy New Year and again thank you for all the great and common sense idea’s….Iam finally on a roll🥳
